Gush about media you like

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I can only tolerate so much hate and whining and negativity in fandom without rolling my eyes and getting shaken out of my enjoyment sphere by people taking fiction so personally that they continue to talk about things they don't like. So how about just use this thread to drop a comment about some random fictional work(s) you love and enjoy, anything from a tl;dr essay about why it is awesome to a "I love X so much you guise", and revel in the "ooh ooh me too!"

The Oz books are the best series of childrens fantasy novels ever written, and Ozma is the best fictional princess ever.

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT COMMUNITY.

Seriously though I love it. And Troy/Abed is my favorite pairing out of anything ever and totally caught me off guard when I started shipping it. I just love them and the rest of the Greendale 7 (plus all the minor characters! Vicki! Annie Kim! Fat Neil! Starburns! The Dean! Chang/Kevin!) with my whole heart.

Monster High is funny and clever and full of positive female role models.

*whispers* And all the ships are wonderful.

Maybe I missed the glory days of it, but I LOVE The Cirque Du Freak books. They're scary and sad more often than not, and violent, and surprisingly endearing

The movie isn't too shabby, but...the books!

I know there's some issues with the series, but I love the abundance of female characters on Once Upon a Time!! The fact that there are so many great female characters, both good and evil is excellent. Plus, so many of the women on the show are badass; Emma wielding a sword last season? Snow pulling a sword in the first moments of the show, as well as a bow and arrow this season? Say what you will about the show, but this alone is part of what makes it one of my favorite things on TV right now, the variety of female characters in positions of power.

Spacetrawler is the best and I love it so much and it's so funny and also every character is the best character and it's so interesting

I love that this is a series where you can have an angry animal-rights activist who's a pacifist, and never treat his beliefs as a joke. And have another character who's extremely violent and a hunter, and have both of them be awesome without diminishing the other's awesomeness in any way. And have them get into a relationship that's not only believable but actually surprisingly heartwarming. You can have a relationship between a giant space monster and a space canary, or between a human and a space slug, and have them be legitimately good, well-written relationships. I love that the author is able to do that. I love that the series doesn't judge anyone for their romantic relationships, whether they're alien or human or whatever. I love that the frame plot has an alien coming up to an old Spanish guy and hanging out with him and taking him into outer space, and the old Spanish guy is just cool with everything. I love that the characters actually care about each other and actually deal with their emotions (mostly) like responsible, reasonable adults, and when they don't or can't, they try to help each other to deal with it better. I love the Yuri storyline for that, especially. It's just a series with so many cool ideas and so many cool characters, but more than that, it handles them all so well.

Aaaaagh seriously Spacetrawler is the best read it you guys

Instead of doing homework earlier this week I finally decided to check out Bravest Warriors on youtube because of the surging popularity of the Catbug character on tumblr.
AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH. IT'S SO QUOTABLE.
Like, I seriously cannot get over episode nine:
"IT'S GOD! REVERE HIM!" "SOMEONE GET GOD A MOJITO"
"IT'S THE DEVIL! KILL HIM!" "AND TAKE AWAY HIS MOJITO"
easily my favorite part in the entire season. On that note, episodes are only 5-7 minutes long, yet there's so much to an entire season that was only little over an hour long.

Lately, MASH and Shameless US, especially Shameless US, that show is awesome and still haven't given me a bad episode and it is just amazing and I love it, I love all of it!

I really need someone to talk about Shameless US with, preferably someone who like me kinda grew up in the same environment and get how it is to actually live the life they portray. Because some of the fans seem to freak out over things I know from experience isn't freak-out-worthy.

Wandering Son/Hourou Musuko is my absolute favorite manga. It chronicles the lives of transgender kids in a sensitive and respectful way, and it's just... really good. Helps that I love slice-of-life series in general, but yeah.

This is turning into "Advertise your unknown stories".

It's not very popular (Hell, the US publisher didn't even want to print the final book and it took me a year to find it), but if you ever see them second hand, The Mistmantle Chronicles are really good. There's a lot of religious parallels, but it's not preachy. It get darker in tone throughout all five books (With the grand finale being a standoff against a cult leader with a big following)

Oh, and unlike Redwall (Which I do love dearly), there are no designated 'good' and 'bad', smart or stupid species, it's a big mix.

