what books are you reading?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-06-15 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I am heading to the big library in town to find some books. What are you all reading or what are some of your favorites?

I think I am gong to see if they have House of Leaves. I might all get some books to reread from my favorite author Robert Cormier. The Chocolate War and After the First Death are my favorites.

I'm currently reading a lot of James Blaylock books. They're really good! I like them a lot. He's a good writer. I'm not sure I can put my finger on why I like them so much, but there's just something really satisfying about his writing. I like the characters and I really like the way that he integrates fantastic elements into the setting - he does it in a way that makes it seem unspectacular, kind of, and I think it works well.

I'm also reading some other stuff but I am too lazy to type it out mostly.

I got a Kindle fairly recently, and downloaded some of their free older (read: public domain) books like Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Picture of Dorian Gray. I'm currently reading The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

The last book(s) that I read was Qiu Xiaolong's Inspector Chen series and Carola Dunn's Sheer Folly is waiting next on the bookshelf. Terry Pratchett is my all time favorite author and I reread his books quite often.

I'm trying to work my way through Watchmen. I keep hearing what an awesome graphic novel it is, but for some reason I can't get into it.

I've just finished Wolfsangel by M. D. Lachlan, and now I'm reading The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson and The Broken Kingdoms by M. K. Jemisin. After that, I'll be starting The Air War by Adrian Tchaikovsky and House of Chains by Steven Erikson!

Rereading Discworld and when I get to buy more books, it'll probably be more Discworld.

I bought Beowulf in comic form a while back and still haven't read it, though. I'm going on a long journey today to attend a wedding, so maybe I'll bring it along and read it during the trip.

Not reading anything currently, but planning to dive into the GoT series next week :D
tbh this decision was in no small part motivated by the fascinating wank I've seen on F!S, though tumblr had its contribution as well.

I'm rereading Song of Achilles. The first time I read it I was weirded out a bit because I didn't expect the author to go full-on with the mythological aspects of the story, but since I was expecting it this time I'm enjoying it more.

I'm reading 'Any Duchess Will Do' by Tessa Dare. It's a romance book and the cover looks like any other silly romance book, but....it's hilarious. The characters are good, decent people, the dialogue is well-written and funny, and the leads are clearly meant for one another.

I don't normally read romance, but this is worth checking out.

I'm also reading Shelby Foote's Civil War Trilogy. That's a long one and I have to take breaks from it.

Still reading through ASoiAF, I was ahead of the TV show but I think they've caught up to me so I must finish that.

LoTR and the Hobbit will always be on my favourite list, possibly the Drizzt Do Urden and the War of the Spider Queen series as well.

I'm currently reading Irvin D. Yalom's "Love Executioner and Other Tales of Psychotherapy". It's really, really good.

Summary: The collection of ten absorbing tales by master psychotherapist Irvin D. Yalom uncovers the mysteries, frustrations, pathos, and humor at the heart of the therapeutic encounter. In recounting his patients' dilemmas, Yalom not only gives us a rare and enthralling glimpse into their personal desires and motivations but also tells us his own story as he struggles to reconcile his all-too human responses with his sensibility as a psychiatrist. Not since Freud has an author done so much to clarify what goes on between a psychotherapist and a patient.

I am currently reading a book called The Venetian Betrayal that I saved years ago when a coworker was planning to throw it away. I didn't like it at first because it isn't my usual kind of book but boy does it suck you in! I'm in precisely the mood for short chapters and multiple POVs right now.

Very Important Question! Is anyone familiar with Great North Road by Peter F Hamilton? If so, would you recommend it? I bought it for my dad for Father's Day and am now second guessing my choice.

I just cracked open Blood Meridian, which has been on my shelf for months.

(In regards to House of Leaves - it's one of those books where it's either the most mindblowing thing you've ever read of a waste of time.)
