In all honesty, YKINMK applies to pretty much any fandom preference.

Pretty much this; it's become kind of a general term at this point.

YKINMK is pretty much enabling of things like rape and pedophilia and people who engage in it disgust me.

YANA. I do actually like some comfort, but I like the comfort to be brief and mostly implied. Like, I DGAF about the "slow healing path", to quote that other similar secret a few weeks ago, and in fact cannot fucking stand reading the healing process because it's so damn boring.

However, I do sometimes like a scene after the hurt where, say, the character goes to/is found by his friends and they jump all over him to start calming him down/bandaging his wounds/cleaning him up/calling the hospital, and tell him it's alright and they're going to take care of him -- but we don't have to actually see the boring-as-fuck process of them taking care of him. I just like the implication that the comfort will take place.

Although a lot of hurty fics, especially short ones, I also like it to end as soon as the hurt ends, without any comfort or aftermath.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
This. Maximum hurt, and minimum comfort - not that I don't want some comforting, I just don't want to see the whole healing process.

I think at this point "kink" is used for anything you enjoy a wholeeeeee lot.

That's how I use it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
+1, it doesn't need to be something that gives you specifically sexual pleasure.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
That's how it seems to be used. I see people using the word "fetish" as well as "kink," so I'm guessing they mean different things by them.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the opposite. I like very little "hurt" and would adore a fic that was all about "comfort" (and by comfort I mean the entire recovery process, not just snuggles and hugs or whatever).

The whole YKINMK is more a generalized "I don't like that and that's okay" thing, so I think it's perfectly fine to use it in this situation.

OT but it took me forever to figure out that was Batman. My eyes could not parse it at all. :\a

It took me a bit of studying to get it as well.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
haha, I'm exactly the same, sometimes I even stop reading fic when it gets to the actual comfort part... just give me suffering and angst thanks. I wish there was more fic when the hurt part didn't end in a happy end, in general I'd find it more satisfying (for me obviously) if at least the character wasn't the same happy person as before. (I sound really mean saying this...)

I think I agree with this. At least, in stories where the character has been through SO MUCH, where the events are extreme, I feel that the character can't just bounce back to being the person they were.

I think there's sometimes a desire on the author's part to completely deconstruct a character, to break them down so completely - and yet, once they've done that, the author seems to realize "I broke it!" and is sad, so they back away from that result and somehow, magically, the character heals and is whole again. Which rings false to me. Which is maybe what you're saying?

I like tons of hurt and tons of comfort, especially when not too OTT.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't there a term for all-hurt-no-comfort? Whumpfic or something like that? (I'm not a fic person, so feel free to correct me on that.)

If when you say "kink" you mean BDSM, and you think BDSM is necessarily sexual, you're naïve. It doesn't have to be at all. So vicariously enjoy the fantasy pain of others, OP.

1. Kinks can be entirely non-sexual in nature, so YKINMK still applies.

2. Have you looked into whump?

[personal profile] inkedfeathers 2013-05-26 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
I thought that was the norm in fandom. Breaking characters is so much fun~
