Insight would be nice...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anybody here know why a store that's understaffed and has open positions would refuse to keep on a temporary employee who has worked hard for six months, got a lot of positive customer comments, is well-liked by their coworkers, and is willing to fill any open position?

Because that's the conundrum I'm facing right now, and they didn't even tell me why they're not keeping me, so I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, and it just makes me feel like I'm never going to be able to keep a long-term job if I'm not even being considered for a part-time cashiering position (that I'm already trained for and would be happy to take).

Financial bullshit, probably.

But it costs them more to hire and train new people than it does to keep somebody, and it's not like they didn't keep anybody they hired on for the season - they kept all the cashiers that wanted to stay on. (I was an on-the-floor department associate.)

I wasn't even asking for a raise or anything. I just wanted to stay at the store because it was at least some income, and I already knew and liked most everyone there.

Financial bullshit can take on all kinds of forms, many of which have nothing to do with you. It could be a tax thing, it could be a regulation thing, heck--depending on the kind of job you have--it could be a union thing. It sucks, but sometimes businesses can't hire people who deserve a job for reasons that have nothing to do with what the business or that person wants.

Where I worked for a couple years, they didn't keep temps on. But if they were good workers, after the tempt period was up and they were let go, they could be re-hired for a part-time position. The being let go, and then hired back in the part-time position was some bureaucratic bullshit of some kind.

Re: Insight would be nice...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's how it worked there - all the temps that were hired on for the season had to put in for a permanent position if they wanted to stay, and then had to go through the interview process and everything again. We were told when we started that many temps moved on to part-time permanent positions, and that they preferred doing that over hiring new people, because it costs them money to hire and train new people.

And I went through that whole process. But I was told that I wasn't being considered for any open position. The store manager told me that they were "considering other candidates," and when I asked the HR manager to see about being considered for anything else, because I liked it there, I got the same answer.

It's because you touch yourself at night. They know about that. We all know about that.

Shows what you know - I do it during the day, too.

But not at work. Because I'm not a disgusting heathen.

Maybe they don't want you because you don't touch yourself at work? You don't fit in with the Secret Workplace Masturbation Clique. :D

No wonder the breakroom smelled a little funky...

Re: Insight would be nice...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll be blunt, it's because they didn't need you. Now, that doesn't mean you're an awful worker and it's your fault. It means that companies. especially large ones like walmart and Target, etc, will hire very few people and expect them to do the work of ten people. (Oh god, Target is really guilty of this. Zone departments a-g with only two other people in three hours, oh and backup cashier, and work the electronics booth, and handle customer calls) They make more money that way. And right now, there is low demand for customer service workers, and a huge surplus of people who can only do customer service. Oh, and sometimes certain benefits kick in after a certain amount of time. If they let you go before that, they won't have to give you any.

I'm sorry that you're being let go, though. I hope things work out okay for you!

Re: Insight would be nice...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I totally get this - I know they want to keep as few workers as possible. And if they weren't in the process of hiring more people, and if the HR manager hadn't complained the day before that we had more positions open than we had applicants, I would totally understand. I know I was a seasonal temp for the busy summer season. I knew they were going to be cutting back on hours when that was up. But what I don't get is why they're choosing to go through the hiring process with new strangers instead of keeping on an already-trained employee that they know does good work.

Additionally, while they do give part-time benefits, they would still be "firing" and "re-hiring" me to move me from temp to permanent, so there would still probably be a waiting period for benefits, regardless of how long I've already worked for them. And they kept on a bunch of other temps - mostly cashiers and day-stockers. That's why I'm feeling like this is more personal than just standard business practice.

I'm in the process of firing someone right now and it irks me bad. She's invested in her work, she's knowledgeable and sweet to the customers. But she's been repeatedly lying to me about minor errors she's done, explaining them away and blaming circumstances and other people. What makes it even worse is that, to my knowledge, it's small stuff that happens to most people and could easily have been solved. Even caught red-handed and been given better options she keeps lying. I can't give her more chances and I don't trust her anymore. She obviously don't get how easy it is to see through all her little lies and schemes. What a waste.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
if it is small irrelevant stuff, and she is doing the big stuff right, then you are an idiot for firing her.

Remember, don't sweat the small stuff.

DA

...Did you ignore the 'caught red-handed and still lying' bit? If they're doing that - on any level - it's enough for some employer's to let them go.

Re: Insight would be nice...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Lying about irrelevant crap is still irrelevant. Making superficial mistakes which the OP admits are not worth worrying about are also mistakes not worth worrying about.

SA Did you notice the "blaming other people" part? That's not minor to me, even if the original error was, that's dead serious. I'm actually letting her off easy in that regard. I guess she's just immature, but when laying down the line doesn't work, I don't feel like I have other options. I have a responsibility to my other employees too.

Re: Insight would be nice...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
An employee you cannot trust who refuses to take personal responsibility for even minor mistakes is not "small stuff" and I'm side-eyeing you for saying it is.

Re: Insight would be nice...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Did you tell her that this was a problem?

I mean, I don't think this is me - I do make mistakes and I sometimes get a little wishy-washy about fessing up, but I've never blamed somebody else, and I do try to fix things. At the beginning, I was told to make some adjustments to certain customer service aspects - which I took seriously and the issues were never brought up again. To my knowledge, I haven't done anything wrong - and if I have, I'd really like to know what that is. I'd be far more okay with, "We're not keeping you because x, y, z..." than I am with, "We're just not keeping you. Bye."

It really sucks to lose a job and not have any idea why. If I don't know what I'm doing wrong, how can I hope to get better?

Re: Insight would be nice...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
SA I'm not pointing at OP here, no (if that's you).

I've never told her outright that I hate that she's lying me straight in the face, but I have told her repeatedly that her petty excuses are factually wrong (also with blaming others, which is a straight up scrape on her record, no mistaking that), yet she just keeps it up. So even if I planned for a more long term employment for her, she's not getting her contract renewed here.

I don't really feel that I owe her more at this point. But if she asks, I'll tell her. I'm glad she hasn't asked me for a recommendation letter though.

Treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen.

Basically.

If they keep dangling a possible permanent position in front of you, they ensure you'll work harder to try and prove you are worth it. Give you a permanent position and they think you'll not work as hard as you are not as keen.

Re: Insight would be nice...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a flaw in this logic: my last day was yesterday. They no longer have me working for them at all. They're not dangling anything in front of me now because they've shut the door, and yet they're keeping people on that others are fed up with because those people don't work as hard.

Corporate logic has never had a one-to-one match up with real logic.

If it's anything like my ex-boss, you're not cute or black enough (seriously, all of his female staff but me was a young African American, with big boobs and a pretty face). Too bad most of them had absolutely horrible personalities, unless they were sucking up to him.

I think they have all of two black guys working for them - not because of any discrimination, I'm pretty sure, but just because this state and this area is really fucking white.

Maybe if I'd been up-front about being trans they would've kept me - they kept the other trans guy who's mid-transition and still mostly mistaken for a girl. I didn't say anything about it because I'm pre-everything and desperate enough for a job to just suck it up and deal since I didn't know what their non-discrimination policy covered. The other guy had to because he was in the middle of getting his documents switched over, so. Sort of obvious.
