Stupid slightly OT question

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
What makes a bland hero and what makes a deep one? Sorry for asking but I'm really curious and a bit worried that people will think a hero in a story I'm working on is "bland".

I always thought she was too perfect without a real weakness. Also she seems so... nice. Like super nice without real anger. Even her fights with her brother are more acting than real anger or something similar.

Ahhh right. It seems like some authors are too afraid that giving their characters genuinly flawed moments and moments where they're not nice for fear that they'll be unlikeable.

I used to be that way myself so that's why I suspect it...but then I took an honest look at myself and thought"well by that defintion I would certainly be unlikeable. Because I say mean things....do dumb shit and just mess up plenty". And that sorta made me loosen up with my characters. Now....well now I try to give each of my protagonists at least one "what the hell , hero" moments. XD. Dunno if that's a good thing or not....

she got terrible grades at school (except for sports)

she was too easy to tease

she was naive

okay she was a real sweetie, sorry, ran out of flaws

Hnnn......that's a start but honestly if I were critiquing it as a story....I would probably suggest more. (I usually put in at least 9) .

But eh that's what works for me. I just think 3 is a little light. Also naivite is a tough thing to pass as a flaw because well...it has to actually cause trouble. If it doesn't do anything bad for her...it just sounds a lot like "too nice" or "too innocent".

That said my memories of CCS are pretty good and I remember liking it so...*shrug*. Different tastes.

Well, she has to give up her adventures and magic to be a girlfriend.

Then there's her awful character in TC.

Eeeek that is troublesome. I'm personally still waiting for more series' that portray girls being in a relationship with a boy / getting married a viable choice where the girl keeps her indepedance and doesn't act like either person is below the other in 'status' in any way.

Like maybe showing both sides having to make little sacrifices but not sacrificing their 'dream' or something they are really passionate about...yanno?

I just want to see more stories where romance is just...two people being awesome and just happening to be in an interpersonal relationship. Not "the girl has to give up everything to 'deserve' the boy" or. "The girl is helpless and needs to be always defended by the guy and 'taken care of by them". I actually don't mind seeing a guy defend a girl AS LONG AS she finds a way to pay him back in kind by defending him or fighting for him.

.....sorry this turned into an OT ramble about relationships and feminism.

Well, it's Clamp, so...yeah. I hated that she had to give up everything just to date him. There was no good reason for it. And then they make her this bland, helpless princess in Chronicles, and her boyfriend has to save her. And EH.

Most guys think being loved is more than enough. And fighting and defending isn't always via swords etc., like retards seem to think because lol swerds are kool.

I thought about that question after I made the secret, and what makes Sakura bland to me isn't all her character, but also the plot and length of the series she's in. She has flaws, but they don't cause her any significant conflict in her life or Card Captor work. That would be fine in a movie or much shorter series, but for one of CCS's length, it gets incredibly static. I wanted character development.

The only thing that could make up for that, I think, would be having a personality that's amusing or unique, where the entertainment value of just watching her be herself makes up for the lack of character development. I know that's vague and more subjective than the first point, and I suppose Sakura fits the mold for it in some fans' opinions, but she's way too "normal" for me.

And still, me finding a hero bland while still enjoying the work despite that is rare, so I think I'm might be more lenient with my criteria than most people.

Hnnnn well normally characters not suffering for their flaws is a Sue qualifier for me. It sounds rather frustrating but I would probably give it a pass if the character was otherwise pleasant and just think "what a boring character".

I suppose if other characters were engaging it would be allright but it really seems rather frustrating.

/ just my two cents

I think I get what you mean. Have you tried Fruits Basket? It is the only series where the adorably nice sweetie genki lead has actual layers and depth enough to make me like her. In shojo media, the heroine is meant to b the stand-in for the reader so they are often times just walking cardboards of what girls are told to and thus inspire to be. Some series do give more depth or deconstruct the idea (Sailormoon has more realistic personality, Tohru in FB is far more complex. Other shows like Ouran try to make a different heroine but I think she isn't as unique as the creators wanted. Utena is a deconstruct of the ideal in a great way.)
