Right because it's wrong/misogynistic to hate a female character. I forgot that a character like Ros was such a great female role model. Fuck you.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-29 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-29 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The only thing I don't like about Ros is that she seems to be everywhere at once. She's the only whore given a name or personality by the show, so she keeps getting inserted into all manner of situations, and the plausibility is starting to wear a bit thin. Maybe if she had been paired with Alayaya... omg, that would be awesome. They would be like Charlie's Angels minus all the stupid bullcrap.

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-04-29 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, basically. It's not Ros specifically, it's that she's everywhere, and often scenes with her feel derailed and fairly needless.

I don't see why they couldn't have used Alayaya instead of Ros, aside from the fact that it wouldn't have made much sense for her to be at Winterfell

Ros is there for plot exposition and soft-core porn. I have zero interest in either.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-29 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
And I forgot that we had to consider a character a role model to like them.

And female characters have to be role models because...?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really see how Ros is such a bad female role model (I haven't read the books) What are you referring to?

I love Talisa! While I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed that we don't get to meet the Westerlings, I think Talissa is a way better match for Robb than Jeyne was. There's something incredibly Stark-like in that even though she's the Queen, she's still a healer/medic. I think Ned would have been thrilled to have her as a daughter-in-law.

I don't think you really understand what all the criticism is about.

[personal profile] lieu 2013-04-29 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. Not to mention that (imo?) as much of the criticism is about how the circumstances of their wedding were changed in a way that paints them both much less sympathetically as they are objections to characterization changes.

The response to Talisa is precisely that she ISN'T Jeyne Westerling, that the writers basically took a completely new character, wedged her in the series, and made her invincible, thus spitting on the struggle of every female character in the series because she's neither afraid of social status, answering to men, or rape--which is the major struggle of most of the female characters in the series.

This isn't including how completely she's fucked Robb's character. Previously, Robb married Jeyne out of obligation, because it was the honorable thing to do. Now, Robb married Talisa because of love, which makes him incredibly selfish and irresponsible, which makes him less sympathetic as a character.

I don't think you know where the criticism is coming from. It's not that Talisa sucks as a character because she's a woman, she sucks as a character because D&D completely misunderstand this universe and the struggles of its female inhabitants. Why do you think G.R.R.M. requested her name be changed? Because she's too different from Jeyne Westerling.

TY for writing this up. I was considering writing a comment detailing all the issues with Talisa, but you did it for me.

It's also annoying that Jeyne is pretty explicitly this typical noblewoman. She's sweet, but she doesn't challenge gender norms. But then D&D decided that wasn't ~good enough~, so they created Talisa who isn't ~like other girls~ (she wasn't even going to marry until she was dickmatized by Robb!). Talisa who can just decide to walk away from her obligations, life and home in Volantis and mosey on over to Westeros to be a battlefield nurse because she feels like it without facing any problems or complications.

Now, Robb married Talisa because of love, which makes him incredibly selfish and irresponsible, which makes him less sympathetic as a character.

But from a modern standpoint, his love for her makes him *more* sympathetic to us. He's breaking from the status quo, and marrying someone that is a good person and who he has genuine feelings for. That's (hopefully) the type of relationship we the viewers hope to have with someone. Sure, his marriage to Talisa makes Robb less Ned-like, since it won't be The Pursuit of Honor that will be his downfall. Instead, it's more of a doomed romance thing. Which I'm actually ok with. I'd like for someone in Westeros to at least have a halfways-fulfilling romantic life for once.

Eh, I liked Jeyne better as a character, or, rather, the cynical and bitter part of me liked the machinations of her family, and I'll be forever disappointed that a boring romance replaced that. Unless, of course, Talisa turns out to be working for the same people that the Westerling's were working for, in which case I will approve.

But yeah, the only problem I have with Talisa is that she's a bit too much of a boring "good" person with no real flaws or agendas. But hey, maybe she'll end up being Ned Stark II, another reminder that being a good and honorable person gets you killed.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-29 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I never thought about what might happen to Talisa after all the ugliness is said and done, but I have a feeling it will be different than what Jeyne did. And I'm actually really excited to see which way this will go.

I've seen more people disliking her character because she's terribly written/her subplot has affected Robb and Catelyn's stories than because she's "perfectly lady like". But maybe we hang in different parts of the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I don't frequent fandom for GoT but I'd assume a lot of people dislike Ros and Tasila, whatever her name is, because they aren't canon characters and are rather needless. It's like the show is taking a sandbox full of toys that people love and then inserting their own toys which interrupt what the other toys are doing and they're like "you need to play with these". Get out of my sandbox, foo

Other people above have said it better than I could, but really, it boils down to the fact that you have absolutely no idea why people don't like Talisa (either that or no idea what constitutes good writing, but we'll give you the benefit of the doubt).

I, for one, though, think the character will be completely salvaged in terms of believability so long as she turns out to have been a Lannister spy.
