I REALLY wish that RTD had still been writing Doctor Who by the time this year came around because (despite having complains about some of RTD's writing in the past) I think he would have done it well, and paid fan service to as many previous characters as possible. I've been looking forward to the 50th special for so long, but I have completely lost faith with Moffatt and am very worried with how he's going to do it. I just hope he's not going to make it all about his characters only, which is my main concern right now. This should be a celebration of all past characters, and include as many (living and/or willing) past actors as possible, IMO.

+1 I'm sure Moffat will have some sort of throw back but it's just going to be background for all his dumb Moffat-isms.

I had issues with RTD too but I think he'd have more respect for the past characters which is a 50th I'd rather see.

So much this.

I actually think Moffat is quite excellent at most standalone things (it's his attempts at ongoing story arcs that are complete shit), so if he approaches it from that angle, I think there's a good chance we'll get something good.

Davidson, sure, but I'd much rather see older companions in any special thing they're gonna do rather than ones we saw only five years ago.

This. While so many early companions are gone forever now, there are still some awesome ones still around that could take part! Ace, Romana, Leela for example.

Only one d in Davison. Big Finish is doing a thing with all eleven Doctors, so you can hear, if not see?

I'm sad about the crop of Old Who actors we've lost recently. Not anyone's fault, but we can't have the Brig or Sarah Jane or Liz Shaw in any special. :(

I hadn't heard about Ms John's death. Bummer. (I knew we'd lost Sladen and Courtney, of course.)

At least Sarah Jane and the Brig (and Jo Grant) had some reunions in the Sarah Jane Adventures, not to mention that one episode where Matt Smith guest starred. But I feel you, anon.

I am kinda half certain they may have been told to deny it or say they haven't been approached even if they have, to keep everything as nice a surprise as possible?

I think Tennant said in an interview not long ago that a BBC woman had come to him before the interview to tell him he wasn't allowed to say anything, followed with him saying: how can I say anything when I don't know anything.

Or something like that? I might have dreamt this? Or it might have been some kind of joke/gif. from Tumblr. or something.

But if that is true, they might have just told everyone to say they wont be in it? BBC can be quite good at keeping Doctor Who things secret when they want them to be.

The idea of an amazing fiftieth anniversary special featuring tons of companions and Doctors of old (and new) is just so fantastic. Personally I wouldn't even care if the plot was kind of bad. Just the idea of all of those characters returning and interacting for just a little bit would be so awesome.

But I don't want Moffat coming anywhere near something like that. I actually feel relief when someone says they're not going to be involved.

It worries me a little too. Its not a 50th celebration if there is no one from old school Who involved. We could have Leela, Romana, Ace, Four, Five, Six (if we must), Seven and yeah some newer ones too. Capt Jack for sure! Not many shows (if any others) can celebrate 50 years. It better be damned special!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, Six was great! He gets a bad rap because he was mired down in crappy storylines and didn't get a chance to develop as much as he should have, but he had plenty of good stuff about him.

Listen to the audios and you will see how absolutely brilliant 6 can be. There is a reason he is always voted the best audio Doctor. I personally hope they will do something with the older Doctors but then in voice form because I think they all look too different.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe they won't do a big actor reunion thing like that? Maybe it'll be more idea-driven or something. Like, I dunno, metaphorical stories that mirror some of the Doctor's oldest and most famous stories like the origin and stuff.

I honest-to-god have no idea what to expect from Moffat. This is a man who can write "The Big Bang", which no matter your opinion of the episode's overall quality, is one of the most pitch-perfect, heartwarming, unapologetically sincere and loving celebrations of the power of fiction and memories and childhood and dreams and imagination and stories - and of Doctor Who's meta and mythology in particular - I've ever witnessed in my life, and then proceed to shit all over those themes repeatedly and, worse, obliviously for the entire season following it (at least RTD's constant face-palming tinkerbell jesus-y stuff and ill-conceived mean-spirited character arcs for season 4 and the specials seemed self-aware).

So what he comes out with might somehow be wonderful because I know he's capable of it, but may quite likely be complete pointless nonsense.

Sometimes I half-suspect Moffat's wonderful adoring respectful resonant keen-sighted ideas are stuff that he accidentally scrawls while drunk/high and doesn't actually understand. Or maybe he's been possessed by those Carrionites from The Shakespeare Code. I just can't wrap my mind around it.

I dunno, but it seems a likely bet that everyone's been told to deny it or claim they can neither confirm or deny it.

(in any case, I'm kinda hoping Moffat will do something small and silly in the vein of a Curse of Fatal Death redux, because I don't trust anyone to do a Big Damn Epic All-Encompassing Anniversary Spectacular that wouldn't feel either anticlimactic, incoherent, or leave half the viewership angered and dissatisfied)

Well, look at this way: if they really haven't got the phone call, they'll say they're still waiting for the phone call.

If they are involved in the 50th somehow, then they'll be working under Moffat, who is a trollface lying liar who lies, and the BBC, who are desperate to keep it all under wraps until the official announcement... and thus will probably say they're still waiting for the phone call.

There is no information to be gleaned from these sorts of interviews, except that David Tennant is a terrible liar and we all know he's in up to his arse-cheeks.

(Right now I'd give you ten-to-one odds that Moffat is bringing people back for the 50th. He's a fanboy. It's an ironclad tradition. He'll probably be trying to outdo Zagreus for sheer over-the-top multi-Doctor WTFery. Most of the time he's painfully aware that he's writing for a non-fanboy audience, but this is his big chance to geek out.)

In my imagination, they're all taking part somehow, but are under fifteen thousand layers of NDAs about it.

Lol. Barrowman was still denying being in Stolen Earth/Journey's End after he was papped arriving set with a script in his pocket. We won't know until it airs.

I really hated that mess at the end of RTD's time, the one with Davros, when he got all his characters together and they all pulled the levers on the Tardis at the same time. I just think those reunions can be very cringeworthy and he would make it all overblown and embarrassing.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't bird poop! It was moss. It was supposed to suggest how integrated with nature he was, that he had moss growing on one side of his face.