Vikings! I'm really looking forward to the next episode. I love Ragnar and Lagertha and their children, and Athelstan is so, so sweet, and even though I don't always agree with their actions I can't help being hopelessly attached to them. Ragnar and Lagertha have one of the most fascinating and positive relationships I've seen in a long while as well, so that helps keep me interested.

And Spartacus is amazing even if it's going to be the death of me. SO SO AMAZING. I don't think any other show fucks with my emotions in the way Spartacus does. Which I guess could be considered a bad thing, but in this case...it's kinda not.

Also, Cole/Baird (from Gears of War) needs to be a thing. Those two have such an wonderful relationship, I kinda wish we could have a game set when they first met. And I need a follow up to Aftermath, gah.

I love even the bad parts of Doctor Who. The bad parts make the good parts better and makes the show as a whole feel more real and alive. All lives have stupid and crappy bits. Plus, they're fun to make fun of. Not all shows have this privilege. Most of them have a ticking clock where every bad episode decreases the number of possible good episodes a show can contain. But not Who. :)

I love, love, love how everyone refers to Jackson as "The American" or in Reid's case, "My American." Like he is this unicorn with a six shooter.

It just tickles me how much of a cowboy/Macguyver/scientist he is. And despite the fact that he is always around flammable liquids, he is never without a lit cigarette.

I recently rewatched some season 2 episodes of the classic Moonlighting.

I personally have accepted the fact they screwed up David and Maddie getting together, and just enjoy the amazing will-they-won't-they screwball-comedy paced dialogues that are delightful and never-ending and Cybil is gorgeous even in 80's fashion.

The first seasons of this show are shining magical TV gems and I'll never stop loving them.

Every time I watch the West Wing, I am surprised all over again at how good it is, how much I love the characters, and how amazing little things are.

I can't explain how much I love the Lord of the Rings. There's nothing to compare it to.

I don't have a favorite character of all time, but if I had to pick, it would be Buffy Summers. Not because she's better than my other top favorites, but because out of my top favorites, she's the one who did my mind and soul the most good IRL.

I will never not think that Peanuts is the most wonderful comic strip of all time or that Charlie Brown is one of the greatest and most unique fictional characters ever created.

Challenged only by Calvin and Hobbes, which concentrates as much awesomeness as Peanuts put into twenty characters over fifty years into two characters over ten years.

I love Doctor Who wholesale. I love every Doctor. I love every companion. I love something about every era. Every single thing about it bursts with potential. Its decades of history is far, far more than the sum of its parts. Its story is an accidental epic, which is my favorite kind. It makes me unafraid and unashamed to feel things sincerely.

Harry Potter IS my childhood. It probably had as big a role in my growth as school did. I treasure every word.

Star Trek makes me want to be a better person and makes me excited about the future. The characters are astounding. The atmosphere has no compare. It is unafraid of class and principle, and I am so grateful for that.

I pat my stack of Bloom County books regularly, just when I'm walking past them. Opus and Milo and Billy and the Boingers and Bill the Cat and my favorite strips can still make me laugh out loud even though I've read them a million times.

And the Second Hand Lions movie has a special place in my heart because Berkeley Breathed did the comics panels for it.

Pandora Hearts is one of the most underrated mangas that I have ever read and it continually boggles my mind how seemingly unknown it is by the vast majority of people.

Seriously it is just fantastic. All of the characters are so well-developed, plot twists are shocking but not asspulls (you go back and read and there's definite, but not obvious, foreshadowing), and the art is beautiful.

I mean, it's not completely unheard of, but I feel like there's no fandom and everyone I've asked hasn't heard of it. :(

I am in the midst of the Malazan Book of the Fallen, and so far...

I love everything and everyone. The world is so vivid, so brilliantly realized. It feels real enough that I could almost step into it. And every character speaks to me, somehow, no matter how insignificant.

I'm sure it'll probably start wearing thin before I reach the most recent books, but for now, I'm loving it.
