Me too anon, me too. I tried to watch the show but it was too awful. So I decided to just enjoy the fanfic.

Agreed, the show ranges from somewhat watchable to bloody awful. But some of the fanfic is brilliant, even if and sometimes especially if it's rather loosely based on actual canon.

I got through the show by just skipping the scenes with the characters I disliked. But I admit that it was mostly because I really wanted to read some fanfic and I hate reading fanfic for ships I don't know the canon for, so I had to watch the scenes that seemed interesting.

I'd say it's more like 95 % of all shippers. It's like the majority of the fandom hasn't even watched the show or has decided to ignore just about everything in it.

That's what I was thinking. Canon characterization isn't big in the TW fandom.

If you tried to watch the show and didn't like it, fair enough. If you haven't tried to watch it, I'd say at least give it a shot. You might end up not liking it and just wanting to stick with fandom, but you might be pleasantly surprised.

It still always baffles me a bit as to how someone could write for a fandom in which they aren't familiar with the canon, but I know lots of people who do, and that's a personal thing, since I don't feel like I can get into a character's headspace enough to be able to feel comfortable writing them unless I'm familiar with the canon. Keep writing if you enjoy it. As long as you're not a) trying to get into arguments about what is and isn't canon without knowing the canon or b) telling everyone that the show is shitty without having watched any of it, I've got no beef with you.

I would agree with your paragraph about probably every fandom in existance except Teen Wolf. The fandom and the canon are barely related at this point.

Seconding the first paragraph. I refused to watch this show for a long time because it sounded so stupid, but then a friend who usually likes the same things as me talked me into watching it and I was pleasantly surprised. It's not half as bad as I expected and some parts are really entertaining.

Most fics I've read go more by fanon than by canon anyway, so I'm not surprised that people like your fics if you just go by what you've read in other fics.

Btw, I love this ship, but I've stopped trying to read fanfic because most of it really sucks. If anyone has recs for good fics that are compliant with the canon characterizations and don't include omegaverse, mpreg, knotting and the like, pleaaaaaase help a fellow shipper out.

tw is particularly good at ignoring canon, yea, but you could do this in almost every fandom with similar results.

if you nail the projected archetypes and the fandom's preferred tropes, you're golden.

I like the show & I like reading a bit of Sterek, but it pisses me off how soooo many damn writers make Derek all fluffy & shit. He's not. At all. So stop it.

Not really. The entire cast is incredibly attractive and the male cast members are often shirtless, so there are lots of heartthrobs to go around. Stiles is popular as a character and some people think Dylan is the hottest cast member, but there are a lot of people who find Tyler Posey, Tyler Hoechlin, Colton Haynes, Keahu Kahuanui, Sinqua Walls, or Daniel Sharman more attractive.

OP, if you're turning this ship into the basic big, strong, tragic, brooding Derek and the smart, caring, babbling Stiles, you're going to get readership because people like that kind of ship, even if it's OOC (sometimes especially if it's OOC).

On the other hand, I love whenever there's a Teen Wolf/Sterek secret, people show up to rag on this fandom. Like. Ridiculous OOCness and weird kinks and character hate has never happened in any other fandom ever.

I keep thinking how much fun it would be to have a crackfic challenge comm based around people writing for fandoms they don't actually follow, so that there's an environment where it gets a pass just for the lulz.

Anyway, that is pretty funny. In a lot of fandoms the accepted characterization seems to equal the way one or two BNFs started writing them.

Bugs the shit out of when people think they're somehow special snowflakes, getting away with writing fic without indepth knowledge of the canon.

YOU ARE NOT.

What you are is merely a product of where certain fandoms have sank to (ie a lot of shippers just love any shitty thing you slap their OTP's names on), and the compliments you get on fic are the general rule of fic reviewing "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all". There might be thousands of people clicking away from your shitfic but keeping mum because shit, that's what you do when you see other people in fandom enjoying something crappy.

This isn't special, while it is moderately stupid (since the whole point of fandom is to celebrate the original material) and you're not creating paranoia like "omg is my fave fic written by somebody who doesn't know the canon at all?".

Well that explains the completely ridiculous and OOC crap that populates the AO3 Teen Wolf section. I have been wondering why so much Sterek fic/crappy fic has absolutely nothing to do with the show.
