Re: I need help

Integration by parts and u-substitution are the times you're allowed to treat du/dx the derivative as a fraction. Most of the time, you're not supposed to do that, but in this case you just go ahead and pretend it is. :)

Does that help?

I get that, although I didn't have as strong a reaction as you.

OTOH, since I've long since learned to stop making even a token attempt to be sympathetic to the characters in the episode Moffat writes, I feel free to express admiration for how powerful and visceral that scene was in its awfulness. Like, if they were completely different characters, it'd have been totally amazing. Moffat's writing generally doesn't lend itself much to raw brutal emotion, but that scene did it really well. Really great acting too.

This is an awesome comment and you should feel good about yourself. Also, great job making amazing stuff that gets mistaken fro factory made :)

Lost thread?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone know which secret post contains that general comments thread about someone disliking America? It had ill_omened in a long part of the thread and some great discussion by anons?

I'm just curious, but I'd appreciate the help if anyone can find it. :)

Well, I ship Clint/Natasha like burning, and I get what you're saying. It's not so much that I dislike the ship as it's that lately every time a new Clint/Natasha fic gets posted, it turns out that it's really a Clint/Phil fic.

Really, I just want people to stop tagging Clint/anyone else fics with the Clint/Natasha tag.

Re: What fandoms are getting tired of?

MCU.

I really loved the Avengers, okay, but Iron Man 3 was sort of ugh and the next Thor movie is everything I don't want, but that seems to be all everyone wants to talk about these days. :/ Actual Avengers discussion is dead, so I'll probably be moving on after I finish my big bang fics.

Serious answer

I'd argue that at least the source material of the Wizard of Oz is much more adult.

Unless you find extended Free Silver metaphors childish.

Re: I need help

Because that's the way it works when one differentiates a function with two unknowns. You kind of need to acknowledge the fact that you're differentiating the function with respect to x, not to u. So, when you have u, you can't just write "du", you need to add this /dx. Technically speaking, this is not a fraction, but it does behave as one.
Nope, I'm glad if I'm of any help)

Hi! I'm logged in now. Take a look at this page (http://www.math.ucdavis.edu/~kouba/CalcTwoDIRECTORY/usubdirectory/) and start reading the section from the words "Now the method of u-substitution will be illustrated on this same example. Begin with"

The sentence "Now "pretend" that the differentiation notation" (the 4th sentence down from "Now the method of u-substitution...") is the part you're getting stuck at? Hm. Maybe if I wrote your example this way it'll help you understand.

Let Y = 1+X
dY/dx = 1
(dY/dx)*(dx) = (1)*(dx)
(dY)*(dx/dx) = (1)*(dx)
dY = 1 dx (because dx/dx = 1 )

Do you see how I got from the 2nd equation (dY/dx = 1) to the last equation (dY = 1 dx)?

Now instead of Y, we say U
Let U = 1+X
dU/dx = 1
(dU/dx)*(dx) = (1)*(dx)
(dU)*(dx/dx) = (1)*(dx)
dU = 1 dx

Are you okay with this so far?

No, it's a Canadian/American co-production commissioned by BBC Worldwide.

Re: I need help

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
So there's no reason, it just is? And it's like that?

THAT MAKES SO MUCH MORE SENSE OMG.

I THOUGHT the teachers were just assuming everyone knew why and not understanding when I was asking (I can't words sometimes), but that's just one of the rules of integral calculus?

Dishonored crossovers?

[personal profile] inkmage 2013-05-07 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I would love to see Dishonored crossed over with... basically anything, because it's such a fascinating world and there's so much cleverness you'd have to do to fit it in with any other world, in a fusion or a straight-up crossover or whatever. Anyone got anything?

I have no problem with the fact that they have almost no interaction -- I'm a big believer in extrapolating potential dynamics rather than having to stick to only what's depicted on screen.

However, I totally get how the treatment of the ship as basically canon and just randomly putting it into the background of non-C/C fics would be completely fucking irritating. Like, they just kinda throw it in there so blithely that it sometimes seems as though there was some canon scene that explicitly mentioned "Clint and Coulson are canon!" that I somehow missed.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel really stupid now, because I didn't get that part, but now I've gotten it explained to me, and I feel so much better omg.

Thank you!

Yes, it's from S7. It's "The Angels Take Manhattan".

Yeah, it's from The Angels Take Manhattan.

Re: Lost thread?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
There's been more than one such thread.

Are you thinking of the one where there was a non-fandom secrets thread and someone was like "I like living in America, I think it's a good place to live. Not that other places are bad, I just think it's a good place" and then ill_omened was like "Actually America is the worst and look at all these statistics about how terrible America is" and then we had a nice long argument?

Or are you thinking of a different one?
dreemyweird: (Default)

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2013-05-07 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Tbh, I think what the author meant was that they're going to create a fandom for a real canon source, not make up their own. And in this case it is... sad.

Question, how did you get (dx) to (dx/dx)? Wouldn't (dx/dx)=1 and =/= (dx)?
