Wow, you're right, it totally is. I guess that message fell flat for me (but then it always does)

Still enjoyed it though.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
No. No. And no. This idea we've got in our culture that abuse victims have all these reliable ways to escape abuse and if they don't they're bad people is bullshit. We like to pretend there's soooo many resources and ways to get away but the truth is, there isn't.

There are few crisis centers/Women's shelters in rural areas, where Carl may have lived. Even in more populated areas getting to a crisis center can take resources abused women don't have. Like access to transportation or money to fuel a car/take a bus/take a cab/ect. Police, despite what tv likes to tell us, are no help. Ex. I was beat by my partner in front of two sheriff's deputies. I looked them in the eye and asked for help. They stood there watching, drinking their coffee, and eventually left. Never lifted a finger. Many times, especially in small towns/rural areas, police are reluctant to do anything about abuse as its still stigmatized and thought of as a 'woman's problem'.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have family and friends who are willing to help them. Often abusers separate the victim from their support. Who's to say that Carol had anyone in her life willing to help? Hell, half my family told me to suck it up when I told them about the abuse and asked for support so I could leave. Who's to say the same wasn't happening to Carol?

Further more, what if she had tried and failed? Abuse can get sooo much worse if the abuser finds out you tried to escape or told someone. That fear is a very powerful thing in keeping you from trying every again.

And I want to point out we never saw Ed hurt Sophia on screen or had any mention of canon he ever touched her. In fact, we saw Carol keep her from being alone with her father. This is her way of protecting her child, possibly the only way she had because America just likes preaching about all the resources we have instead of actually providing.

And before I hear something about how people will listen if they think a child is being abused. Nope. I've seen people willingly turn a blind eye to child abuse more times than I can count. Hell, recently I know of a convicted child molester granted custody of three toddlers! And then people acted honestly confused when he hurt those kids. Then they gave him one back! Because that's the shitty world we live in.

Some people get choices and that's great for them. Really it is and I am happy for them from the bottom of my heart. But don't act like everyone has those choices. Just don't.

Graphic designer and video editor here. It's my 9-5 job.

Short answer? All the time.

Long answer? It happens all the fucking time.

I always end up doing "favors" for the boss's kids for free, though. Sigh.

I'm interested to know the various things you have to say to this.

Thanks. I don't really think it was particularly brave, TBH. The fear was high but there was very little threat most of the time. My overactive imagination was what made things scarier than they really were.

San Francisco is really nice and so is all of Northern California but Austin is a lot cheaper (if you don't mind living in Texas, though I forget I'm in Texas living here)

is poly a sexual orientation?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
What do you think? Genuinely curious

"Poly" meaning being in non-monogamous relationships of any kind

True! I'm just pretty much in love with San Francisco and the Bay Area, heh. Seattle would be nice too! Ah well, we'll see how things go in the future.

This - I downloaded all of Nine and Ten's adventures to rewatch, but I still cannot bring myself to watch Ms. Amy "Tee hee aren't I sexy oh look I can slap you and say I'm Scottish so it's okay and snog the Doctor while treating Rory like he's disposable" Pond's episodes. Loving JLC, though - and I think I'm actually finally warming up to 11!

Re: are you afraid of dying?

[personal profile] gobbledigook 2013-04-05 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm scared of dying painfully. If I could just skip the process of dying then the part where you don't exist anymore and don't have to worry about the stuff that plagued your mind when you were alive actually sounds pretty comforting.

Re: Well, yes.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-04-05 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, more or less this.

I don't wake up in the morning thinking oh god I'm gonna die I'm gonna die. It doesn't keep me up at night. But I can't say I don't fear it, because... it's death. I don't have existential crises about it but I also keep away from cliffs, watch for traffic and get worried if I'm followed.

I think the anon who originally responded is reading a bit too much into the concept of fear, here. I'm not talking about endless dread. Nothing a psychologist would diagnose as a problem. Just a natural aversion to the end of me.

Gamers are particularly obnoxious at refusing to acknowledge that there could be anything sexist, racist, or homophobic in games. Or covering their ears to it whilst simultaneously telling you to shut up and stop overreacting. It only gets worse if it's about a popular game.

I find it's best not to talk about this. It makes people pissed off.

Re: is poly a sexual orientation?

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-04-05 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't think so. Polygamous or monogamous doesn't convey whether or not you have restrictions based on someone's individual identity, but your restrictions or lack thereof about relationships as an experience. But I could be wrong.

Re: is poly a sexual orientation?

[personal profile] gobbledigook 2013-04-05 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
No I would think it's like an add on to the sexual orientation you already have
like you're a lesbian who is also polygamous
or a lesbian who is also monogamous

Re: human x non-human ships

[personal profile] badass_tiger 2013-04-05 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Discworld has Carrot/Angua in the Watch series. Carrot was raised by dwarfs and considers himself a dwarf but he's atually human. Angua is a werewoflf. And recently Nobbs and a goblin have taken a fancy to each other.

In Supernatural, there's Dean/Castiel and a variety of other human/angel ships? And Crowley/Bobby is pretty popular which is demon/human.

Okay, I'm going to skip over the usual yakity-yak about the Americans and the Muslims and all of the finger-pointing this and that; It's been done to death and also kinda boring to read about. This is Fandom!Secrets, after all.

I kind of... wonder... how the locals treated you when you were in Baghdad. As a Malay and a person who has visited the Middle East only twice in his life (Egypt and Syria, the latter just a few weeks before the Arab Spring), I'm a bit curious as to how different we were treated by the locals as to others. I've always had a hunch that if I were Caucasian, a lot of people would treat me and my family differently, so I always wondered as to how other people are treated in a country far from home.

It really felt like a Torchwood episode.

Oh my god, you're right! Something felt weird about it but I couldn't think of any big problems or changes with it so I didn't know what it was, but...you're kinda right.

The last person I knew to turn cannibal ended up with a bad case of wendigo. You may want to think this through.

Yeah, that's the part that really made me despise her.

I love how stories work, where really jailworthy actions can be excused if "ah well, it's a fairy tale" but insidiously realistic abusive attitudes are horrible no matter the context ;)

G1 cartoon Shockers is passionately devoted to Megatron. It's hard to ship him with anyone else. Maybe the Rainmakers? Some experiment he made over those lonely four million years?

But yeah, there just aren't that many female Cybertronians to start with. Um, partially thanks to Shockwave :T

Not really surprised this exists, but it seems fun :) I want to hear about people's headcanons (and if anyone actually had something about me o.o)

Writers and musicians get it, too. And anyone who sews, actually. And anyone who does hair or can work on cars. People used to expect my mom to cut/perm/dye their hair for free all the time when I was growing up, and my stepdad gets bugged constantly to change people's oil or fix their cars for free. It seems like people are more willing to bug complete strangers about doing things for free when they're artists/musicians/writers, but a lot of people are just cheap and entitled.

If it were just a few hours a week I'd agree with you, but these are full-time jobs that they're trying to pass off as unpaid "experience."

This; friends come and go, stuff happens, but I think it's worse being lonely. I think back on my friends who I don't see anymore and while I sometimes miss them (I don't talk to my high school friends that much; we kind of went separate ways) I still value the times we had together. Hell, internet friends too. You have to accept that you might have disappointments if you want to have the good.
