Especially on a particularly interesting post.

ITA. I wish people put all their comments in notes, rather than in their tags. Tagging is good for organizing your blog posts and contributing to specific tags, but why would you put comments in there? Putting comments in notes gets them out to a wider audience and is easier to see. Not to mention it makes it easier to facilitate discussion. Especially since many tumblr themes require you to click on individual posts to show notes, which is always a hassle.

I also enjoy clicking on comments left on notes and checking out blogs that way. I knew I wasn't the only one.

*many tumblr themes require you to click on individual posts to show tags

fixed

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to mention tag scrolling is still broken, so you have to click on an individual post to see all the tags even from your dash. =/

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes to all of this. Ironically I wish there was a way to post this to tumblr but not on my own blog because I don't want to deal with the wank that would inevitably ensue.

...though maybe they'd keep it all to the tags and I'd never find out.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
i wish more people did this! i'm an artist and i always get so excited when someone reblogs my art with a nice comment, but more often they reblog it with a nice comment in the tags and i miss it if i don't go look at the post on their blog, which can be easy to miss

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I wish more people would comment in the notes too. If people weren't meant to do that, then Tumblr wouldn't allow for the option. It's not rude, it's not out of line, there's nothing wrong with it, and it irks me when I see people bitch about it.

As a person who doesn't have a Tumblr account and uses the comments to explore the place, I'm way with you with no-comments-in-tags.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
as a tumblr user myself, there has been a post going around that says "please put comments in the tags" or something like that. probably because the comments are always stupid or useless and no one cares? i'm just assuming.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Then ignore them? Nobody's forcing anybody to read them, but some of us DO care and enjoy seeing our stuff commented on.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Sanity on Tumblr?!

Where?

[personal profile] gamma_orionis 2013-02-24 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone know why people are supposed to put comments in the tags on tumblr?

I'm legitimately curious - I never saw the point in it.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
The general sentiment I see is that "putting your comment in the post is like saying something out loud in class, but putting it in the tags is like whispering it to your friends and giggling with them."
The more practical reason is so posts don't get passed around with a gigantic string of comments going "THIS!" and "T for true" and "MY FEELS" and "perfect babies" and "WHY WOULD YOU POST THAT," and to keep the original post from getting too squished to read.

I'm okay with people putting the inane stuff in tags ("this" "my feels" etc), putting giant essay comments in tags is what bugs me. If you have something to say, just say it...

It's been my policy to actually respond, rather than just putting my thoughts in the tags. I like getting a conversation going, and it's often frustrating that people just reblog and only respond in the tags. I can't tell if you have anything to say from just my blog, and many other people have such rapid pace reblogs that I can't locate it on their own.

So I totally agree with you.

[personal profile] maverickz3r0 2013-02-24 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I respond in the post itself and to hell with anyone who would complain.

The things I put in the tags are the stupid rambly things no one actually needs to see, but if I have an actually comment it goes into the notes.

I remember once reading a "Guide to Harmonious Tumblr Living" post (how obnoxious is that, to begin with) and it said to keep personal discussion in tags, presumably because no one wants to read your inane comments or whatever. I find that blood stupid, especially because if someone has something interesting to say but put it all in the tags you don't get the tags under the reblog like you do with added comments. Put comments wherever you'd like!

The "rules" of tumblr etiquette make zero sense and just make the platform more of a nightmare to use. The only time I use tags for a response is if I'm saying something wanky but don't want to engage.

I can see the functional purpose when the comment basically serves as a tag.
Like: #adorable babies #kittens #squeal

But for actual comments, this is entirely stupid, and people need to stop pushing for it.
Don't like my comment? Source is there. Reblog it from whoever you want and #deal with it.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Often the source is just a link to that person's blog rather than the actual post so it can be a pain to try and find the one you want to reblog. I just delete any comments I don't want.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in boats on this issue. Yes, it is nice to see the nice comments to your posts, and see what people have to say about things, have conversations etc. But on the other hand, I find myself deleting people's annoying comments and gifs from posts I reblog because half the time it's just inane crap that I don't care about. One person I follow puts a comment in bold on nearly every single post she reblogs which can get really old, really fast. So, it's a fine line between insightful comments and stupid fangirl vomit.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
This frustrates me - it's as if most people on Tumblr can't comprehend a system wherein they put relevant comments that contribute to discussion in the notes, and keep the pointless "THIS!" and "FEELSSSS" stuff in the tags. It doesn't have to be either/or. And this whole business of writing whole paragraphs' worth of commentary in the tags is bullshit; if you have coherent thoughts about something then just share them - people who reblog it can just delete it if they want.

I like Tumblr but the whole "THESE ARE THE RULES OF TUMBLR" mentality makes me want to pull my hair out.

[personal profile] citrinesunset 2013-02-24 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Completely agree. This is my main frustration with Tumblr, and if I didn't feel like it was taboo to add comments to reblogged posts, I'd participate on there much more than I do.

I think tag comments can work really well when they're just short quips that don't have much substance. And I've seen a few tumblrs that made really fun use of tag meta. But when people try to use the tags to write long, thought-out comments? I'm sorry, but it just doesn't work for me at all.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I hate how people bitch when stuff that they've posted gets posted with a comment. THAT'S KIND OF THE POINT. But instead people complain about the comments and it's just fucking annoying. I mean, I can understand bitching about all the "MY FEELS" and crap like that, but if someone actually has something nice to say or hell, even a neutral comment then just don't worry about it? Fucking Tumblr.

I find the reverse just as frustrating - I'll see a thought-provoking art/meta/etc, click on the 'notes' to see if there's any discussion going on, and it's just upteen pages of 'X reblogged this', 'Y liked this'.
