I hate Gimp with the passion of a thousand suns. It's like the creators are trying their darn hardest NOT to make it user friendly.

Owning a copy of Photoshop doesn't make you a Photoshop wizard. I've seen several shitty graphics done in Photoshop.

Personally, I don't want Photoshop, not if it means getting a keyless copy and going through hell to make the damned thing work.

Besides, how do you know people are submitting their ~horrible secrets in Gimp, anyway? They could be using a web-based program or MS Paint for all you know.

Hey, watch your mouth, I have made some beautiful things with GIMP! Admittedly, it took me a long time to get used to it after using Photoshop for a year, but I never saw it as all that bad. Honestly, you can't always blame the camera, usually it's the person taking the photos who's incompetent.

I went to a photoshop training session and it turns out the problem isn't ms paint, it's me. And that's why I don't make secrets (also, lack of time, nothing to say). Anyway, I don't think better software would help people who think yellow fonts on a white background are a good idea.

Nah mate. The reason there are so many crappy looking secrets is that all the people who made decent secrets jumped ship when they found themselves in the wrong timezone to partake of the wank after the publication vote thing. Then another lot left when we moved from lj. Fix that and they'll all come good again.

I think Gimp's pretty good. There's a learning curve but I found that it had everything I needed in Photoshop when I didn't have it for a while. Plus, it's free so can't complain too much.

Yeah, as a person who has used Photoshop for over 3 years now, I kinda get baffled by any complex program that has a different user interface than the one I usually see. It's just the habit.

i have no idea what gimp is like but i learned that pixlr was a thing last week and it seems like a fairly legit substitute.

for those interested i should probably also mention that it is free, or, in other words, $700 cheaper than photoshop

I hate GIMP so much. SO much. I don't have the words to describe the burning sense of loathing I have for GIMP.

Part of my job for a while was translating a technical manual, including the diagrams. This meant erasing the non-English text and replacing it, usually.

I convinced my boss to let me bring a laptop from home specifically for Photoshop because of the godawful GIMP interface. (No, seriously, how the fuck do you move layers of text around? The text had to be positioned VERY SPECIFICALLY and it was just such a pain in the ass with GIMP that it took eight times as long as it did with Photoshop.)

That was how much I complained about GIMP - I got a copy of a VERY proprietary document on a personal machine that I took home every day.

I feel like a complete oddball in this discussion for having both GIMP and Photoshop and always using GIMP (tried photoshop one or two times and was like "How do I do anything?!")

Anyway yeah... anything you want to do for a basic fandom secret is available in GIMP, and often the crappy secrets are crappy for design choices. This is one secret I just won't get I guess.

I think it can all boil down to how good your composition and design skills are, although I can't really imagine how it must be to use anything other than photoshop to play around digital images with. The range of what it can do is a really fun experience!

I think the issue is less what program the anons are using and more that they don't know the principles of basic design. :P
