tubal ligation/tubes tied?

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2013-02-27 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I went to the ob/gyn on Friday to get a normal cervical exam and we discussed methods of birth control. I mentioned something about wanting to get my tubes tied (since I hate hormonal birth control) and wondering if my health insurance covered it. The doctor told me it did, and I said something about how I was seriously considering it and wanted to talk to my husband about it.

Well, today I got a phone call from her office (this is four days later, mind you) wanting to schedule me for my tubal. I told them I hadn't had a chance to even talk about it with my husband yet and that I would call back and schedule one later, but I'm starting to freak out about it (not really because I haven't decided once and for all that I want to be childless because I have). I haven't had any kind of surgery before and even though I was told by the people at her office that it was a 45 minute procedure and that I would go home the same day (??) I worry about the pain and the recovery and also the price (I have no idea what my co-pay would be)

In any case, anyone with experiences with this kind of thing want to share?

I was under a general anesthesia so I can't say anything about the procedure, but the recovery wasn't all that bad. I was in bed for two days (or so I've been told; it felt like two years). I was sore for a few weeks but after about the first one it wasn't all the time. I have a ton of medical issues and my doctor said they contributed to making my recovery slower and apparently more painful than usual.

Do you know what specific procedure you had? The wikipedia article lists nine different kinds of tubal ligation procedures

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tubal_ligation (WARNING, THERE IS A PHOTO OF THE ACTUAL PROCEDURE if that kind of thing grosses you out)

Pretty sure it was bipolar coagulation but I couldn't say with absolute certainty. It was almost 10 years ago.

I don't know about the price, but I know several nulliparous women who've had the procedure done. I don't remember them saying anything about any serious complications (most people seem to have more problems with the coils). "Tubal ligation," though, can mean a lot of things - cauterizing, clamps, bands... And different procedures will have different results.

Yeah they neglected to say which procedure they were even using now that I think about it... I find it baffling that they would just call me up and say "Dr. [] wants to schedule your tubal ligation" without even consulting with me first, it's a permanent surgery ffs and I only talked about having it to the gyno, I didn't exactly say "yes I definitely want this surgery" and file a follow-up appointment at the front desk. I didn't make ANY follow-up appointment

I had tubal ligation after delivering my fourth child by C-section.

Cut and burned, the doctor told me. My husband had a vasectomy as well, which my doctor wholehearted approved of since she told me that I could still get pregnant but it would most assuredly be ectopic. Since having it done, I regret not having a hysterectomy as my cycles have gotten much worse as I get older and I've read a number of reports of tubals reversing spontaneously. :P

At least as far as what the documentation in my doctor's office says, the older you get the less likely it is that your tubal ligation will undo itself. That's why my doctor will not do the procedure on anyone under 35, because the risk of that happening with dangerous complication is higher.

I know multiple people who have had it done, and the general complaint is mild pain from the gas they have to use for the procedure. Personally, I'm looking into Essure for myself, because I have an autoimmune disorder and am on immune suppressants, and Essure involves no incisions (plus with my family history of scarring, I trust something that creates scar tissue more), but for most people that's not as much a concern.

Nobody I have known has had pain longer than a week, and they also considered it mild and annoying. Some said it was milder than period cramps. The ones that had it "bad" had it about a week but most were 3-4 days. Unless you have pain issues to begin with, I probably would not worry too much about it!

Wow - first lemme say, you're the first person i've *ever* seen whose doctor didn't basically tell them 'you need to be older/have more kids/have some kids/have a horrible physical ailment before we'll even *consider* this....'

I had a partial hysterectomy in 2005. Basically - uterus gone, ovaries still there so no worries about hormones and such.

They did it via three small incisions in the abdomen, and i had almost zero pain, and was feeling fit and ready to go in about three days. Of course, i did *not* give in and lift bags of cat litter and such for the time my doc said to not lift things, but that was a much more um...invasive surgery and it was seriously no big deal.

I've had a few surgeries and have no issues whatsoever with anesthesia, but that's something that varies from person to person. They only kept me overnight after my surgery to be sure all my bodily functions (peeing and bowel movements) came back online on their own.

If you do decide to go through with it, just make sure you can take it easy physically for the prescribed time afterward, and actually *do* take it easy and just rest. But it's really not a physically demanding surgery.

Wow, that's moving fast! I would be sure to talk to your husband about it, first. Just because it's a good idea to let your family know when you're going to have a surgical procedure done, then get in touch with your doctor and be sure you ask him/her every question you can think of beforehand. It's always better to go into these things informed.

I've had a uterine fibroid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uterine_fibroids) removed via laparoscopy.

I was admitted to hospital on Monday, had surgery on Tuesday and went home on Thursday morning. The weekend wasn't that great, there was still some pain (mostly from the gas they use to blow up your belly so that the surgeon can see what he's doing - it took more than a week before my shoulders stopped aching), but I could go for a short walk with a friend who visited on Sunday. I stayed home the following week and returned to work the week after that.

Lifting/carrying heavy things and any exercise more strenuous than a brisk walk were still a no-no for about two months, but all in all I was surprised at how fast I recovered from the surgery and how good the scars healed.

It's not the exact same as having your tubes tied, but as it's in the same "area", I guess your procedure, should you decide to have it done, could be similar to that.

I can't tell you anything about the price, though, since my insurance covered it. And I guess you're American, so prices in Germany wouldn't help you all that much ;)
