(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)I think the difference is Bring is obviously a troll 24/7 while sometimes Noodly and Chard will act like decent human beings, then do a 180 into trollville

Ironic coming from me in many ways, but I can see why someone would be frustrated by this sort of thing.

It's one of the reason I don't often admit to having (mild) Aspergers myself. I lived 25 years before I was diagnosed, without having to make excuses for being me. I don't need to use the convenient name given to certain traits I have as an excuse for being me.

(Full disclosure: I do not have Asperger's. I've been tested four times, because authority figures kept thinking I had it, and apparently my parents were willing to throw that much money down the drain.)

On one hand, yes, Assburgers are usually just avoiding going to a doctor because they don't want to be called out on their bullshit.
On the other hand, going to a doctor for ANY medical condition can be quite arduous for Americans. I have great insurance and went to see a doctor for two visits that lasted less than an hour total for a mild asthma issue with no tests or blood draws, and even got two inhalers for free, and I'm still paying hundreds of dollars for that. And that is a PHYSICAL issue, things related to neurological disorders and mental health are notoriously hard to get help for.
I've considered trying to get tested for Autism, so that my mother and my aspie friends will stop suggesting that I have it when I'm like 80-90% sure I don't, but the only way to get such a test would involving using the family health insurance, and there are enough divisions and issues in my family that having to roll my eyes and tell people to stop making such suggestions on a monthly basis is a lot easier than getting results that the entire family would know about, whatever those results say. (And the only way I COULD get a test without my family knowing about it...I don't trust their medical confidentiality in other areas, like fuck I'm trusting them with this.) And while assburgers generally don't fall into this category, there are a variety of reasons (besides sex/STD/pregnancy related issues) that people may want to keep medical issues away from their families, and thus don't get any care even if their family has insurance (which isn't always the case, at least for now).

+1 Anon currently testing for a diagnosis
(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 04:31 am (UTC)(link)As someone who was told by a few friends to see a doctor after avoiding them for around 10 years (misdiagnosis of bipolar and feeling like everything people tried to fix about me was 'very off'), I can tell you that now that I'm paying for it out of my own pocket, it's super freaking expensive and I hate that part of it. I am spending $200+ a month, and that's WITH insurance, to see a neurologist, therapist, and psychiatrist/psychologist.
Personally, I find it a relief that the mood swings I have are not me going crazy or something I just can't explain (talking myself in circles is not only frustrating, but has really hurt my friendships and self esteem). I'm very happy to have help in seeing how I can handle the stress in my life and learn better skills. I don't like having to devote so much time or money to it, but I could do without the criticisms over what it's like or whether I actually want to change. There are a lot of people who don't want to, but then there are also ones who do, and not everyone is in the position to afford it. I went to 3 different doctors before I found one I could afford to keep up with, and as a result I'm barely floating above debt. I'm just grateful it's something I'm capable of doing.
Re: +1 Anon currently testing for a diagnosis
I'm just really curious because like I said, I can see bipolar aspects in myself but there's parts that don't fit. My moods are -too- irrational for example, like I don't have long periods of depressions and long periods of mania, I go back and forth in the same day, sometimes within hours.
Re: +1 Anon currently testing for a diagnosis
(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 01:43 am (UTC)(link)Everyone is different, but my doctor told me that a lot of the people he sees were misdiagnosed as bipolar. Right now I'm on anti-anxiety medicine, and that along with learning to recognize that I may not like things, but that I don't have to act on it, has helped me deal a lot. I would try to find someone and get a second opinion if you can, especially if you can find a doctor that specializes in Aspergers. They will know the difference.
