Stupid question about spoilers

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
This will make me sound like complete idiot but how long do you consider something a spoiler? I know it probably varies from fandom to fandom but I am always really unsure about that.

Re: Stupid question about spoilers

It totally depends on who you ask.... and I think some people are ridiculous about it but there's not much you can do either way.

Depends, a weekish I guess? Depends on the medium though.

I usually only tag things in tumblr. as spoilers for like 48ish hours, but I always tag it with the show so? When it comes to my blogging I just mention early on that I am talking about something current. And when it comes to friends/discussion I usually ask them first if the saw the episode with something that can't spoil them for anything major, like a comment or a hint about something.

I am pretty much one of those people who blame themselves if they manage to get spoilers though, because as someone mentioned in an article I read not long ago: You can't hide from sports results, so why should spoilers for tv-shows be treated any different? Just stay away from the internet until you watch the new episode and you avoid getting spoiled.

that didn't clear it up at all did it? Sorry, I tried...

I'm in the same boat with spoilers, if I don't want them I try to avoid the internet but I understand some people don't want to do that. I know some people are the same with sports scores, they get super bummed out if people spoil it for them.

Re: Stupid question about spoilers

[personal profile] making_excuses 2013-02-09 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
True, but then you avoid the news papers to not get to know the sports score? Just like you avoid tumblr. or LJ or any similar fandom site to avoid spoilers.

Not saying I haven't gotten annoyed for getting spoiled for things, Supernatural comes to mind, but that is more because people don't know how to tag stuff with the damn fandom. But for shows I am currently watching I just avoid places like tumblr. before I manage to watch the newest episode.

If I got told something spoilery directly to me without a warning it is a different kind of animal and I find it pretty dickish. I never spoil people in real life (or online) on purpose, it is easy to ask someone if they are caught up before asking about a major plot point, I even ask my friends if they are planning to maybe watch a show in the future before I spoil them.

wow that got long, apparently I got a lot of feelings about this

I agree. The rest of the world is not obligated to put an embargo on their conversations to accommodate my time-shifted media lifestyle.

I am always unsure too. But I would say two weeks for an episode of a tv show, three weeks for a movie, and four to five weeks for a book, depending on the length.

But honestly I'm still very careful and get hung up on spoilers. I still sometimes worry about spoiling things as old as the fifth Harry Potter book which, uh, came out over ten years ago.

Re: Stupid question about spoilers

I would say that, while TV shows and movies do have something of a standard spoiler period, with books the matter becomes more complicated. When a book is very obscure, bits of the plot can be spoilery many years after the actual release. It does not apply to 19th and early 20th century books that much, but I think that it is fair to warn for spoilers when we have obscure works published ten-fifteen years ago.
And I do approve of tvtropes' policy of hiding ALL the spoilery things regardless of their age.

Which is bizarre, considering the fact that I always seek for spoilers on purpose.

I really like the way tvtropes hides spoilers also.

I like little spoilers but not major ones. So, like, I really like seeking out promotional material for Community to see what's going on all up in that but if I had to see the episode the next day instead of on the day it aired and everyone spoiled the whole thing I would be pretty pissed.

I ended up not watching Legend of Korra because people kept not marking their spoilers on here and I didn't feel like finishing it because it sounded like it sucked :P

Re: Stupid question about spoilers

Personally I consider things spoilers until the next episode/comic issue has come out. With movies I'd say three weeks minimum, because they aren't shown at the same time in all countries, and with books about a month.

Re: Stupid question about spoilers

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think sometimes it depends on the popularity of the material. Like, fans of popular, ongoing t.v. shows will probably stop worrying about spoiler notes a week or so after an episode has aired. That is assuming they are in a circle with other fans who watch the show to that point. Some fic or what all will still have warnings, for newbie fans, or people who are catching up.
That being said, take a book that came out in the 80's, that is fairly well-known, doesn't have any 'twists' that are famous, but still has some solid spoilers lurking in it. That may still be warned for, depending on where you go. But, no one's going to warn for, like, Star Wars.

Just to be on the safe side I'd give shit a few months if it was a show, a few more if it's a book or game.

I know that sounds ridiculous but spoiling stuff really does suck.

Example yesterday with that Wheel of Time secret? People have been saying a month for books, but that's not good imo because some people can't read them for a long time. I won't be able to read AMoL until this summer. Books are expensive yo. (And also time-expensive.)

Re: Saddest fandom tumblr posts (inspired by secret #8)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
yeah I'm not sure there is ever a good time with books. I would say at least a few months, but really I think unless your in a designated spoiler zone it should really never be done.

