Right there with you, anon. I appreciate a bit of fanservice as much as the next girl, but not at the cost of consistent characterization.

Imo, Loras has his needs even if he's still mourning for Renly.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched the third season yet, but please tell me that Loras didn't cheat on Renly. That would be too much for me and so out of character. Dropped forever.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Please tell me you're not actually dropping the series because of this secret.

Because, uh, there's some spoilery context you're missing.

Lol. Evidently you haven't seen much of Season Two, either.

Loras can't cheat on Renly. He's been dead since halfway through season 2. :D

Straight people can't win, can they? If a gay character moves on after his partner dies, it's all "OOOH HOMOPHOBE YOU THINK ALL GAYS ARE PROMISCUOUS!!!" If a gay character tries to hold his relationship together after his partner dies, it's all "OOOH HOMOPHOBE YOU THINK ALL GAYS ARE NECROPHILES!!!"

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
How is being faithful to your dead partner nechrophile? That's true love, not necrophilia. What the hell.

Probably wasting my time replying to obvious troll bait, but in the books Loras clearly never gets over Renly's death and says of him "when the sun has set, no candle can replace it," clearly rejecting the idea of settling for anyone else. Whereas in the show not only has he apparently totally ok with banging other guys, he doesn't even seem to be grieving anymore, which is just really off-base from his book characterization and disappointing from what is pretty much the only visible queer character on the show atm.

It isn't the sex that is bothersome. At this point in the book Loras is INCREDIBLY still torn up over Renly's death. There are two very overt references to it. When he's first talking to Sansa, being cordial and nice, she brings up Renly and how horrible it must be for Margaery to have lost her husband, he just goes "...yes. For her." And then drops her hand from his arm, and becomes cold and distant. Sansa can't really figure out what hte hell she did wrong.

Second, Tyrion talks to him, and when he expresses that he isn't interested in marrying, or having children, Tyrion asks, "And what of love?" to which Loras replies, with his most famous line, "When the sun has set, no candle can replace it." Tyrion makes a bit of a jape against that line, and Loras reacts badly, prompting Tyrion to call him "prickly".

Yes, having sex doesn't mean he's stopped mourning--people reach out in their pain physically, sometimes. But at this point in the book he's still very upset and devoted to Renly and his memory. In the show, he seems to have completely moved on they seem to have dropped his best fucking lines. Which is completely out of character for him.

When the sun has set no candle can replace it? Seems show!Loras just needs a glade plug in.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-05-31 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Granted, I can't remember a damn thing that happened after like the middle of Season 2, but wasn't Renly killed somewhere in there?

(That being said, if I'm missing something else entirely due to basically having only seen up until mid/late S2, feel free to correct me. I liked Loras and Renly and am quite looking forward to seeing the aftermath of their relationship/Renly's death once I am able to start catching up in earnest, even if that means Loras moving on.)

I was bothered more by the execution rather than the idea of him having sex with someone other than Renly. They've really leaned hard on gay stereotypes for his character.

Don't blame the scene, blame the writers that have completely forgotten about Loras characterization in the books and changed his whole story.

Seriously, we're on what, episode 9 this sunday? And Loras has at least mentioned Renly how many times?

***SPOILERS FOR BOOK 4***

Given Loras' current state, I would actually like to see him become a gay version of the Hound.

And *maybe* shack up with Sandor at some point down the line.

"According to (occasional writer and story editor) Bryan Cogman, the original idea in the writing was that Loras was still grieving for Renly and ended up in bed with Olyvar last week out of loneliness. I can only gather that that wasn't clear in the script and the actual shooting of the scene didn't reflect it at all."

But yeah, if that was even their intention, it failed spectacularly.

I didn't really take that message away from the scene, beyond it being extremely gratuitous, but it did kind of strike me as painting Loras with modern stereotypes and it felt like it replaced his personality with them.

The fact that Loras screwed someone didn't bother me, but I do think he would have had some emotional fallout from out. But I basically hate everything that leads back to Littlefinger in the show, so fuck it anyway.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I just feel like the show is really doing Loras a disservice. In the books, he is clearly pretty smart on top of being torn up over losing Renly. So while I wouldn't be completely surprised for him to have "make me feel better!" sex, I do find it baffling that they're portraying him as some kind of airhead who'd confess his family's scheming to some random schmoe right after. That scene played poorly on so many levels.

Weird because I found this scene incredibly tame in comparison to All The Het Sex in every episode. Sometimes it's nice when there's a bit of homosexuality to break up a bit.

Most ridiculous secret ever. Political correctness gone wild. Not to mention slut shaming. Maybe if it weren't a show where so many of the straight people are this "promiscuous".

There's a recent interview with Finn Jones where he talks about how Loras is unsure and lost and making rash decisions, that he's too proud to face up to how much Renly's death has affected him so he's putting up a front. And that he's still grieving for Renly and just kind of irrational, but he's not showing it. And while I appreciate how much Finn is trying to work around what the show gave him to work with regarding Loras' character, it mostly just makes me sad/annoyed because you can tell how much more Finn would like to do with Loras.

(Aha, found it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VzbVoVE4Ck the question about Renly is at 2:40ish.)

Also, I'm still really pissed they cut out that scene with Loras and Margaery from S2.

FWIW watching the minute of screentime he got at Sansa and Tyrion's wedding, I did get the feeling that Loras hates his life right now and has just kind of checked out of it.
