This makes me think about all the fans that don't like Eleven. For a lot of the vocal ones, Rory was the only redeeming character on the show. If Clara falls flat, they're basically screwed out of Who.

That's a good point. I've always been in the "the Doctor is basically the same man with a different face, mannerisms, and some slight personality changes" camp, and I've loved all three New Who Doctors equally. But yes, if you don't like Eleven, that must be hard. But then again, I can't imagine watching Who and not liking the particular Doctor anyway. He basically is the show.

I absolutely LOATHED Ten at the beginning, and came around to kind of tolerating him sometimes by the time he left. I still watched the show (for Donna, mostly), but it was definitely an interesting experience.

[personal profile] philstar22 2012-11-28 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I can get that. I love Ten, but there are things that bug me about him that didn't with Nine or Eleven. I do think he worked better with someone who could tell him off when he needed it like Donna.

lol. I h8 Eleven.

I am just enjoying complaining about him until Moffat leaves the show and we get Tweleve and I can hopefully go back to liking the Doctor.

But idk.

In my opinion the show is more about the companions anyway which is why it was rough for me not really liking Amy and why I'm hoping to like Clara.
philstar22: (Doctor 10 to 11)

[personal profile] philstar22 2012-11-28 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
That makes sense, then. For me the show is always about the Doctor first and then the companions second. It needs both in order to work, but I could handle disliking a companion (though I haven't yet) in a way I couldn't handle disliking the Doctor. But if the show is more about the companions for you, I can understand being more frustrated.

I guess I just have things I've both disliked and liked about both eras. There are things I love to rant about and things I love watching over and over again.

I am interested to see who plays the Doctor next, even if I do like Eleven. Twelve will be just as awesome as Nine or Ten or Eleven, hopefully.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-28 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I can't stand Eleven either and so I tend to miss episodes and then take forever to catch up. I usually have to force myself to watch them and I only do it because he isn't the end all, be all of the Whoniverse and I fully expect to love the show again someday. Or at least be interested in it again. I want to know the complete on-screen canon when that happens.

To me the show has always been just as much about the companions as it is the Doctor (this might be because I came in during RTD's era, where I felt one of his greatest strengths was the companion focus).

But yes I could probably handle disliking a companion more. I like Amy, but I can't stand Eleven and I dislike Rory, so... lol two out of three kind of screws me over.

errr.... speak for yourself, anon. I'm not friends with [personal profile] fauxkaren or know them at all, but I've enjoyed most of their Who meta in comms & on other people's pages.

Unless you were using the royal we.

I hope Moffat does leave before we get a new Doctor... ~_~

I really don't want him to ruin another incarnation of the Doctor for me. So yeah, I am banking on the fact that he will leave when Eleven regenerates.

Same. But I'm not even sure that a new writer could redeem Eleven for me. I assume they'd stick to Moffat's established characterization of him (loose as it is), after all.

I hope he leaves ala RTD, when Eleven regenerates into Twelve, and I hope it's soon.

Not being aggressive, but why are you watching it if you don't like Eleven or Moffat?

All the hate reminds me of the JNT era.

[personal profile] fauxkaren 2012-11-28 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Because in spite of my general disdain for the characters and my dislike for Moffat as a writer, there is still the occasional episode that I really enjoy?

And this is Doctor Who. Soon enough there will be a new Doctor and a new showrunner and hopefully I'll like that era better.

Okay, I've heard several different versions of this, so -- is the Doctor about to run out regenerations? I've heard 12 is the maximum number of regenerations, so I guess that would give 13 Doctors total, but... that's getting a bit close. Am I completely off base? Have they addressed this?
fauxkaren: (Default)

[personal profile] fauxkaren 2012-11-28 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Eh sort of. It's mentioned in one serial or tie-in novel or something that the Doctor has 13 regenerations. But then there was a line in a recent SArah Jane Adventures episode that implied that there wasn't really a limit.

And it's not like the BBC is going to be like "OH NOES! I guess we're going to have to end this franchise that brings in a lot of money because the Doctor is out of regenerations!"

They'll write around it.

It won't be that hard.

You can just say that it was the Time Lords that has imposed that regeneration limit and since they are gone now, there is no limit on regenerations.

Personally, the idea of hating one of the Doctors makes absolutely no frickin' sense to me because I don't view them as separate characters at all (yes, I like every single Doctor, really, can't even pick a favorite incarnation -- if I had to pick, my favorite is always "the one I saw most recently"). So I see every incarnation in the context of the entire history of the character, and my brain processes it as "different stage of his character arc" rather than "different person".

I suppose it's technically possible for them to cast an actor I can't stand or write him in a way that does nothing for me....but it hasn't happened yet and even if it did, it would be "I don't enjoy watching him" rather than "I don't like him". Is that a weird approach to the character?
fauxkaren: (Default)

[personal profile] fauxkaren 2012-11-28 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a weird approach to the character. There are plenty of people who look at the Doctor like that, but I'm not one of them.

[personal profile] iggy 2012-11-28 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
This is how I used to feel.

Until Eleven. I seriously can't even connect him to the Doctor. It does not work in my mind.
