07. [SPOILERS for Degrassi]

I find it hard to feel sorry for anyone stupid enough to text and drive.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh hey cool, we're doing that thing where we judge whether people deserve to die for trivial offenses again!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
They didn't say they deserved it. They said they didn't feel sorry for them. And why should you? Texting while driving can be as dangerous as driving drunk.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I am just going to say that I have never understood how people say that someone's death isn't worth feeling sorry about, and castigate them for doing the things that led to their death, while also saying that you 'don't think they deserved to die'

i have never understood that distinction at all

You know, normally I'd be with you -- I hate when people say someone "deserves to die" -- but texting while driving is hardly a "trivial offense". It's just as bad as driving while drunk (hell, perhaps even worse, since the people texting are sober and know exactly what they are doing).

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It's not only yourself you're endangering, it's everyone else who's on the road with you. That is absolutely not trivial.

If they only injure themselves then, yeah, I might feel sympathetic for them and hope they would take it as a harsh lesson learned. If they injure or kill innocent people because they couldn't put down their goddamn phone then I feel zero pity.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
And you're doing the "excusing and enabling dangerous idiot behaviour that could kill not only the idiot but someone else" faux-morally superior stupidity. NOT a "trivial offence".

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
On behalf of the parents in my town whose kid was killed by a driving texter, FUCK YOU.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I do feel sorry for them, but I can feel sorry for practically anyone if I put my mind to it.

I'm also pissed as hell, because they are gambling with their own lives, their passengers' lives, and the lives of every driver, passenger, pedestrian, cyclist, road worker, and anything else they go anywhere near.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
This. My cousin is dead thanks to an asshole who thought it was ok to text and drive. THey swerved onto the wrong side of the road and hit her car head-on. The texter walked away with minor injuries, and my cousin never made it to the hospital.

So fuck anyone who texts and drives. Fuck them to hell.

was Unique even transgender in Glee tho? like, it seemed like they kept flip flopping between wanting him (her?) to be trans or to be just a cross dresser. and they constantly called her (him?) "he" which...doesn't really make them all that great on the whole "portraying trans* youth" front. I thought Degrassi actually did a surprisingly good job with Adam and as someone who is FtM, I could really relate to his character. Until they gave him the Becky storyline and turned him into an idiot anyway. All their characters turn into morons when they get in relationships.

But yeah, it sucks that his actor left the show so they decided to be topical and kill him off with a texting and driving plot line. Whatever.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Unique has said she's a woman.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't mean that the show didn't have contradictions.

Yeahhhh, there were several things that bothered me about Unique's storyline. It was disappointing. But then I guess I shouldn't have expected anything more considering that Ryan Murphy apparently can't even handle the concept of bisexuality.

Brittany is bisexual, though?

she said in-show that she is female but the rest of the characters still constantly referred to her as male (of course I stopped watching glee a while ago so this could have changed). I think degrassi did better on that front

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if you've seen all of Glee (if you haven't then I honestly can't blame you) but their portrayal of Unique got better as time went on. I still prefer Adam though, honestly.

SPOILERS for last season of Glee.

The did flip-flop, but in the latest few episodes, with Unique pretending to be that other girl with the catfish thing, it seemed to me they were pretty much going for the genuinely transgender thing, and wanting to be accepted as a girl. Also there was that one-liner about her popping birth control pills to get breasts.

ayrt

I dropped Glee after the first episode of season 4 (not really because of the Unique thing, but because of...everything else) so that's nice to here. I kind of assumed they wouldn't really progress with her storyline much because it's, well, Glee but I'm impressed that they did. Glee, I take back some of the horrible things I've said about you. Some of them.

spoilers for Degrassi

[Picture is three screen-captures from the TV show "Glee"? The first one has a woman checking her cellphone while she drives a car. She has light olive skin, blonde hair reaching her jaw and brushing her shoulders, a pink blouse and a white three-quarters sleeve sweater. The second one has a woman singing on-stage. She has somewhat dark skin, black hair in layers reaching just before her jaw and is wearing a green-blue dress, a light-colored necklace and one white glove in one hand. With the other, she is holding a microphone to her mouth. There are pictures of snowflakes on the background. The last one is a person, possibly male, looking bloodied and hurt in a hospital bed. He has light skin and short dark hair. he has a breathing? tube going inside his mouth, and some gauzes around his head. He is covered up to his chin with blankets and there is a soft white pillow beneath his head. He seems unconscious or asleep.]

I think Glee handled the issues of texting while driving and of transgender youth better than Degrassi did.
