OP why are you listing Kuroshitsuji?

The dub was horrible because the VA who did was absolutely the worst I've ever heard.

Personally? I think the English dub for Kuro is incredible. There are a couple of characters I wasn't amazingly happy with (Mey-rin, for example. Finny, Druitt...) but Sebastian's English voice makes me melt. I adore it. Claude was also very well done, in my opinion. And Ciel.

The dub is really different than the sub, but it's not technically bad. It's only bad if "closeness to the sub" is part of the criteria. (Totally valid criteria btw, just not one everyone cares about.)

As a native-born English person I found some of the accents to be passable. Others we were very well done.

I have to wonder if a lot of the people who say the dub is shit are Americans used to bad Jane Austen films.

No, the issue isn't the accents. Most of we Americans wouldn't know the difference anyway. As the people upthread said, the reason people hate the dub, for those of us who do, is that it completely changed the characterization and the overall tone of the thing, so much so that I've seen people wonder whether it was done deliberately.

And the thing's about Sebastian and Ciel. If they're different people with a different relationship, people who loved the original aren't necessarily going to be at all happy with the rewrite.

Exactly. The accents aren't the issue here, it's the bad characterizations and all the rewrites.

I don't understand why people who watch Japanese because it's more "natural" still prefer Japanese in non-Japan setting shows such as Kuroshitsuji. The dub really isn't bad at all, Sebastian is great. And it's set in England, doesn't it make more sense to watch it in English?

The dub might be passable, but it's really a completely different mood when you compare the sub and dub version of Kuroshitsuji. I've watched them both, and while the English dub captures the Victorian era atmosphere better, the original Japanese captures the demonic aspect better. The guy who dubbed Sebastian wasn't very demonic at all, just a prim and proper butler. Daisuke Ono, on the other hand, just had this deep/charming voice that sounded more what you'd expect from a demon.

As for Ciel, they were both voiced by females but Ciel is supposed to be a boy. The dub definitely sounded like a girl. Whereas Maaya Sakamoto has a talent for playing androgynous-type characters, which worked better for Ciel.

Michael Tatum, who voiced Sebastian in English, had a solid in-character reason for his interpretation of the character. There's an interview where he explained that "Sebastian" is so inhuman that he really has no personality of his own that we would recognize as such, and that the "Sebastian" we and Ciel know is nothing more than a sort of projection of Ciel's own mind and needs. It's like, demons as a kind of supernatural chameleon, taking on the shape and personality that their contractors need almost without thinking about it.

That makes sense and I respect it, but to me it makes for a much less interesting story than the one where we're seeing a real personality in Sebastian, one who's intellectually and emotionally engaged with the game he and Ciel are playing. I love original Sebastian, and the way original Ciel can keep up with him. American Sebastian isn't real enough to love or hate, he's just sort of there; by definition he has no true relationship with American Ciel; and that makes American Ciel just a sort of sad kid talking to a mirror. It's a completely different kind of story, not just a different set of voices or a different language.

I haven't watched any version of Black Butler, so it's hard to say for sure, but ... First of all, is the dub in British English? Because if it isn't, the argument of "it makes more sense to watch a show in English when it's set in England" kind of falls.

Then there's the fact that ... well ... Let's just say that from what I recall of the manga, the British characters of Black Butler are about as British as the characters in Hellsing, or about as British as the American characters in FAKE are American. There are shinigami and a Bureaucracy of the Afterlife, IIRC. The plot may take place in Britain, but everything else is so Japanese there might as well be a watermark saying MADE IN JAPAN in the corner of the screen. ;) So at least for me, the language wouldn't make much of a difference there.

(Although with the Hellsing anime, an actual British English dub might be an improvement even for a sub-fan like me, considering how much gratuitous English there was in the original Japanese version.)

I haven't seen the dub for Kuroshitsuji (mostly because I saw parts of the original version when it wasn't dubbed yet and wasn't very interested in it, so I wouldn't watch any more of it, sub or sub). But there are series where I thought they might be interesting in a fitting dub, like an American dub for Baccano. And that one worked quite well, but unfortunately, I hated the voice actor (both his voice and his performance) for my favourite character, so it really killed a big part of the enjoyment.

Something I would love to see would be a Hetalia version with every character dubbed in their country's language (done by native speakers) - I don't like the anime, but it would be very interesting to see.
