What was the last book you read?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-11 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I just finished reading The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon. I liked it for the most part, but I think the author needs to be separated from his thesaurus.

I had the same reaction to Summerland (by the same author). Wow, it's actually been like...seven years since I read that book...

I've been reading The Signal and the Noise by Nate Silver, which is pretty good but I got pretty bogged down by the baseball section because my mind actively rebels when it comes to trying to understand anything about baseball.

The last book I finished was Inside the Beltway, by Ellen Holiday, which is a m/m romance novel set in DC. It was also pretty good, a quick read on my bus ride home for winter break.

I just read that last November. Very fun, although The Yiddish Policemen's Union is still my favorite of his. The last book I finished was Gentlemen of the Road, also Chabon, which is even worse on the vocabulary front.

In between Kavalier & Clay and Gentlemen, I read Captain Vorpatril's Alliance by Lois McMaster Bujold. My sisters really didn't like it, I think it was just ok. The heist plot just got preposterous after a while.

Now I'm reading more Chabon because I just got Wonder Boys for Chanukah last month.

House of Leaves. The Internet told me it was the scariest, most unsettling book ever, but I thought it was overrated and boring.

Last new book was Walking Dead Rise of the Governor.

Who Could That Be At This Hour? by Lemony Snicket. He's still got it!

This question has made me realise that I have started at least 11 novels since te beginning of December and have given up on all of them.

This is not good.

Mercedes Lackey

The Collegium Chronicles.

Which right now consists of four books, and when I started I had no idea the series wasn't finished. Grr. I would have just waited until they were all out, but oh well. Valdemar is a favorite of mine so they were a fun read.

I once walked out of a Michael Chabon lecture because I thought he was unbearably smug and self-congratulatory, and now I can't read his books.

The last book I read was Civilwarland in Bad Decline by George Saunders. I wasn't going to buy kindle copies of books I already own, but having my copy mailed to me would cost more. Anyway, "Civilwarland in Bad Decline" is an amazing story, but the rest of the collection is a little uneven.

Right now, I'm reading The Hobbit, though I'm barely into it (I'm not even at page 100 yet). Before that I read some stories from a Lovecraft compilation (I have a book that has ALL of his stuff, yay!). But if you want the last non-compilation book I read and finished, it was an obscure Sherlock Holmes pastiche called A Taste For Honey, which I was interested in partially because of the Holmes connection, but also because it was the inspiration for a movie that ended up on Mystery Science Theater 3000, The Deadly Bees. It was... okay. Very different from the movie (including a completely different villain), so if you've seen the movie, the book will still surprise you.

I had the same thought when I read it. That, or a meaner editor.

The last book I finished was The Phantom Tollbooth. I'm in the middle of The Lightning Thief and Fahrenheit 451 now. I've been trying to read as many of the World Book Night giveaway books as possible. Application deadline is the 23rd (in the US at least) if anyone wants to be a book giver.

Halfway Human.

I like it, and I think it actually makes a very good point...but I think the author *really* needs to start looking some words up in a dictionary before using them. : /

The last book I finished was Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire. The book I'm reading now is Gone by Mo Hader. The first is an urban fantasy. The second is a mystery. Those are my two preferred genres, generally. (I say that I read "brain candy". :D )

Right now I'm reading Animals in Translation by Temple Grandin, which is about animal behaviour and welfare, and Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erikson, which is the second book in an epic fantasy series.

What? No! Chabon is great SAT prep.

Anyway, I finished reading Moral Disorder by Atwood. She's an A+ writer.

I'm in the process of rereading the Dresden Files after finishing Cold Days. I always enjoy my rereads, but Cold Days in particular ties in well with Proven Guilty and Small Favor, and there's even some interesting resonance back to Grave Peril.

I reread The Hobbit before the movie. Now I'm on one of the Halo novels. (Those probably don't count as 'real books' but IDC, I enjoy them!)

I need to finish The Hunger Games trilogy but I haven't had any motivation lately.

A tacky Regency romance. I've been reading a lot of them lately because they're like brain candy. I believe this particular one was called "The London Belle."

I'm in the middle of A Clash Of Kings by George R. R. Martin and Back Story by David Mitchell and enjoying both. I'm looking forward to finishing them because I just bought Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway on a whim. The blurb makes it sound so good!

Nanny Ogg's Cook Book.

I'm thinking of trying out Rincewind's Potato Cakes. They sound fantastic. Does anyone else have the book, and have you tried out any of the recipes?

I haven't been able to get around finishing a real book and not fanfic very recently but right now I am reading Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt for a class, and when I have the time I've been trying to read Anna Karenina, but that's a joke because I've read about 12%, maybe I should've started on Lolita first.

I recently finished re-reading the Hobbit and am currently also reading A Dance with Dragons, but am really slowing down towards the end because I don't want to finish it and have to wait forever for the next part. :(

Last book I read was The Scold's Bridle by Minette Walters. Reading Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil atm. Enjoyed/enjoying both.
