I felt that way after watching the anime. Try reading the manga? I do agree that the other characters feel more interesting. I also feel that the series focused on everyone's feelings over Sakura way too much, so she felt a bit "shoved in your face" most of the time.

(Yes, yes, I know titular character and all but still. I feel this way about some of Clamp's manga too).

I don't always like the optimistic hero type, but Sakura just works for me, I'm not sure why. I think it's because she's genuine and doesn't fall into certain tropes that bug me, I don't know, she's just cute?

I wouldn't argue that she's the most interesting character ever, but the overall CCS plot makes up for whatever she lacks.

same here!

I remember thinking "damn, this girl is too nice and perfect", but hers was an honest kind of sweetness, and then the series in general was sweet, so she ended up not standing out so much in that aspect

also, she wasn't too proud to rely on her friends or speak about what bothered her, like so many other children and teenager protagonists did (which drove me nuts; my goodness, just talk!), she was brave in a convincing way, and she loved nearly everyone so dearly and sincerely, I ended up loving her too in the end despite my misgivings

[Picture is the cast from the anime "Cardcaptor Sakura", showing Sakura (the middle-school-aged heroine), Tomoyo (Sakura's best friend), Lee Syaoran (Sakura's rival), Yukito (Sakura's high-school-aged crush) and Toya (Sakura's older brother and possibly boyfriend of Yukito).]

The only thing I don't like about Card Captor Sakura is Sakura. Her personality is as generic as white bread. I can not understand why she's such a favorite with the fans. Sure, she's the heroine, but that only makes her blandness worse because it's on screen as much as she is. All the other characters are ten times more fun and interesting.

Bonus secret: I want to like her. If she were a real person, I'd think she was a great, sweet and strong little girl. But she just makes an almost unbearably boring character.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I also didn't like her in the manga. Also I kinda started to hate her after Tsubasa...

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
CLAMP just royally fucked things up with Tsubasa.

Stupid slightly OT question

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
What makes a bland hero and what makes a deep one? Sorry for asking but I'm really curious and a bit worried that people will think a hero in a story I'm working on is "bland".

I always thought she was too perfect without a real weakness. Also she seems so... nice. Like super nice without real anger. Even her fights with her brother are more acting than real anger or something similar.

Bland characters, especially those who are supposed to be the main characters, are often fan favorites BECAUSE they're bland. Their blandness allows people to insert their own ideas into the character without significant canon interference. They're basically placeholders for self-inserts.

That being said, it's been a while since I've seen the anime (or read snippets of the manga) but I don't recall thinking of Sakura as bland. Perhaps just not super-exciting as a heroine. It didn't really bother me though, I had the other characters to fan over :p.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I think her blandness is intentional. In the manga there are so many different conflicts going on, so many different personalities clashing and there's some moral exploration, and Sakura is just the excuse. She's like glasses: helps you see what you need to see, but is transparent enough to not get in the way.

it's pretty normal for the protagonist to be the blandest member of the cast though, especially in kids' series. They're your POV usually-- they have to have universally "good" qualities so everyone knows they're the good guy, and they can't be too far off-center so no one is alienated. Sakura is really cute IMO, but luckily CCS is overflowing with a million other amazing characters.

Man I miss this series! I wish there was somewhere to watch the anime online in decent quality.

Loved Sakura & everyone in this series... except Yukito.

It was irrational, but God I just couldn't fucking stand him. I wanted him to be Yue all the time.

Oh man, Cardcaptor Sakura! First show me and my best friend ever bonded over when we were 9 years old, even if it was the terrible Cardcaptors dub. And we've been friends for 13 years now.

Anyways, my happy nostalgia shoved off to the side, I think the reason she's bland is because when you're a kid, aside from any great traumas happening that spoil your childhood, you tend to generally be very sweet and happy. Any conflict, at leas the small ones, you get over very quickly or brush off. While Sakura did face a lot of things in the series, most of them revolved around the Cards. After she had sealed each card, the major conflict was over, and she could just move on and stay her positive, peppy little self. The most major things that didn't resolved quickly were her mother not being around, which they did explore a little, and Yukito not returning her feelings.

Welcome to CLAMP.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, interesting thought. I love Sakura. She didn't seem like white bread to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's important to take into account the audience CLAMP were writing for when they were doing CCS, as well as the extent to which they were accountable to the manga publisher and anime producer. CCS was originally published in Nakayoshi, a very popular and well-established monthly magazine aimed at kids in late elementary and junior high school. When the anime was aired, it was very, very popular with kids even younger and was aired on freakin' NHK, probably the most conservative network in Japan. For both Nakayoshi, a magazine with a very long history, and NHK, I imagine it was important for CLAMP to have a heroine that would not only appeal to the target audience, but would also fall in line with the traditional values of Nakayoshi/NHK (and, by extension, Japanese society as a whole). Sakura is someone who is cheerful, able to get along with peers, and always trying to do her best - all of which are perceived as "ideal" characteristics in a young girl/woman. I think CLAMP did what they could in terms of giving her faults, but had to work within a limited range of "acceptable faults."

I really like Sakura, both in CCS and Tsubasa. (I also love CLAMP in general.)

I like her because of the reasons you said - she's great, sweet and strong. I liked her when I was a kid and still like her nowadays. I don't think she's a bland character, although I can sort of see where you're coming from OP - CCS is overall a very sweet series (it is for kids) and Sakura doesn't have a 'dark past' or anything of the sort. But still, I think she's a good heroine.

I don't always like happy-go-lucky, cheerful heroines (for example, I hated Amu of Shugo Chara!), but with Sakura it's different. It's hard to explain.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, after all it's a series for younger audiences.
Positive, nearly flawless main character is pretty common and not unusual, even though it might felt bland for older audiences. (YMMV, I loved CCS like mad when I was 10, but it holds no interest for me now besides being a childhood memory).

I rewatched it about three weeks ago and wow, I didn't have much patience left for it. I only kept watching for Touya/Yukito/Yue.

I've always loved Sakura and never found her boring at all. She was sweet, brave, good-hearted, loyal, a heroine through and through. I wish more western series had main characters like her.

Maybe that's exactly why a lot of fans loved her, especially because many of us watched this as kids. It's kind of like the character who doesn't talk in an RPG - it lets you put more of yourself into them.
