Wobblies of F!S unite!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-29 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Based on nursejoy saying she sometimes posts after she gets home from work, and based on some of us responding to "What are you doing for summer break?" with "Working, because I am an adult now, and I suck," I present to you, F!S a thread about WORK. Are you a lifer in your job? Do you want to be? Did you have the opportunity to be, but turned it down?

I was a lifer in the first job I ever landed. And then I got laid off. I had a few different jobs after that which experiences I would not trade for anything. I do think there's no such thing as a "for life" job anymore, not even the traditional ones that always were. The union jobs are few and far between, and Big Labour is almost as bad as the multinationals in a 1980s William Gibson book, now....

Your thoughts, my fellow Workers of the World?

ONE BIG UNION

(actually I have a shitty entry-level job in the marketing department of a tech company right now, it's whatever, i really want to find something else but Who Knows, basically. I feel like I'm pretty lucky just to have a job that pays decently atm)

This next will be my fourteenth year in the profession, and I suspect I'll at least make it to 20 as long as the state legislature doesn't do something really dumb like completely defund the public education system.

Also, my local union spokesperson is not well-spoken at all but OMFG I love the union itself. They protect my rights as an employee and they send out deliciously snarky e-mails every couple of weeks. What's not to like?

Don't jinx it, man. I still have to enter the public school system! :P

OP

I wish my union sent out snarky emails, LOL. I don't mind ours, they are small and local, and not one of the big, hydra-headed ones that are just getting bigger and bigger and bigger (CAW I'm lookin' atchu), though they are/have been pretty toothless in the face of....stuff....happening in the past.

Having worked both public and private sector, I definitely prefer the public sector, and there are definite perks and bonuses that are worth sticking around for. But I am not (always--been a bit down in the dumps lately due to personal/life-outside-work-stuff) one of those "Show up, punch in, do nothing, punch out," govt workers. Plus, I love my job, so that helps motivate me immensely, LOL.

WTF is a lifer?

I guess I could do this job for life, but I won't. I've been here 3 years already, moving on to a new job next year which will hopefully get me into a magical, stable career (as a job where if I do nothing wrong, they cannot get rid of me. Just...put me somewhere else. score)

Your fellow worker of the world has no understanding of what Big Labour is, has never personally experienced a union and is ??? at this thread. I can complain about work? because I do hate this menial job but hey, money.

Re: Wobblies of F!S unite!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Lifer = you have a permament job with one company/agency that you expect to retire from.

Big Labour (think Big Pharma, Big Data, etc.) refers to the shenanigans the (for example) Canadian Autoworkers' Union has been pulling, i.e., looking to absorb smaller unions that protect employees who not only are NOT "autoworkers" they are not ever going to BE autoworkers...and yet they will be, if CAW gets its way, in the autoworkers' uniion.

IOW, instead of specific unions existing to protect specific employees, in specific contexts (information workers are completely different from autoworkers, but CAW wants to absorb them as well), there will be, as the anon somewhere above me points out, ONE BIG UNION (reminiscent of the "Workers of the World = Wobblies" that I referenced in my OP -- it was a movement in the 1930s that was doomed from the start) that essentially won't protect anyone or anything, but its own interests.

Which is exactly the opposite of what a labour union is supposed to do.

Re: Wobblies of F!S unite!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
ONE BIG UNION was, I believe, an actual Wobblie slogan.

And I think there's a place for that approach. I think the Wobblie idea had a lot going for it. Although I definitely don't know if existing organizations eating smaller unions is the way to go about it, there's a lot to be said for cooperation and working together between unions across different industries, between labor in all fields.

Re: Wobblies of F!S unite!

OP

IA, to a certain extent, but I would rather behemoths like CAW do more cooperating and less coopting. But that's just my own bone to pick. Having worked in a variety of professions also leads me to think that ONE BIG UNION could not possibly address the very unique situations that crop up in individual workplaces...I mean, even within one of the smaller unions, you can run into trouble as an employee, if there are problems in your particular shop/with your particular shop steward! (Which I have never had, but I am both lucky and happy with the union support that I have had.)

Supersizing that just sounds like a bad idea just waiting to happen, IMO. Plus the Wobblies were, IIRC, very violent. Not something I want to see CAW advocating, ever, but I would not put it past them, just because of the sheer numbers they are trying to amass under one umbrella.

