What's the story behind your username?

[personal profile] souljelly 2013-09-17 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I'm curious.

Not much, really. I needed a username for a Neopets fan forum, and I was a fan of Vira the Acara (the lady in my icon, which was made for me by a member of said forum), so I came up with a name that sounded a little like "Vira" but different. It was the first real online handle I'd ever had, and it sounded pretty cool, so I stuck with it thereafter. yes boring

My name is Zach, so I went by Z-man on message boards for awhile. Then there was a forum RP where we chose the superpowers of various fictional characters and modified the names so we knew when we were talking about the characters from that. I chose the Archmage from Gargoyles, so I was Z-Mage.

When that message board moved to a place where my name was already taken, I decided to go with Z-Mage. And when I registered for AIM, hyphens weren't allowed, so it became TheZMage. It's distinctive and never used, so it became my new default username, barring a few brief forays into more fandom-specific names. I'm glad they never caught on because I am not really as interested in those fandoms anymore.

When people in real life ask, I just say "it's a long story, but not an interesting one."

A pretty painting I saw once. It was really expensive and I could never buy it. The painter had a fascinating story. I never did see that painting again.

What about you?

Edit: The painting was of a beautiful jester. She looked discontent and maybe a bit bored but was choosing between two different emotive masks. The colors and lines were absolutely exquisite.

The painter's story was that he was not allowed to paint in his home country because they found his art subversive. When moving to a new country he had his fingers broken by his government to he couldn't paint again. He relearned to paint and made many beautiful works.

Needed a username, looked at my shelf of movies. Saw Dogma. First thought:

"NO, I was AN ARTIST, STUPID! A muse has no place in battle!"
"So you were *~an artist~*, big deal! Elvis was an artist, but that didn't stop him from serving his country in a time of war. That's why he's The King, and you're a schmuck."

And sure, Azrael may not have been *the best* influence for a name, but I didn't really feel like mulling over all my options for an eternity. Plus, I really like this Jason Lee photo.

I was fifteen/sixteenish and working on both a fanfic and a school assignment where I had to write what basically amounted to a To Kill a Mockingbird fanfic. I did both of these things at night, and being the dork that I was, decided "Author By Night" sounded, like, so edgy.

As I hit my late twenties, it's painfully dorky and not at all edgy anymore, but it's also stuck as my fandom name. Fandom: Where I embrace my inner teenager. Yeah huh!

In middle school, I did some research on sporks because I thought they were pretty cool and found out were called spoon-forks. Couldn't think of anything more meaningful, so went with that for a while and got some cool nicknames from that. Spork is usually taken, so I went with sporkly instead.

Edit: I also like how it's not all that serious. Probably the main reason I've stuck with it for so long.

A reference to this guy. Not so obsessed a fan these days, but the name stuck.

I wanted something that was offensive, juvenile, and had an obscure source. I think I hit all three. Cookie to anyone who can name the source.

Mine's...a bit weird. Kallanda comes from one of my exes, it's a contraction of Kappa a Lambda, the initials of my first and middle names. So anyway, my ex called a character in one of his videogames that, loosely after me. "Lee" I take from Jubilation Lee, whom I really liked back in the day.

I love to bake cakes, I would totally be a mage if such a thing existed, and the thought of baking with magic made me happy, as did the idea of a cake that is also a mage.

One of my favorite books of all time is 'The Jungle Books', by Rudyard Kipling. And one of my favorite characters is Tabaqui, the Jackal. This may not seep particularly...complimentary, but this bit of prose about Tabaqui always appealed to me, so, I adopted the name.

It was the jackal--Tabaqui, the Dish-licker--and the wolves of India despise Tabaqui because he runs about making mischief, and telling tales, and eating rags and pieces of leather from the village rubbish-heaps. But they are afraid of him too, because Tabaqui, more than anyone else in the jungle, is apt to go mad, and then he forgets that he was ever afraid of anyone, and runs through the forest biting everything in his way. Even the tiger runs and hides when little Tabaqui goes mad....

I chose my username because I was coming back to a PBeM RPG and the mod wanted my character to be a surprise. My original email addy was too well known so I created this ID based on riddles and mysteries. I've had it since the late 90s.

The RPG folded a couple of years ago, sadly; it was a ST Voyager-era RPG with a completely lesbian crew. Wrote some of the best porn of my life there. Was sorry to see the thing fold.
