lol. Tbh, I didn't care for Simon/Kaylee or Mal/Inara either. The only ship I really liked was Zoe/Wash.

I don't really ship them hardcore, but I do enjoy their back-and-forth and banter. Zoe/Wash is still the best romantic relationship on that show, though. Now excuse me while I go cry in the corner over the end of Serenity.

I never liked Mal in the first place (he bores me, and I don't like the same character than Fillion ALWAYS plays)
but all I remember of their relationship is Mal calling her a whore and Inara asking him not to, and he would still call her a whore anyway.
So....gross.

I never could totally figure out what I thought about this pairing. I thought they had a lot of chemistry, but on the other hand, Mal's lack of respect for her bothered me. I don't know.

I agree though with the poster above that Zoe/Wash was the best pairing ever. :)

+1. I liked them together a lot, but at the same time I always wanted to punch Mal in the face for being so rude and disrespectful to her. She might've deserved someone who was kinder, but I still always loved their chemistry.

And the banter was delicious, but...again, IDK, my feelings about them are conflicted.

This is the way I feel about this pairing too.

On the one hand Mal and Inara have great chemistry, on the other hand he is very disrespectful towards her.

I'm kind of conflicted.

Yeah. This is pretty much my feeling toward the pairing.

Loved the chemistry, loved the UST, loved the kinda antagonistic bent to their relationship, but didn't really care for the specific bent that Mal's antagonism took at times. I think there are explanations for his behavior (although not excuses), and fic can do a good job of working through his issues.

Firefly fic, working through Mal's issues for the last decade. LOL

Yeah, they'd always almost get there and then Mal would call her a whore and demean everything about her... it just never really solidified for me, but the actors have great chemistry.

I definitely see where you're coming from, OP.

When I was younger I really shipped Mal/Inara, but I've gotten older and it just bothers me the way he speaks to her. He keeps calling her a "whore" and it just frustrates me.

Releatdly, I'm so glad that Firefly was cancled and we were never subjected to that horrible episode idea involving Inara and the Reavers.

1. I never quite got past seeing him as Caleb from Buffy. (Who was also fond of tossing the w-word around.)
2. Prefer to ship Inara with Kaylee anyhow :p
3. Zoe/Wash is indeed the best.

I actually love this ship, and both characters separately, even if Mal's a total douchebag to her sometimes. They have their good moments where I squee in shipper mode, and then sometimes I just want Inara to kick his ass.

But really I just love them both as characters, with or without each other. I find them both fascinating.

I agree with this. I hate it when fandoms have the whole banter thing make one of the characters miserable. Banter, to me, only works when the characters actually enjoy it (see: Zoe and Wash). And these two both made each other miserable.

I liked all the other canon ships, but this one didn't work for me at all. And I agree that it made Mal look bad. His paternalistic over-protectivness got really old really fast, even if the show did tell him off for it (sort of).

Ever since I watched the Browncoats special, I can't help thinking of the Reaver episode-that-never-was when I see her. That would've been some awesome angst, but at the same time, omg holy shit no. I really enjoyed everyone's reactions to hearing the story, at least. Alan Tudyk's teary O_O face was the best.

Same, I really hated how he treated her all the time. And honestly, I always thought that his attitude towards her profession didn't make much sense in the context of the show. Companions were obviously highly respected, and I can't say I recall anyone else treating her like he did.

Though even if it had made sense, I have zero patience for slut-shaming anyway.

Nathan and Morena had fabulous chemistry and there was a lot about the Mal/Inara relationship that intrigued me but I had a hard time getting past the fact that he constantly disrespected her and then got weirdly defensive when other people did the same. It also didn't help that I don't think they could've worked as an actual couple without making some serious changes to their beliefs and attitudes.

Their relationship made me hate both of them because they misunderstood each other so badly and it was so painful for everyone involved, so I just stopped shipping them and voila! Everything was sunshine and rainbows again.

It is really disgusting, because I got the impression he did it because he thought that she was to good for him, and he was subconsciously putting her in her place. I am thinking of the argument where he says to her that she talked down to him and she is shocked and she said that she never did. And from my memory she didn't. Just...I hate this pairing.