I mean right now with the hobbit people are freaking out about spoilers and it's been around for over 70 years. So yeah I don't think book spoilers should be done unless it's in a very clear spoiler zone.

Really I feel that way about major Movie/TV spoilers too, unless it's a spoiler zone it shouldn't happen.

Time to wait before you can talk about something in public without asking if anyone hasn't seen it OR talking about it on FB without warning for spoilers.

TV Shows: Wait a week after the original airing.
Movies: Wait two weeks after the movie debuts
Books: Wait a month after a book releases.

If someone is talking about a show/movie/book they are about to read/watch, DON'T SPOIL IT FOR THEM [personal experience with this]! Don't even be like, "Oh man there is this one crazy part!" Just nod, say awesome, and wait until they are done to talk about it. I don't care if they are about to see Star Wars for the first time. If they have somehow been magically unspoiled about what happens, LET THEM REMAIN UNSPOILED!

How much you can whine about seeing spoilers on the internet: None. I am sorry, but I have no pity for anyone who doesn't want to be spoiled on a TV Show/Book/Movie but then goes on Tumblr or Reddit or watches talk shows, or whatever and is spoiled. What the fuck did you expect?

Re: Stupid question about spoilers

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Once the show/movie/game/book has been released to the public, I don't personally consider them to be spoiler territory anymore.

I think it also depends on context. I agree with saying a few weeks... for general internet discussion/tumblr/whatever. But OTOH, I was reading a book circa the 1970s and was really into it, and then my mom came over and casually spoiled the ending for me. That was just rude, even if the book has been out for decades. I think it's rude to knowingly spoil something for someone no matter how long it's been.

ETA: And also, I think it somewhat depends on the spoiler. There are some things I wouldn't want a Breaking Bad newbie to know about because the surprise is super worth it. I always tell people to watch The Usual Suspects before they get spoiled for it because the "twist" is so fantastic unspoiled.

Tv shows? Within a week of the airing. Sucks for those of us who don't get it straight away, but demanding to not be spoiled for months is ridiculous

Movies...for as long as it's still airing in the cinema. So a few weeks or so. Gotta make time to go there!

Books? Eh, a day lol.

Re: Stupid question about spoilers

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
What, lol? It takes longer to read a book than to watch a TV show or movie, so why on earth would that medium have the shortest spoiler timeframe? Or are you being silly?

Re: Stupid question about spoilers

[personal profile] fromherbones 2013-02-10 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
It depends. If it's a Big Deal, I'll mark it as a spoiler for months... I think I may have marked something as a spoiler that was close to a year old, though I can't say for certain.

Also, now that Game of Thrones is a thing, I marka tonnnnn of things as spoilers from the books. If there weren't a show, there are still very large events I'd tag as a spoiler, regardless of time passed (e.g. the RW.)

Re: Stupid question about spoilers

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, looks like I'd warn for spoilers a bit longer than most people in regards to TV shows. Since I have to rely on the Internet and rl often gets in the way of watching show as soon as possible, I tend to assume the same of other people and warn for at least a month for TV shows, maybe 2-3 months for movies.

In conversations, I of course base it on wheather the other person has seen it already and hate spoiling people even if they don't care about being spoiled (occasionally a problem in reverse...)

I occasionally mess up if something is based on a book that's been published since forever though, and just assume that if people haven't read it by then, they probably don't care that much about it anyway...

It's got nothing to do with time for me. It's about how much of a shocking twist it is. I will probably forever refuse to tell people what happens in Madoka Magica because man, that is not something you want spoiled, you've got to experience that. Ditto for any Fire Emblem, Harry Potter, Red vs Blue, Dangan Ronpa, etc.

On the other hand, Pokemon plots are usually eh, so I don't ever feel bad about spoiling those unless there's a big unforeseen twist.

For a movie, I give it 6 months, though if I'm constantly following people who get the movie early, that tends to die quickly. Gives it time to be seen across the world. After that? You haven't seen it? Tough cookies.

Books? A few months, same reason. TV shows? Especially western shows? A week, if that. Besides, with places like Tumblr, Twitter, and even LJ/DW, there will be spoilers everywhere. If you don't want to be spoiled, either avoid them or tag shit so things like Tumblr Savior can block it.

Otherwise, don't get butt hurt for being spoiled after a certain amount of time. That's your fault.

6 months, maybe more for books or theatre. Really wish people could keep spoilers away on shows that haven't aired overseas yet.
