Yeah, I agree. I can see why people like his writing - I do, myself - but he's not as great as some people make him out to be imo

I hear far more people saying he's overrated than I hear people overrating him.

Yeah, I kind of agree. I mean- his concept of Idris was excellent, but I wouldn't count 'The Doctor's Wife' as one of my top favorite episodes.

Hasn't he only wrote one episode? It was a good episode, even if it was...kinda "him" in tone. I kinda wish that he didn't portray the TARDIS as a beautiful quirky woman.

I kinda agree. His ideas and his world-building are great. The writing itself is a bit hit-and-miss for me.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-15 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. For me, he's someone where all of his influences and favorite writers are much, much more interesting and generally much better writers than he is himself. So he has excellent taste and knowledge, and he seems like a decent guy, but he's not a great writer on his own terms.

Except for Sandman, that's just dope.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-15 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
He...only wrote one episode of Doctor Who. Not "Doctor Who stuff".

I didn't like the Who episode at all, really, which was deeply disappointing: I was hoping to get Sandman-style creepy mystery and instead we got teasing setup for that and then... the Doctor flirting. Argh. I've heard it was an incredibly expensive ep to do and I'm sort of boggled, because you could do the script on an empty stage without losing anything; it's 75% banter, 20% chasing down tunnels, and 5% actual plot.

That said, I love what he does with characters. His protagonists can be sort of iffy -- too much trying to be an audience stand-in -- but the surrounding characters are amazing.

i dunno, i think he writes with a very convincing voice most times. if that makes sense. i am not about to crawl up his ass but the ending to sandman was probably one of the best endings to anything that i have ever read.

also i follow him on tumblr and i love his ask box responses, they are great

(Anonymous) 2013-04-15 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, the only work of him that I genuinely enjoy was The Sandman comics.
The same I can say of John Green, awesome person, awful writer (his case is worst on my book than Gaiman's)
ariakas: (Default)

[personal profile] ariakas 2013-04-15 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Though it appears to be a more popular opinion than I thought it would be (but I thought so before it was cool).

(Anonymous) 2013-04-15 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Rather than being overrated, I think he's probably just overhyped. He's reached that point where it's popular to adore him, even if the people doing so don't really know much of his stuff. Likewise, people tend to get into his stuff no matter what just because they do really like him.

That is sometimes annoying and draining, but I see more people oozing with love than I do insisting he poos gold.

I like Sandman and the novels of his that I've read, I loved "The Doctor's Wife," and I can't stand his short stories. I can think of maybe two that even made an impact on me; the rest read like a particular style of pretentious one-shot fanfiction that thinks it's above letting the reader know what's going on.

(The two I liked, for the record, were "A Study in Emerald" and "Other People." I think I like Gaiman best when he's taking existing stories and re-weaving them in interesting ways.)

I like his characters, and I love his ideas. His execution can be a bit hit-or-miss for me -- with more misses than hits the longer the work is.

I think his short stories are awesome. And Sandman -- which reads like a bunch of novellas and short stories, to me.

I was disappointed by American Gods and Anansi Boys. So I'm with you, OP.

I like him, his blog, I think he's got interesting stuff to say (I wish I could afford TLA this year to see him speak), but I find his writing boring and some scenes in really bad taste. I've never been able to finish a book of his that I've tried. I keep meaning to give the graphic novels a try though.

I have started reading a bunch of his novels, but I've only ever finished his short story collection. I just get so far, then give up.

I don't find his style bad, I just can't seem to push through to the end. I don't know why.

I just wish he'd STFU about Amanda Palmer. No one cares about your bimbo trophy wife, dude.

Completely agreed, especially wrt "The Doctor's Wife", which I felt was the weakest, most terrible episode in a season of weak, terrible episodes.

To be frank, as I mentioned in another comment above, I thought The Doctor's Wife was a Moffat episode at first due to the really blatant, gross sexism and objectification going on, the utter lack of plot and the obvious reliance on "clever" verbal banter to keep audience interest over actually writing anything that was good. Finding out that it was the episode written by Neil Gaiman, which had been touted by fans as undoubtedly to be the best episode in the season, was... well, disappointing to say the least, and I lost a lot of respect for Gaiman after having watched it.

I still haven't read much of his books and stories really. I think he's over-hyped. I'd planned on checking him out if his Doctor Who ep was any good, but considering it was an abysmal failure... I don't have much faith that his own writing is any better.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-16 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Sandman, but nothing else he's ever written has really appealed. I didn't hate it; it was all just kind of... meh. Also, I liked the Stardust movie way more than the book, which is unusual because I almost always prefer books over their movie adaptations.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-16 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not looking forward to more NG Who episodes. Every time I think of him, hear Idris telling the Doctor that the TARDIS door opens outward and even says so. The thing is, the sign she's talking about is for the door to the phone. Since she is the TARDIS and has been stuck in the form of a police box for hundreds of years, she would know that. That no one on the show noticed how fucked up NG's script was because they were so busy fanboying over him pisses me off.

It sums up everything that's wrong with the show since Moffat took over.

I can understand why a lot of people don't like his writing. I've seen quite a few people say as much, though.

Personally, I think a lot of his books are actually more enjoyable in audiobook form. Something about his writing style translates really well to being read aloud (plus he generally gets great people to do the readings) and a lot of things that can fall a bit flat while reading them stand out in audiobook form.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-16 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Looks like lots of people agree with you, OP! I'm the opposite though - while it isn't without its problems, in generally I really like writing, but I like him less and less as time goes on.

I'm not a Gaiman fan, but considering that some people make him out to practically be a fantasy warrior-knight who rides draconic unicorns and shoots down Cthulhu for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and impulsive snacks, it would be hard for him not to be overrated.
