OP, I'm so so sorry you had to put up with that. It's inexcusable for anyone, brony or not, to treat another fan of something they like like that.

But I'd have to agree with you on the "Boy's Club." I too am a female fan of the show, but I don't make this known to anyone aside from other female fans and my own family. The treatment I've seen male fans give to female ones is, for lack of a better word, disgusting. Someone will probably step up and disagree with me, and they've probably had different experiences than me, but the majority of the male/female interaction in this fandom I've seen is negative (just look at a lot of the fandom drama).

I'm not in the MLP fandom and don't know that much about it, but I've heard a lot about how the guys have invaded the fandom and now the series caters to them. If that is true, that is sad.

It's not a silly show, and neither are your feelings about it, OP, it was supposed to empower young girls. There is so little out there for young women and girls it's sad when that is taken away.

And for the girls: don't ever let men like that take anything from you or dictate what you can like. MLP is NOT a boys club and don't let anyone ever let you think it is.

BTW I love MLP too and have the same nostalgia, the new series is beyond cute and I'm always going to love those things.

I'm a female fan of MLP too and unfortunately I do feel kind of left out. I'm not a part of the fandom, but the real life guys I know who are into it are all high fives and references while only a few of them will discuss the show with me. it sucks.

I'm always too afraid to talk to people first because I'm afraid of situations like this... =_=

but one time I was in a store just looking at the pony merchandise and some guy started talking to me about the show in the store. It was kind of fun... but that was the only interaction i've had with the fandom really.

I don't watch MLP, but I've experienced the 'I don't want to talk to a girl about my interests' thing (in my case, gaming) and it sucks. Sadly some people are just dicks, and you're better off finding someone who isn't a total asshole to converse with. You should never have to experience that kind of treatment and it is unfortunate, but I'm sure there are plenty of friendly MLP fans too. I hope you find some to hang out with.

If it makes you feel better, Bronies/Men overtaking FiM and being all "this show about cartoon ponies is my due, no women/girls allowed" is just a symptom, not the cause.

The Asshole McDickheads and Misters "I don't want to alienate my friend by scolding him for his gross and bad behavior" of the world would behave this way over anything that they had latched onto that validated them via other members' feedback loops. Maybe it would be another fandom, maybe it would be an enthusiasm for miniature car collections, maybe even sports or other outdoorsy stuff.

There are non-asshole fans of the show, promise! Sorry you ran into the reprehensible ones. :(

I've been a big fan of My Little Pony since I was a little girl, and I remember the excitement I felt when Friendship is Magic became a hit. At one point, I saw two male classmates discussing it together and I eagerly joined in. One guy gave me this look, and promptly started talking about grimdark fic as if to scare me off. I like grimdark so I started talking about my favorites. He gave me another look and started to talk about clopfic, which is one of my big squicks. I got the hint and left. The other guy looked uncomfortable with all this, but didn't say anything. It made me so upset, but of course I didn't tell anyone - just a silly TV show right? But I had the distinct feeling that a cherished part of my childhood was being turned into a Boy's Club with no girls allowed. I'm sorry if I'm overreacting.

I really hate how bronies have taken over the MLP fandom, and how so many of them act like they're the only kind of fans who matter and that everything about the show and merchandise should pander solely to them. I know that I shouldn't judge the whole brony subculture by its jerkiest members, but sometimes it's really hard not to hate them, partially because of shit like this.

This is one of the reasons why I dropped from the fandom; that and the Derpy Hooves fiasco. I'm a male, but I was astonished to hear what other male fans are doing to the female fans. It all just soured for me.
