maybe it's because ariel comes off as less of a bitch.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
HOW DARE YOU. JASMINE IS AWESOME.

Ariel is pretty cool too, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
...yeah, I gotta agree. I really didn't like Jasmine (or Belle, for that matter, but I can't even say that in my house, let alone the internet).

Honest question...why do you say that about Belle?

(I don't really remember enough about Jasmine either way. I re-watched BatB way more recently.)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's hard to put my finger on it...I think it's that she acts arrogant. I mean, the first thing she talks about is living in a "poor provincial town" where no one *understands* her. It reminds very strongly now of Bella Swan's attitude towards Forks.

To be fair, everyone in that town was singing about how she was beautiful but a freak, so she was actually right.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Neither Belle nor the villagers were being perfect people to each other. Remember in the original story Beauty's father loses all his money and the family has to make a sudden move to the country. They didn't dwell on that part in the Disney version but it was in one of the storyboarding ventures early on. Belle's accustomed to better, clearly has more education and a different outlook. She's a freak to the village and they're rather tiresome to her. Everyone was at least passing polite all the same and she did have a few growing friendly connections, such as bookshop guy. It's just a little culture shock on both sides that might have eventually smoothed over as such things do if she hadn't run off to her adventure in the great wide somewhere.

Really? It's been quite a while since I saw either movie, but I don't recall any particular bitchiness from either of them.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
mostly it's just a kind of bitter attitude, i don't really think jasmine was a bitch, just bitchy at times. especially as compared to ariel.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I always read the difference more as Ariel being too unbelievably naive to understand her situation and react to it like a rational, informed person.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
well, she is very naive. although i don't know what that has to do with being bitchy or not. you can be rational, informed, and bitchy. you can also be naive and bitchy.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
compared to ariel anyone who isn't smiling or sulking comes off as 'bitchy'.

Jasmine is just way more likely to take charge regarding her boyfriend. she speaks up to him, whereas we're never shown Ariel doing that to Eric. I guess dudes like that?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
compared to ariel anyone who isn't smiling or sulking comes off as 'bitchy'.

maybe? i wouldn't call most of the disney princesses bitchy.

and careful, you might be projecting there.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't call any of the Disney princesses bitchy, including Jasmine.

Same. And to be honest, Ariel really annoys me.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't call her 'bitchy', but I recently wound up rewatching Snow White at the childcare center where I work and was surprised at how much she ticked me off.

Oh, I'm not the original comenter. I was just using their term, though I don't agree any princess is actually bitchy.

Ariel doesn't oppose her love interest, though, and only shows anger/fear when a terrible thing has been done to her. Jasmine just seems more aware of what she is and isn't willing to put up with regarding herself. there IS a culture of expecting women to be more passive regarding that.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Jasmine had reason. Calling her bitchy or even just bitter when she was being forced to take a husband from a pool of pompous windbags is pretty unfortunate. I don't want my little girl absorbing some cornball old idea that a girl has to be all sugar and light even when she's facing a genuine problem.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
why is it unfortunate? most people, if not all, face unfair circumstances, rules, or attitudes in their lives. but you can choose to handle it gracefully and not take it out on people around you. and while i don't really blame jasmine for being the way she was, she definitely had some bad attitude at times.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Who did she 'take it out' on? I saw her standing up to the princes who were treating her as an object in the first place, and she did it with firm, clear words and dignity, same as when she was trying to get her father to listen to her side of the issue. She didn't fly into a violent rage. She didn't destroy anyone's property. She didn't direct anything painfully inwards or turn into stalkery backstabbing stereotype. It's okay to not be sweetness and light all the time. It's okay for a girl to directly express anger. That's not automatically 'taking it out' on anybody. More little girls could stand to learn to handle themselves like Jasmine did.

It's unfortunate because you're perpetuating the idea that women are never supposed to act angry even if they've got the best reasons in the world.
