Agree, when we found out he was Moriarty I felt disappointed.

I think that OTT acting is something people either love or hate in a villain. I like it because it is just so unexpected from what you expect villains to be.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I think the OTT-ness is part of the charm. For some people.

I enjoy my over dramatic villains, thank you.

I've only ever seen this character on gifsets reblogged by one of the people I followed on tumblr.

All I know is that I literally burst out laughing at pretty much every one, even without hearing the audio or knowing any of the context. Especially the "Stayin' Alive" bit.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I kind of agree. Sometimes I think it's sort of funny and fine, but other times, meh. Not helped by the fact that the only other thing I saw Andrew Scott in was Blackout, in which he was just as OTT and with even less reason (in my opinion).

[personal profile] thezmage 2013-05-14 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Some comedian, I wanna say Ardal O'Hanlon but that doesn't seem right, had a bit about how Hannibal Lechter wouldn't be nearly as threatening without his British accent. He then proceeded to do a version with a Newfoundland (I think) accent. That is what this Moriarty sounds like to me.

I didn't like him either. He just seemed too silly. I know that's the point, but it got old very quickly.

I never got it either. He even got a BAFTA. *shrugs*

I guess it's because the protagonists are heavily on the grey side in this interpretation? In the very first episode, Sherlock tortures a name out of a dying man; I supposed to have a real villain, you have to up the ante.

Oh god, Moriarty was such a bland villain that his OTT behavior just annoyed me. Also, his voice. I hated that voice. He sounded like a 12-year-old boy going through puberty.

Yeah, but he fits in that particular retelling of Sherlock. Sherlock, the show, can be campy at times. It would only suit it to have an over the top villain. A dead serious, understated Moriarty would have paled next to the larger than life figure of Moffat's Sherlock.

In his case I can see the logic for it. I think the aim was to deliberately create the impression of instability, childishness and pettiness, coupling them with ruthlessness, to create a character you'd laugh at or frown at if you met him on the street, and then he'd shoot you. Or worse. This version of Moriarty owes more to the Joker and the Batman rogues gallery than he does to the original Moriarty, who was more your spider-in-his-web, cool and collected type.

If it helps, imagine him as a younger (and human, obviously) Ratigan.

Thanks. I find him absolutely TERRIBLE and everybody I know adores him and thinks he's an amazing villain. I find him at the same time boring and annoying, which is the worst possible combo for a villain. And not threatening at all.

Yeah, IA... But, honestly, there's only one villain on Sherlock I've liked in any way; Jeff the cabbie from the first episode. The others are either ridiculous cliches or really bland.

I think Joker-type villains are pretty boring and it would have been great if Sherlock had kept him as a professor - some sort of pop science guru, giving TED talks while running a criminal empire.

I saw him in gifsets on tumblr long before I ever watched the show, and I honestly thought it couldn't be real, that there was some fandom inside joke I wasn't getting. When I actually watched the show, at first my reaction was just pure "WTF they were being serious?"

Then he grew on me. Now I absolutely love how loopy he is. It's charming. And hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I like him *because* of just how crazy the actor plays him. To me there's nothing more scary than someone who's personality can do a complete 180 turn in the space of a second. Going from happy and quirky to terrifyingly aggressive in the blink of an eye. Give me that over a permanently evil villain any day.
