He stabbed a pregnant woman? WTF?

she was carrying his child, the product of her repeatedly raping him. it's not quite so cut-and-dry.

oh yes and all the other things the commenter below mentioned too.

If you recall, the stabbing of Lucretia happened during a slave rebellion, after she had poisoned him and sent his girlfriend away to be repeatedly raped and die in the mines. So...that was one justified stabbing, all things considered.

I do agree with you about not being sad about his death, though. I pretty much liked no one from season 2 on, because they're all such awful people doing such awful things. On both sides.

Good to know it's okay to stab pregnant women if there's a good ~reason~

To the Rebels, no Roman is an "innocent" person. I don't particularly agree with a lot of the things Crixus did this season, nor Naevia's (though she was being supportive of him I guess), I can empathize with them. As a group, they were enjoying the high of having a position of power over those who, before the rebellion, would be making them fight to the death. I don't know whether you can really apply present morals to a situation like that, with live-long servitude and ownership.

I'm happy the show didn't pull punches with this actually, the Rebels can be the brutal beasts the Romans make them out to be.

Let's forget about him stabbing the pregnant woman.

Are people really going to defend the guy forcing the two men to kill each other over the piece of bread? Because that I'm pretty sure wasn't meant to approved by the viewer.
rivia: (Default)

[personal profile] rivia 2013-04-05 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, no, that wasn't anyone's shining moment of morality, and the show definitely doesn't frame it as such. However, as I said in my comment above, I don't think anybody, if given power and control over people who previously held it over you (generally) and owned you in every way, that they'd do any differently.

Editing to add that no, I don't think it's okay, and no I'm not defending, but I understand why the Rebels have acted like they did. If nothing else it's a nice parallel in how they're turning into the people they hate so much, perhaps even worse.

I think it was a sad, horrible moment but at the same time I liked that the writers didn't try to make us believe that all the slaves were gentlemen. Crixus wasn't always a nice man; he was a bully when we met him, so full of shit and brainwashed. They're people with flaws who make mistakes.

The world has been anything but brutal to them, so I can understand why they're being brutal too. Crixus played games with the Romans prisoners, the Romans played games with their prisoners and iirc, historical Spartacus did the same too. If I have to hate Crixus for that, then I'll have to hate most of them.

I hated that too. I was upset with a lot of the rebels this season but I think it's good the show didn't shy away from the fact that both sides had faults and neither side was entirely innocent.

I feel like one of the few people who still loved Crixus to the end (and Naevia for that matter). He made some shitty choices, but everyone on the show had made a shitty choice at one point that has fucked over someone or multiple people. That's why I love the show, because of all the messed up shit that happens, and that bad isn't always good and good isn't always bad.

This show is about warriors. And because it's about warriors in a time of horrible circumstances, people are kinda shit to each other in this show.

I didn't hate them! I thought they had some sweet moments together near the end and was sad to see him go when the time came. Although I'm never going to be a huge fan of Crixus (and never was, tbh) he had his moments (like most the other characters on the show). You're right in that no one on the show is perfect.

I'll never be down with what he and Naevia did at the start of the season, and I won't lie, he pissed me off even recently (when he hit Spartacus after Spartacus had saved Naevia), but...yea. He wasn't perfect, their lives were far from perfect, and I can still feel sympathy for them.

One of the reasons I love this show is that even though we draw the lines of hero/villain in our heads so we can define the action in the show and who we should be rooting for, nobody gets a free pass from being a total douchenozzle.

Like real life.

Don't try and judge Crixus by modern moral codes. Crixus was never supposed to be the White Knight who made all the right decisions - and neither was anyone else in this show. Lucretia raped him quite a lot, and when she wasn't raping him, her asshole husband was forcing Crixus to fight to the death for his social advancement. He wasn't allowed dignity or privacy or even the company of someone who loved him. She was beaten and sent away to be raped and worked to death and he wasn't allowed to feel anything about it.

If he did the asshole thing and stab his rapist in a way that killed both her and the child he never wanted to give her, I think he can be given a pass for that. He had no choices up until then.

Crixus did stab a pregnant woman, yes. A pregnant woman who was his owner and forced to him do whatever she said for years. A pregnant woman who raped him repeatedly. First to assert her own power and control after suffering a personal loss, then for pleasure, then to impregnate her because her husband could not. A pregnant woman who upon discovering that Crixus was in love with another slave, beat that slave and sold her off to be brutally raped and tortured and presumably killed whenever her new owners were done with her.

Was what Crixus did to Lucretia messed up? Sure but no more so than what she did to him. (And I personally find it hard to fault a rape victim for wanting revenge against their rapist.)

I loved Crixus. I loved Lucretia. Neither one of them were good people but I don't think the show ever presented them as such.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Idgi. If a fetus is 'not a baby/real person yet', why is it particularly reprehensible to kill a pregnant woman? If being pregnant vs not being pregnant is strictly 'something a woman chooses to do to her own body' then what gives it more moral weight then...idk, a woman who chooses to wear her hair long instead of cutting it?

Tch. All the "but he stabbed a pregnant woman, that's bad" - if you give a woman who was raped the choice to abort because she shouldn't be forced to carry a rape baby, am man who was raped and produced a child that way should have a say in it if the child is born or not. So stabbing her to get rid of the child is just another form of rape baby abortion.
