How to seek help for ADHD/BPD?
(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)Yesterday, I forgot how I got to it, but I was reading up on ADHD and BPD and I began wondering if perhaps I have BPD as well. It's kind of freaking me out, but I don't know how to seek professional help, because I know I shouldn't be self diagnosing. I'm just wondering if anyone here can help me find the right places and people to help me out and do legit diagnosis on me.
And before anyone can ask about my parents...my parents grew up in small farms and then refuge camps before coming to America as teens. They don't speak English well and aren't highly educated so even if they suspected that I or my brother might have been "different" from other kids, they'd want to keep it "in the family" rather than have everyone find out that their kids aren't normal. They didn't know that they should talk to the school administrators to find out how to help us out.
As for my brother, he's doing relatively well in school and will graduate this year. If I am able to get myself diagnosed, I might talk to my parents about having my brother diagnosed.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)If you don't have insurance, you can try going to the local People's Clinic - and even they can't help you, they might be able to point you to someone who can.
Also, *which* BPD are you talking about? There are 2-3 different mental illnesses that have that acronym.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-24 06:20 am (UTC)(link)Okay, because most people - at least that I've run across offline - automatically assume BPD = Bipolar Disorder.
Speaking as someone who actually *has* Borderline, if you have it you know it almost always know it even if it isn't a strong case. It *really* effects your life. how you feel towards others [and your relationships with them], etc. So yeah, if you're worried go get checked out but I wouldn't worry too much.
Re: How to seek help for ADHD/BPD?
(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)firstly i'd like to say, if you aren't experiencing problems/issues/hardship as a result of your behaviour, there is nothing wrong with you and nothing you need to feel anxious about or 'fix'
from what i know of BPD, it's definitely one of those things where if you had it you'd KNOW for sure...it's a pretty debilitating disorder, and though it can be managed and not all cases are 'severe', no one gets diagnosed with BPD simply by 'thinking' they may have it
i don't know how it works in america, but in my country my first step would be a chat with the family doctor who, if deemed necessary, would refer me to the right practitioner for my particular needs
don't fret! it sounds like it's something which seriously concerns you, so stay away from the self-diagnosis and try to get in to see a therapist* (or the equivalent of what a therapist is called in your country)
Re: How to seek help for ADHD/BPD?
(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)I don't have borderline, but my sister does. It's a miserable thing to have. Contrary to what the other anon said, I think it is something that might be undiagnosed -- personality disorders are tricky. It's also very difficult to treat. There are some medications that might help, but the standard therapy is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. I won't pretend to have a thorough understanding of it, but I think the main thing is recognizing distorted thought patterns and trying to correct them.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-24 04:46 am (UTC)(link)If you can, it could be a good idea to go to an audiologist just to make sure. You may have neural hearing issues (that is, difficulty processing sounds), or you may have hearing loss in certain frequencies.
Re: How to seek help for ADHD/BPD?
(Anonymous) 2012-12-24 02:44 am (UTC)(link)It's... doable. Sometimes it makes me wish I COULD take medication and I suffer from depression, but it's doable.
Sorry, wasn't much help, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-24 06:05 am (UTC)(link)If you insurance and access to, I strongly suggest seeing a doctor who can recommend a good therapist who can not only diagnose (or second it, if the doctor does diagnose) but can help you cope and deal.
*I don't mean to be dismissing your ADD, just an idea. I don't mean offense and hope I didn't cause any distress.
