Are you serious? Anton Yelchin, He Who Is More Adorable Than a Basket of Puppies, is barely in the movie?

Welp, there goes my motivation to see it.

but the original actor wasn't Indian, either!

Yeah, but you have to realize at the time TOS was made, having any kind of minority actor play that part was a Big Deal. In this day and age, getting a white guy to do it just feels like a big step backwards.

[personal profile] fauxkaren 2013-06-03 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
lol yeah the defense that several decades ago they had a non-Indian actor play the role of an Indian character isn't really a good reason as to why they should still be doing that today.

Everyone forgets that in the original series they had to darken Ricardo Montalban's skin with make-up because he was too white and not ethnic enough to be Khan.

I wonder if like the show, the movie had hired an actor of Hispanic heritage and darkened his skin, how much outrage would there be. I am sure there would be boatloads but I wonder how much and in what way.

I wanted to see this movie, but I ended up disappointed, because the first one was so much better. It would have been better with slightly less explosions, and more character interaction. Also, way WAY too derivative of Wrath of Khan, which just makes it look like a poor imitation, and plot holes up the wazoo.

Good eye candy in all the effects; just don't think about anything for more than three minutes, or it will all fall apart.

Wait...Khan is SUPPOSED to be an Indian name?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-06-03 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I must be a terrible Indian, because I just assumed that was an alien name that sounded like an Indian one, at most was inspired by it. I didn't think it was supposed to an Indian name or character! o.O

But yes, also disappointed by the lack of Chekov. :(

I know nothing of the original series, so I didn't even know that Khan was supposed to be Indian.

Was he truly meant to be Indian in the original though, or are people just assuming that because his name sounds vaguely Indian-ish (sort of I guess)?

Chekov should have been in the film more, yes. (He was adorable as hell in the first one and though he wasn't exactly featured in that movie either, his scenes were better and more fun.) Bones should have too. (But although Bones is awesome and Karl Urban's acting is spot on, his metaphors annoyed me this time. It hurts to type this.)

At least Scotty got plenty of screentime and Sulu had his shining moment. Uhura speaking Klingon was neat, too.

As for Khan, I liked Ben in the role despite everything, but I'm tired of hearing about him too. (Just in general. Man is there a lot of fanfiction centered around him...)

I guess what I'm getting around to is I don't think anyone believes it was a perfect film, but I enjoyed it very much anyway. *shrugs*

I can understand being done with the fandom, but ... can you maybe separate from fandom and enjoy the movie or not on its own merits?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-04 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I really enjoyed the movie from a pure entertainment standpoint? But as a fan and a feminist, I had many problems with it.
I think because there was just so much going on onscreen it was easy to put the bad stuff out of my mind.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-04 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I...feel kind of the same way, OP. I mean, I'm disappointed that people like it - it's awesome that more people are...kind of sort of liking Star Trek. But...I don't like how the movies are being turned into Big Action Movies and missing the philosophical part of the series which was pretty much the main point. *That's* what disappoints me.

tl;dr: I just wish they hadn't seemed to ditch the philosophy part of the series.

"the original actor wasn't indian either"

Yeah, ok, but the character is and, lo and behold, it is 2013 and India has one of the biggest film industries in the world with an incredible pool of actors, I'm sure. So tbh there isn't really an actual excuse that isn't "well in the literal sixties they did this thing so it's cool do it now, fifty literal years later."
Not to mention that the decision to make him Khan at all was done after the casting and they really did a good job totally scrubbing his background and stuff for STID, so like. Why bother doing Khan at all if you're not going to have that have any actual impact on the film's storyline. Histories mysteries.

I work with a guy whose last name is Khan. He looks white.

He must be an aberration.

(Or maybe, just maybe, not everyone from the Middle East looks the way you all apparently think they should. Maybe there are wide variations in skin tone. Maybe there are even people in that part of the world who you would assume to be European at first glance! And maybe, Khan and Singh aren't just Indian names. Maybe the lot of you are yourselves relying on ridiculous stereotypes to support your anger).

(picture of Chekov from Star Trek: Into Darkness)

The truth is, I didn’t want to see this movie

I love Trek, but the fandom has gotten way too crazy for me lately

They didn’t have to make BenBatch Khan, which is true, but the original actor wasn’t Indian, either!

TBH, the mishandling odd ALL the characters has my hackles up

S!B I’m a known Trekkie IRL & online, plus I like Benedict Cumberbatch.
This film was supposed to be chocolate in my peanut butter. Instead, I’m disappointed in everyone, everywhere.

(off to the side) lol- paint seekrit

you are not alone in your dissapoint. My friends and I agree that the movie isn't terrible as a general movie, but is not made for star trek nerds, and in fact just enrages most of us with the horrible mischaracterizations and hollywood generic action film plot line.
