Weight loss...

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
So a long time ago I posted anonymously in a secret thread about weight loss that I wanted to lose weight. And... I did. I joined SparkPeople, watched my calories and exercised, and I lost 38 lbs. and am down to 125. (I'm 5'3")

Now I'm just afraid I'll gain it back because I keep hearing everybody does. Though I'm trying to keep counting calories for now at least, and definitely to keep exercising.

You need to just keep going with it. I learned the hard way, I stopped doing everything I used to do because I finally got my to my goal. Losing it the second time was even worse since I had to work harder but I really had to keep with my routine and just got used to it. I've kept my 105 (5'1) for a year now so I must be doing something right.

No, they don't. This is what happens to people who give up and stop exercising and go back to eating the way they used to.

Anyway, well done, anon. Keep up the good work and you'll have no problems with staying in this weight.

I lost almost 60 lbs with SparkPeople a few years ago. I've managed to keep off 50 of that with periodic maintenance.

Yeah, you'll gain back a little (probably), but don't let that get you down. Unless you plan on counting calories for the rest of your life, it's going to happen. Fear not - if you're really committed, you'll manage to work it right back off :-)

I'm glad to hear you were successful!

I actually don't find counting calories that much of a pain, at least not with computer help. I'm not sure I'll do it for the rest of my life but actually the idea doesn't bother me that much. Especially since I can miss a day here and there without it really mattering that much.

The thing about dieting is that it's a constant thing. If you go "I'm just dieting to lose fifty pounds and then stopping," then yes, you'll gain it back. If you stay vigilant, though, you won't (barring outside circumstances.)

Take a look at the strategies for maintaining weight loss.

Thanks for the link! I looked up some suggestions but I hadn't found that exact study, at least not in study form.

I do eat more than 1300 calories a day, so that part makes me nervous. But I don't eat that much more, and I'll definitely keep measuring my weight and see if it goes up on the amount of calories I'm eating.

If you've made sustainable lifestyle changes in order to lose that weight (and you sustain those changes) you probably won't gain it back.

Congrats on losing the weight! Just remember to keep up with your healthy habits and I'm sure you'll be fine. :3

The key is that you have to keep doing what you're doing to maintain the weight you are now. For ex: You can't stop exercising and start eating fast food all the time again or you'll gain the weight back.

They gain it back because they stop with the exercise and return to old eating habits.

Keeping with it will keep you healthy (I hope? Exercise is good at least!) and my understanding is it's okay to not meet the calorie intake each day (say a party with cake mmmm) as long as you're not violating it every day every week?

I tend to find when I'm doing lots of exercise, I can eat whatever I like and lots of it without any weight gain.

Don't panic about a few pounds coming back, it probably just means you need to switch up your exercise routine a bit. Try different sports or different machines or classes if you go to the gym.

If you can't get out of the house or don't have much time, try something like this: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/05/09/the-scientific-7-minute-workout/

Most importantly, don't forget to give yourself a day off every week. Exercise should be giving you more energy throughout the day, not less. Don't overdo it.

Best of luck!

Congrats on accomplishing what you wanted! I think I'll give SparkPeople a shot myself, thanks for mentioning it. I was under the impression that one only gains it back wholesale (aside from being inflicted with sudden injury and illness) when one used unsustainable methods to lose it in the first place, like crash diets and intensive exercise routines that would actually do harm if kept up for years on end instead of the few months necessary to lose a certain amount of pounds. That's why dieting and fad exercise might not work long-term, but permanent changes in eating habits and activity do. But anyway, good luck maintaining what's comfortable for you!
