Okay, I'm just going to repost what I said upthread, because I hate hate HATE the patronizing tone of your comment.

FUCK THAT FUCKING BULLSHIT "WRITE FOR YOURSELF" LINE. There is NOTHING WRONG with wanting, or even needing some feedback for something you put time and effort into. Do you know what "writing for yourself and nobody else" is? Masturbation. It can be fun, it can be enjoyable, and for some people it's all they need, but some of us are content with diddling our own brains. I've written "for myself and nobody else." It was all either crap or something I totally lost interest in. I cannot write a complete story from beginning to end without getting some kind of feedback.

Every single time a writer (and it's only writers who get this, no one scolds artists for wanting feedback) wishes that they could get more reviews/kudos/hits/any other kind of feedback, someone always gives that patronizing, obnoxious "you should write for yourself and nobody else!" line. You know what? I don't write for myself, and I don't want to write for myself. I write for other people, and to do that I need to know that other people are paying attention.

I don't need everyone to review. I certainly don't need everyone to like it, but I need to know that someone at least read it.

Write for yourself, edit and publish for others.

nayrt

I do agree with what you are saying, but you are wrong in that artists don't get this. And it gets worse in that, people expect us to be okay when anyone takes our work and changes it or decides that a good feedback would be "Hey! This is great work, but the characters you chose are completely stupid together and you wasted all that time, will you redraw it with the characters I want instead?"
Especially nowadays on tumblr. The most feedback we get is likes or reblogs. Hardly ever have I received a comment that wasn't just to tell what I could change about it to suit their personal ship better.

You wouldn't have this problem if you wrote what I wanted you to write in the first place. DUH!

This

When I write for myself I keep the fic private unless I feel like having it posted. That's about 99% of myself.

Fanfic is part of social interaction in the fandom.

Why should anyone continue posting their stuff if there is no evidence of anyone reading it? It's not "holding your fics hostage" or whatever that bullshit is.

The readers who say this are entitled. And lazy, imo, when they don't leave any sort of feedback, even if it is to say, I'd like to see more. Especially if the author says any feedback.

This, thank you. I do write for myself, but I enjoy it when readers like what I write. It helps keep me motivated to keep trying and improving. The thought that writers (or any creative people) should just keep creating in a vacuum and they're somehow disrespecting the purity of their art to want encouragement is just ridiculously entitled.

You need to relax. If you do everything to please others, well you've gone and put yourself out there to be disappointed, since no one is obligated to let you know they are paying attention.

I cannot write a complete story from beginning to end without getting some kind of feedback.

Seriously? We all like to be read, sure, but unable to even *complete* a story? I find that mind-boggling. I mean, my beta reader doesn't even see it until it's finished in the first draft.

*awaits storm of foul-mouthed accusation, but...really*

tbf, I am the same - for me the actual writing of the story is the hard part, I struggle with actually getting the ideas and pictures in my head to become tangible words and sentences and I find that I´m not motivated to go to the effort of putting the whole thing down on paper (well, screen) if I can just as easily let it play out in my head. That´s not to say I don´t want to write it, I just struggle with the process, especially if I have no motivation to continue.

If I write something and I know that other people are enjoying it, then I will more likely go to the effort of getting it out there and actually physically writing it out. So, like the OP, for me, getting some sort of feedback lets me know to keep going and the effort is worth it.

Obviously, not everyone has the same writing processes but wanting some indication that continuing with publishing the story is the motivation some of us need to keep publishing.

AYRT. Yeah, very different from my own process. I enjoy getting the plot, characterisation and dialogue just the way *I* want them before letting anyone else (i.e. my beta) have a look-see. Once it led to a major re-write (and my beta was absolutely right to suggest it) but usually it's just fne tuning.

OTOH I almost never publish WsIP. I usually wait to finish (and post-beta polish) the story before posting.

Okay, I agreed with you upthread, but I didn't notice that line about artists. Sorry but we get it. A lot. Along with other stuff. Most of the time nowadays thanks to instagram and tumblr culture all we get is some likes if we're lucky and some reblogs with no comment. THEN someone reposts it and we're supposed to be flattered. We're also supposed to be flattered when someone else pretends to have drawn it. THEN we get critique from fanfic writers who are all "But you can draw for money! We can't do that!". THEN you get those people who constantly beg for freebies.

And then if you mention you would like more comments and some interaction with fandom you'll get "Omg, you should draw for yourself." "No one owes you anything." "Aw, you artists have it so baaad~ you get X notes and I get only Y~~".

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
This this! not to mention, I've noticed a severe discrepancy in regards to say, popular writers and "popular" art works. Popular writer gets a lot of followers if their story was good and so their next story gets a large amount of focus and attention solely because it was made by them.

Artist? We don't get that. There are a very rare few cases that do, but a majority of that, that I've noticed has been art blogs who don't draw for quality, they draw ask replies, simple little comics that go along with fanon and whatnot. I've seen multiple amazing artists who have like 3k notes on one fandom favorite, and all the rest of their work has like 5. It gets really discouraging tbh.

What's weird to me on tumblr is that it so often feels like people don't think anyone should comment - not the artists themselves, so much as the greater population of consumers who don't want any of that awful text cluttering up the stream of photos on their blog.

I don't get it. :|

But I'm sorry to see artists getting the shit end of the stick, especially when someone copies their style and ideas and then "dude chill the fuck out, take it for the compliment it is." Which is always shaky ground when it comes to developing styles, but there's usually a pretty clear line drawn between something practically looking ripped off and something looking ""inspired"".
