I keep seeing this show popping up a lot here. I'm interested. Should I watch it. Why? Why not?

Yes, yes, watch it! And because it's fucking amazing and terrifying and it's already been renewed for a second season (each season will consist only of thirteen episodes instead of the standard 22-24).

Watch it. Its so good

It's kind of silly, but it manages to keep the right balance between not taking itself too seriously and allowing the characters to be very human and have very human relationships. Like, George Washington's Ancient Order to Protect from Evil and whatever, but Abbie's relationship with the Sheriff, and with her sister, are amazingly poignant.

(I wasn't a huge fan of how some stuff developed in the third episode, but otherwise it's pretty solidly great).

Watch it if you love or don't mind half-assed history, creepy/fun supernatural stuff, wackadoodle interpretations of the Book of Revelation, sexy policewomen who have a pretty solid backstory after only three episodes, non-stop time traveling fish out of water gags ("but women wear TROUSERS now?"). Don't watch it if too many of those things annoyed you just reading it.

It's a really, really fun show. It's also a bit goofy and sort of an odd mashup of really typical tropes, but with characters I already adore.

Sounds like it might be my kind of thing, thank you!

You probably will. I think the best part is a)the 'fish out of water' stuff isn't over done or constant, and the female lead (Abbie) is competent, smart, and believably conflicted. Plus, omg, they're both hot as hell.

"How many [Starbucks] are there?"

"Per block?"

"...is there a law?"

It's the delivery, too. I really love the acting in this show.

Yes! He's so low-key, even in the face of all the crazy stuff. Though, him waking up in a hotel-room covered in post-its was brilliant.

I only watched it becaue I was bored and it kept popping up here and I'm completely hooked. The bad guys/monster of the week freak me out SO much and I handle horror really badly (I did not have this kind of problem with Buffy and Supernatural and I don't think that Sleepy Hollows monsters are objectively any more scary than SPN's, but they just get me so much worse), but I still love the show very much so far. The two main characters are great on their own, but together they're amazing.

Plus, I like that Mills doesn't have to work at cross purposes to her fellow police officers to hide what's really going on. There's something freaky going on the town, her boss realises this even if he officially no one admits it and it's now her job to deal with it because the crazy guy with the British accent imprinted on her like a baby duckling.

This. I don't think I'd consciously pinged on it, but I do love that element. I may still be in love with Agent Scully, but "rational" people sucking it up and accepting the evidence that Weird Stuff Is Going Down is one of my favorite things on supernatural shows. It's a big part of why I was so quick to fall in love with The River.

Your last sentence is the most perfect summary of this show imaginable.

Have you ever seen the movies, Warlock (with Julian Sands and Richard E. Grant) and The Prophecy (with Christopher Walken)? If so and you are a fan than watch Sleepy Hollow. It's basically those two movie smooshed together with a sprinkling of Washington Irving, the Illuminati and The Book of Revelation. (And if you haven't seen those movies, I completely recommend them.)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I absolutely adore Warlock! When I saw you compare Sleepy Hollow and that movie, my little fangirl heart just about burst. ^_^.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
So glad I wasn't the only one seeing Redferne parallels! It drove me crazy to find out that he and Kassandra weren't in the Warlock sequels, to the point that I haven't bothered watching them.

This will be slightly spoilery, I apologize.

I quit watching it halfway through the first episode. But then, it had the Kurgan AND they had someone beheaded on holy ground. My Highlander loving brain couldn't take it.

People keep saying Sleep Hollow is scary... but I haven't been scared at all. To me its on the cheesy scary level of early spn... but even less scary.

Why you should watch it: awesome female lead, John Cho, and a man displaced out of time for funny hijinks. The storylines aren't too bad either. It's just a fun show with good characters, and lots of shipping possibilities, if that's your thing.

I know that objectively speaking Sleepy Hollow isn't that scary. Honestly, the monsters are kind of cheesy but hotdamn, that show scares the shit out of me. Like the demon the sisters saw in the woods; I know that it looks ridiculous and when we saw it in the distance I laughed at how ridiculous it was too, because hey! The blurry strangely shaped thing isn't scary at a -- PLEASE DON'T COME CLOSER STAY AWAY GAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!eleventyone11!!

Same with the witch and the Sandman. God, the Sandman was awful for me. It's obvious to me how cheesy the demon designs are, but they still scare the crap out of me way worse than SPN or Buffy. It's like playing Slender for me. (Except for this episode. At least this time I fully got to enjoy the cheesy demon design. *smug*)

My response about not being scared wasn't directed at anyone, I swear! Maybe I should have worded it better? Idk.

I can see why it would be scary tho, cheesy or no cheesy. I think the show is good at mind bending things. Making the horror in the mind is always a nice touch! I'm glad other people are getting a good scare :) that's always fun.

Oh, no no, I didn't think that! I just saw your comment and thought I'd add my two cents. I'm sorry if I came across as aggressive or snippy or something - it's, ugh, five o'clock in the morning for me and I haven't been in bed yet. I should probably get on that instead of making an ass of myself on F!S. :/

Making the horror in the mind is probably exactly why the Sandman scared me so much! I hate that kind of horror. *hides behind pillows*

That mirror scene. I was sitting there thinking 'Sigh, the demon guy is getting less creepy the more detail they show, they'd do better to keep him lurking in the shad- AH!' I don't get truly scared often these days, but I love when something manages to startle me, and him flying at the mirror certainly did that.

Yes, the Sandman was bad. If they'd omitted the seam down the front of his face, maybe it would have worked, but he just looked like he was wearing a sock over his head.

SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED TONIGHT'S.

The fiery pit o' demons was much more well-done, I thought.

I think the mirror scene would have been less nerve-wracking if it hadn't cracked when it came closer. Stupid mirror scene. It's not like it wasn't obvious that something was going to happen but still. It's that sort of blinking in and out of sight/rushing that creeps me out the most.

Yeah? I thought the fiery pit of demons looked more like a slumber party game. "Let's all slip under the blanket and act like we're drunk!" But maybe that's just because the demons didn't scare me and so I could finally appreciate the cheesiness of the designs in full for once. :P

It's fun! It's campy horror that kind of reminds me of late 90s TV shows, if that makes sense. Like Buffy or Charmed or campy fantasy like Xena or Hercules.

Meh. I really wanted to like this show, but it fell flat for me. I watched the first couple of episodes but just could not get into it. I found it too silly and had no interest in the lead characters. But then, I am apparently in the minority in fandom places - lots of folks seem to like it. Give it a shot, I guess. What have you got to lose?
