It's okay to be a feminist and like Pyramid Head. He's a problematic character, yes, but it's okay to say, have rape fantasies, and still be a feminist. Feminism is all about equality, and freedom to make choices.

Pyramid Head is a problematic character? Or do you mean that he represents something problematic?

Is Pyramid Head really a problematic character though? Nobody in the game (as far as I know) approves of what he does or tries to give excuses or anything. And the writers of the game don't think he is in the right either (again as far as I know)

A character that does shitty stuff =/= a problematic character.

A problematic character to me would be a character that does shitty stuff but the narrative/author/whichever does not actually portray any of these things as bad or is even seen to agree with them. That is problematic. Not just a character being crazy and creepy.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
How is Pyramid Head a problematic character? For one, he's barely even a character, he's just a physical manifestation of part of James' psyche.

Also, problematic why? He's a rapist, ok, but you're not supposed to think that's a good thing. It's portrayed as fucking awful, creepy and terrifying.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
A fantasy is just that; a fantasy. You have the control. I have plenty of 'problematic' fantasies, but they exist in my head and I understand the difference between fantasy and reality. You may think Pyramid Head's hot in fandom, but I doubt if you heard on the news that some masked freak was raping women you'd be like "wow, sexy!". I guess what I'm saying is don't beat yourself up, just enjoy your PH porn.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-02-17 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the important part is that you acknowledge and understand that something is problematic. It's totally possible to remain a commited feminist and still enjoy media/characters with problematic elements. Hell, if it wasn't my entertainment options would be severely limited to nearly non-existent.

I don't say this often, but . . . holy shit, did I make this secret in my sleep?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a gamer, but I think the attraction to Pyramid Head stems from his blatant sexual presence which he carries without apology. His sword and "pyramid" are both strong phallic symbols, he's basically wearing a loincloth, he's muscular and he fucks women from behind. The rape appeal probably stems from the idea that you're able to let go and he will do pleasurable things to you. There's also a mystery to him.
As long as he only represents sex you you then that's fine. I think part of feminism is being comfortable in your sexuality and feeling able to express it.
I'd be worried if you started dreaming about having a long term relationship and bringing him home to meet your parents, or about him raping you in a way that is traumatic and not enjoyable.

(Before anyone jumps on this comment I'm not trying to say rape is enjoyable but that it's a kink for some people).

Agreed so hard. Have some internets, anon, for the well-reasoned comment ^^

This may be the most spot on logic about rape fantasies I've ever read. Thanks XD

(Anonymous) 2013-02-18 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
Same Anon from before, some more thoughts.

I guess you could draw parallels between men enjoying a dominatrix fantasy (e.g. tied up, sexual things done to you) and women enjoying a rape fantasy. They're both about surrendering control to someone else. I'm assuming you're not dreaming about actual rape, no crying, trauma, etc., so it may also be that it isn't the rape per say that is your kink. Of course, rapists and dominatrices aren't gender exclusive but in my experience there tends to be a majority of female dominatrices and male rapists. I'm also just sticking to straight relationships here for simplicity.
Maybe it's just this idea of surrendering but that in our society it would be considered rape due to the mystery surrounding pyramidhead. You don't know him and aren't in any type of relationship (by this I mean both non-romantic and romantic) but he is in control of your sexual pleasure. He is also gaining pleasure from sex act at a priority over your pleasure.

Hey--feminism doesn't obligate you to a certain set of sexual fantasies/practices--that's academic radfems up their own ass telling you that.

There's plenty of misogynists into femdom, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm staring to wonder what actually isn't 'problematic' these days. It seems like almost anything can get tagged with that label.

I'd love to see what isn't considered problematic...that would be interesting.

The true horror of Silent Hill is that it makes you question yourself long after you put the controller down, haha.

(In all seriousness, though, I don't think it's anything to be worried about. This is going to be really incoherent, as I'm not the best at organizing my thoughts in a cohesive manner, but... Silent Hill does a great job of creating a scary, scary atmosphere, and I think the way it blends in sexual imagery is a big part of that. Finding various characters scary characters attractive is a pretty natural reaction to the way the game presents its horror, IMO.)

I also haven't played the games (but watched PH scenes on youtube) and are you me? I'm so fucking attracted to Pyramid Head. I don't know why... the tight body? The giant ass butcher knife?

here's the funny thing, though. I'm a lesbian. lol

Or not.

I want "even though I am a feminist" to be a thing you add at the end of every sentence when talking about yourself. Like, god damn this piece of red velvet cake is gonna be so sexy in my mouth even though I like the feminisms.

While I do consider myself a feminist, I will miss the Canadian penny.

I have a framed picture of him on my wall. I'm not ashamed. People are attracted to mystery and our darkest fears and especially something we can't see and since we can't see his face I think that holds a lot of the fandom still in place.

I hate the films tho and what they're doing to the franchise and I feel so ashamed that PH is involved because he's a part of James for crying out loud. No one else. It makes me mad and thus not aroused and thus I can't enjoy him in the films.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-18 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
True story, the first thing that majorly tipped me off that I'm a lesbian was back when I found out that every other girl who has played Silent Hill was wet in the panties for PH

while I was and still am completely apathetic about the character

In addition to his other connotations, PH also represents masculine sexuality. It's not a big deal for a hetero or bisexual woman (or gay or bisexual man) to find that attractive - sure doesn't make you a bad feminist.

That said, I'm straight, and he does nothin' for me. But like I said on the comic book thread, I'm all about the fun, playful side of masculinity. PH is all dark, brooding and aggressive. Nope.

That cartoon with Pyramid Head's version of Lucy's booth is like the best thing I've ever seen.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I've only ever seen the first movie. But there was an amazing defense to him, specifically.

He was a manifestation of Alessa's idealized protector, a punished of those who wronged her. Someone big and strong and, yes, attractive. He's a twisted Knight in Shining Armor, basically.