Re: Wobblies of F!S unite!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-30 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that there are things smaller unions are able to do that larger ones might not be able to address; I think it's just a trade-off, you know? You're never going to have something that's totally perfect, and if there are advantages to a smaller union in its ability to address specific grievances, there are also advantages to size.

Plus the Wobblies were, IIRC, very violent. Not something I want to see CAW advocating, ever, but I would not put it past them, just because of the sheer numbers they are trying to amass under one umbrella.

Wellll I think it's probably best to leave aside there to avoid getting into arguments outside the scope of the thread.

Confusing. :/

Well, I should be a lifer. My next job is in the public service, so I do intend to retire from it. Might hop around on the particular job, but do hope to stick there.

Not to be a buzzkill. But I have two words for you: Austerity measures. If you're entering a public service that is currently being run by conservatives, you may very well be out of luck at sticking there. But lots of luck, anyway, nonnie!

Not American or European - we have had those (that?) ruled out since WW2, the area I'm going in will be (should be) pretty secure and unaffected despite who's in charge. If it does change I would be shuffled off to a different sector but not be out a job. (hence why going into public service. Security~~~ Provided I pass probation :X)

Thanks! I'm a little nervous considering politics of late, but my future boss called me up to make sure I hadn't changed my mind -so that's hopefully a good sign

I just got a full time job. Given that I had to move seven hours away from home to take it, I hope to stay here for a good, long while.

I wouldn't say I'm a lifer by any means, but I do intend on sticking it out in my field for life. I don't want to stay with my current company (they're too small and no room for growth) but it's been great experience.

I definitely want to move on to something else in my chosen field, but honestly who knows. I'm pretty passionate about a lot of things and if it meant switching careers then so be it.

Dear god I hope not. My jobs are kind of mundane and not the best-paying, so being a lifer would suck.

I probably could have been a lifer at one place I quit from a few years ago. But I didn't get along with most of the staff and I nearly walked off the job a number of times before actually quitting. If they weren't so grossly understaffed, they would have eventually found a reason to fire me.

Lesson learned: never work with a bunch of cranky old ladies.

BARELY EMPLOYED AT ALL

[personal profile] tyger66 2013-07-30 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I work on the weekends giving out free samples at Super Target. It's contract work, which is perfect for going to college. Also, it can get hilarious, as all my coworkers are women over 80, and my days often play out like a geriatric Mean Girls skit.

I did not know there were Super Targets. Huh. Are they just like really huge Target stores? Or are they like Super Walmarts and include a whole grocery store in them?

They're pretty much exactly like Super Walmarts.

Just started a part-time job at a huge retailer. Everything's fine, but I can't see myself working here for more than a year, to be honest. And then I'm going to have to get a job in something where I definitely won't be there for that long.

I want to work in the film/tv industry (ideally as a production manager, but I'm flexible about my goals) so I'm basically trying to earn enough money to move to California and try to get an entry-level position somewhere.

I just wanted to fist bump you on the production manager thing, because that is my goal too! (or just getting a P.hD and going into teaching) as long as I don't have to constantly write film reviews (?) for newspapers I will be okay tbh.

Good luck on your career! I am sure you will make it!

Very cool! The good news is, according to my professor for my production classes, Production Managers are pretty in demand in comparison to other fields (directors, director of photography, editing, etc), so hopefully we both make it!

I'd be cool with writing reviews, and I run a couple of blogs, so that's something I've thought about. Teaching would be cool, though.

Good luck to you as well!

I wish.

I am part time right now in a job that pays well when I do have work, but has a schedule of like 3 weeks of work, then 3 weeks nothing, and then "hey can you come in again" for another 3 weeks, and then this whole past month and half was nothing because they said there was supposed to be a project, but it got delayed. Everything's all lined up for me to go in again this Wednesday, so fingers crossed.

But the thing is, it pays more even with the breaks than a minimum wage job would, so I'm sort of stuck on their string until I find an actual fulltime job in my field.

And then on the side I'm an unpaid intern for 10-15 hours a week in the hopes that that leads somewhere.

The economy! Fuck yeah!
