Pet owners who try to dictate you pet care
(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)They just don't get it. Her current diet is the one suggested by the vet and good for you, your dog is all meat diet and mine can't do that because for health reasons. I'm requesting ways to refine her current diet a bit, not utterly change it because you think it's unhealthy to mix canned and dry!
Re: Pet owners who try to dictate you pet care
There was one time I was walking her on-leash and I met this other dog owner who had his golden lab off leash. He then tried to lecture me about how I shouldn't have to leash my dog if I just started with no leash and proper training from the start, and how his dog had never been on a leash in her life. I just smiled and nodded, but I seriously wanted to lecture him that yeah, that's great for you and your docile lab, but my husky is never going to walk next to me off of a leash downtown. Also, beyond breed there are basic personality differences between dogs and it's awesome that yours is a calm trainable leash free dog, but that is now the way my dog works.
So yeah. Ugh. I don't mind discussing different ways to care for pets, but when it turns to people lecturing you without even taking facts into consideration, it's really frustrating and annoying.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)I'm sorry random person on the internet in a different country and therefore different local dog food but no. I'm not taking your advice over my VETS. And my vet is a really good vet!
They seem to be mostly against canned dog food. Something about rice and flour? My canned is just squashed up animal parts with the odd veggie thrown in. This weeks flavour is kangaroo and lamb no flour or rice so... shut up?
Re: Pet owners who try to dictate you pet care
Long story short -- one of them was having a nasty allergic reaction to everything until the vet and I tried him on the (horribly expensive) soy-based dry food. It was never my intent, but my cats are vegetarians. o_0
The other two could be eating something else, it would certainly be much cheaper -- but they're all thriving on it and it's easier not to segregate them for dinner, so.
Re: Pet owners who try to dictate you pet care
(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 12:10 am (UTC)(link)Someone even tried to pull the "vets can be wrong" trick with a citation of a bad vet they had and...well, yeah. They can be wrong...but he's a dog specialist, pulled my dog through some hard times and has trained for 7 years as a vet with 2 more years on dogs. I think he knows more than I do!
This is so frustrating! I'd abandon the forum but I'm getting good advice on some training in another part of it for the other dog's behavioural problems. >:[
Re: Pet owners who try to dictate you pet care
What are you looking for as far as refinement? If the diet is vet ordered I would assume it's okay as-is.
Re: Pet owners who try to dictate you pet care
(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 01:20 am (UTC)(link)Canned food is 'Chum" which is basically meats-of-your-choice with vitamins and jelling agents thrown in.
Dry food is 'Science Diet' for dogs with skin allergies, which is the main problem right now. But she's had random stomach flareups before so sometimes she gets the sensitive stomach one. As long as we have dry food in the diet, her stomach tends to roll okay and we can avoid deadly farts ;)
Basically I just can't go taking away dry food and throwing foods willy nilly at her. Gotta go carefully with new types/ingredients y'know? i.e. gave her fish as a treat once. She threw up EVERYWHERE. Never again.
The weekly bone is for her teeth and a bit of chewing entertainment, yeah :) I give it to her on the days I can't take her for walks.
Re: Pet owners who try to dictate you pet care
My vet put my dog on a hypoallergenic diet for two weeks and had us reintroduce key ingredients in the dry food she'd been eating, so we could find out what ingredient she was reacting to. Once chicken was singled out I was told to put her on a limited ingredient food (didn't matter if it was canned, dry, or a mix). She's on a dry food diet with lamb as the only source of protein and she's been fine ever since.
Mixing canned and dry food shouldn't be a problem but personally I would check to see if the protein sources match, so that you're not throwing TOO many ingredients into the mix. Also it takes some time for dogs to adjust to new food even if they have super-hardy stomachs. If watery stool is the only issue your dog has with the new diet she's probably still adjusting and it should go away eventually.
This website has a list of good hypoallergenic dog foods (both dry and canned) if you think a change of canned food will make your dog more receptive to it.
I hope your dog feels better soon! Allergies suck.
Re: Pet owners who try to dictate you pet care
(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 01:19 am (UTC)(link)Ohgod, this. Not for any dietary reason, but we're pretty sure our cat has Pica. He chews up paper and clamors for feathers and lint balls (to eat, not play with). He ends up getting his nose in our leftovers, but so far, the only thing that's seemed to upset his stomach is some soy sauce we got with a bag of potstickers. When we first adopted him, he was a sucker for ramen noodles, mandarin oranges, and avocados. His "EAT EVERYTHING" stray mentality has lessened over the years, but he'll still chow down on some really weird shit...
And as another coolstory - I used to have an Akita with an allergy to beef byproducts. There was one - ONE - brand of dog food that didn't use beef at all. Some sort of lamb Science Diet, I think? I don't remember, but it was pricey. But yeah, the other dog ended up on the food, too, because it was easier to feed them both at the same time rather then try to segregate them and deal with their ridiculous separation anxiety.

Re: Pet owners who try to dictate you pet care
I got an indoor cat in a country where it isn't normal to keep your cats inside, so I feel your pain.
The amount of times people imply my cat is somehow abused is seriously getting on my nerve.
Heck I even walk my cat in the summers (she hates snow with a burning passion) and she is healthier than most outdoor cats I've meet. And I would never say that a cat that gets to go outside is abused, so why would anyone imply that about my cat? Who also goes to the vet at least once a year, to get her vaccines and an general health assessment (which she has passed with flying colours, the last time we went the Vet told me my cat had some of the nicest teeth she had seen on a cat in a long time).
And if I thought for one second my cat would be happier going outside I would let her go outside,
Re: Pet owners who try to dictate you pet care
(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 05:14 am (UTC)(link)I'd be ripped to shreds over the first [nevermind it was years before I got him], and have the same treatment you get over the latter.
I don't get why people are so appalled at the idea. It's been proven that indoor cats tend to live longer, so it's not exactly like it's unhealthy, or depriving them of something they desperately need.
Re: Pet owners who try to dictate you pet care
Yeah indoor cats live longer. And also house cats are domesticated, just the same as with dogs. But we can let one of them out on their own and not the other.
And I know I am a good cat owner, because my cat likes me (and only me, she isn't a people person) and she is healthy and the part that shocks most people who are hatin' on indoor cats, doesn't weigh too much. I buy her new toys (or make them myself) at least once a month, she is fed vet approved food and she can sleep on my living room table if she wants to.
