She's definitely closer to my mental image of Katniss than Jennifer Lawrence.

Closer. My anger would probably not be as strong if she had been Katniss.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. Hadn't heard of her before, I think, but I see how this could have worked.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
tbh she still looks too white to be katniss. I am white and I always pictured Katniss as a POC, an obvious one at that (and Kaya is not obviously half Brazilian, she looks whiter than I do ffs). I wanted her to have the olive skin she was described having. But regardless of her looks, JLaw is an awful actress (I was embarrassed for her through the whole movie) and it makes me laugh how everyone jizzes their pants every time she says ANYTHING because OMG SHE'S SO QUIRKY AND 'REAL', NOT LIKE ALL THOSE OTHER TOTES FAKE CELEBS.

Seriously...I will admit that part of my irrational dislike is because she got the part while looking the TOTAL opposite of Katniss, but people falling over her for that is annoying.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Obligatory to this conversation: olive skin =/= dark skin. It describes the undertones of your skin color, not the overall shade. There ARE fair olive-skinned people. Just saying.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Regardless, JLaw doesn't have olive skin.

to be fair, if 'olive skin' (haven't read the series btw) is the only descriptor given to katniss' skin, the fact that white is still the default assumption is still not that great.

it's similar to the notion that hermione granger could just as easily be read as black, she only got 'big front teeth' and 'bushy brown hair' as a description. though whether or not JK meant it that way is another issue, but i hope you get my point...?

yeah, this; i'm fair-skinned and olive. i thought jennifer lawrence was fine anyway, and she looked a little olive to me? i could see that she has bronzer or something on.

How is JLaw an awful actress? From what I understand, she got a lot of praise for her acting in THG, reviews were extremely positive about her. I thought she was fabulous.

I seriously just cringed with embarrassment and my boyfriend, who is also in the room, busted up laughing. This is one of those situations where the anticipation and hype for the movie were so high (because the book was so popular, understandably as I am a huge fan of it) that no matter how bad it was people would still shit their pants over it. And I'm not even one of those hard-to-please fans who expect perfection -- I just really didn't like the movie and especially not her in it. But maybe since Catching Fire has a new director it'll be better. I hope so!

I don't think you know what a Brazilian is. It's a nationality, not an ethnicity. It's like saying "not obviously American" or "not obviously Canadian". There's a lot of different looks that make up Brazilian.

I was going to say this.

Her nose is... odd. Like it's too high up on her face or something.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
kaya's just not a very good actress, though. i mean, i loved effy, but i can realize that she's not all that. as katniss? a wispy, emo katniss? just no. but, i understand having a fancast in your head and having dissonance when you see the movie and your fancast isn't there. if mark strong isn't childermas in the jonathan strange bbc adaptation, i may have a conniption.

I have no problem with Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss. However, i would have liked to see the auditions expanded to include non-white actresses. Katniss's race isn't clear in the book, so limiting the auditions to just white girls bugged me. But I don't have a problem with them actually casting someone white. Jennifer Lawrence did an excellent job. I don't know enough about this actress to know if she can act, but I could see her as Katniss just as easily.

This. The implication that ~only a white actress will do~ is so skeevy.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
At the same time, when Katniss' skin or possible ethnicity is referenced, it more clearly indicates white than anything else.

While there's an open possibility and casting directors could/should have taken it, I also can't fault them for assuming she was white at all.

I actually think Jennifer Lawrence just KILLED IT as Katniss. I thought she was perfect and I loved her acting. Don't get why people say she's a bad actress, I thought the way she delivered was mature, spot on, and moving. I don't know who this girl is, though, but I guess a lot of people could play Katniss - but I will never imagine Katniss as anything other than Lawrence now.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, too pretty and happy.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
She probably could have pulled it off. Effy in the first few seasons, where she barely spoke but you could SEE the hatred of most other people in her eyes? Yeah, very Katniss. I do think Jennifer Lawrence is a better actor, though.

That chick looks a little too old, to me. Or maybe it's just a harsh angle on that photo.

no.
