I'm not into incest (at all), but I don't see any point in reaming people out for shipping parent/child when fandom is perfectly willing to accept all sorts of other problematic relationships. If we're going to use the fiction/=reality argument, then it should apply equally to everyone.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's not my thing either, but it's not like people are forcing me to read it, and it's not like fandom isn't full of highly-problematic relationships as a general rule.

[personal profile] rivia 2013-01-05 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah. parent/child incest isn't my thing but i'd be a hypocrite to get all "ewwww nasty!" over it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
This x1000. It's not my cup of tea either, but really now. Some of my 'things' are at least as gross as incest so I'll be the last person to kink-shame.

I'm not judging OP, I'm just expressing my opinion that I think it's gross

I don't even assume OP is into that stuff IRL (though I hope they aren't...)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh please. If this was your kink we were talking about you'd be crying persecution.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, that made me go "wait, what"
ext_81845: the character ray person from generation kill, squinting and smiling/smirking (yeah... no.)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2013-01-05 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
NO. Not at all, only if you assumed negative things ABOUT ME. There is a difference and I made that quite fucking clear, fuck off anon

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't.

People have their opinions and it's not going to change. I don't lose sleep over it. If someone thinks something I like is gross, I don't take it personally as long as they don't harass me about it, or they are not problematic, hurtful or hateful.

[personal profile] wauwy 2013-01-06 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
People hate on my kinks on a daily basis and even claim that having them is societally harmful, and I'm just like, so no, your argument is invalid.

There are plenty of kinks, including incest, that I find unappealing or even squicky. I feel no need to go on about how "gross" they are when someone talks about wanting to see more of them.

I'm not sure it's possible to publicly denounce something as 'gross' without being judgemental.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Better worded than what I tried to say below you.
wauwy: (:|)

[personal profile] wauwy 2013-01-06 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
lol, saying "gross" is ~public denouncing~ now?

And of course it's judgmental. It's judging the kink as gross for the person who doesn't like it. When they start going into how MESSED UP YOU HAVE TO BE TO LIKE THIS, etc etc, THEN you can start complaining.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
All opinions are judgmental to a certain degree.

Simple judgment is not wrong. Problems arise when the person making a judgment fails to recognize that not everyone will view things in the same light.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a little confused about the balance between thinking something is gross and not judging someone for liking it. Is it possible to think something is gross and honestly not think someone enjoying it is also gross?

I find all kinds of shit gross without judging people for liking it, WTF. Food, for example. I'm not going to go around smacking tapioca pudding out of people's hands or glazed donuts because and saying HOW DARE YOU because I think that stuff is gross.

Logic fail, people

Yeah, no, saying that you think it's gross is judgmental. Especially when you're specifically replying to a secret about wanting to see more of it with how you think it's gross.

It's not though? It's my own personal opinion, there's no judgment there and I never even said OP was a bad person for liking incest fic, now if they stated going on about how incest is not that bad IRL or something it would be different, but they never did

You're being judgemental of someone's opinion because you're reading wayyy to much into it.

Someone says the subject of parent/child is gross. That's their opinion of the subject. Now, did it say anything about the people who want this, want to write it, or read it, no.

I have a dear friend who enjoys some parent/child. Do I think she's gross for liking it? No. Do I think maybe a fic she loves is showing is gross? Well, yes, and we end up having a laugh over it.

This subject of peoples's opinons is taken way too seriously.

*shrug* It's the internets. There's always some whiny bastard out there who's completely forgotten about all that's decent and the very concept of social mores, who just has to scream "But I like it! You can't say it's bad or gross without implying that I'm gross, and you shouldn't say that!" Waah, wah, wah. Tell 'em to fuck themselves.
wauwy: (ew)

[personal profile] wauwy 2013-01-06 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
We can still say the concept grosses us out. Being squicked by something is equally as valid as being turned on by it.

[personal profile] femme_androgyne 2013-01-06 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say you couldn't. Hell, I said just in another comment above that *I* find incest squicky. But there's a difference between "x squicks me, and I want to avoid it" and "x is gross (which implies universality), and people shouldn't write it". The one places the onus on the person with the opinion to avoid the thing they don't like. The other implies that those who disagree are in the wrong in some way.
