(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)(*I really do mean the ones who diagnose themselves... I know people with actual autism. They may struggle, but they make an actual attempt and if they know they can't handle it they don't put themselves in a situation where it could end that badly. People who act like that at conventions aren't autistic most likely, just socially awkward assholes who refuse to grow up and learn how to deal with people)

Ironic coming from me in many ways, but I can see why someone would be frustrated by this sort of thing.

(Full disclosure: I do not have Asperger's. I've been tested four times, because authority figures kept thinking I had it, and apparently my parents were willing to throw that much money down the drain.)

+1 Anon currently testing for a diagnosis
(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 04:31 am (UTC)(link)As someone who was told by a few friends to see a doctor after avoiding them for around 10 years (misdiagnosis of bipolar and feeling like everything people tried to fix about me was 'very off'), I can tell you that now that I'm paying for it out of my own pocket, it's super freaking expensive and I hate that part of it. I am spending $200+ a month, and that's WITH insurance, to see a neurologist, therapist, and psychiatrist/psychologist.
Personally, I find it a relief that the mood swings I have are not me going crazy or something I just can't explain (talking myself in circles is not only frustrating, but has really hurt my friendships and self esteem). I'm very happy to have help in seeing how I can handle the stress in my life and learn better skills. I don't like having to devote so much time or money to it, but I could do without the criticisms over what it's like or whether I actually want to change. There are a lot of people who don't want to, but then there are also ones who do, and not everyone is in the position to afford it. I went to 3 different doctors before I found one I could afford to keep up with, and as a result I'm barely floating above debt. I'm just grateful it's something I'm capable of doing.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)I really appreciate it when people can separate a diagnosis from people who abuse it. I hate seeing people look at the fakers and decide the whole disorder doesn't exist because they saw some bad examples. I also get mad at the people who abuse the diagnosis because it makes it harder for people who actually suffer from it.
I know I can be selfish when I'm in the moment, or make stupid mistakes but when someone points out what I did wrong I feel awful and try not to do it again.
Also no matter what you have, harassing or hitting people who dress up as characters you hate is unacceptable. There is no excuse for that shit.

(Also, he WOULD feel bad if he knew he was annoying, but I would feel bad for making him feel bad if I pointed it out, so I just sort of let my parents and the counselors and whatnot do their jobs. :P)

Which may be why he always winds up veering off into MLP or Spongebob, actually, now that I think of it. -_-

So while in many ways I wish society could be more tolerant of non-neurotypical behaviour, I get REALLY pissed off by people who think claiming a 'diagnosis' entitles them to a get out of jail free card for being an inconsiderate ass, when not only are they ruining other people's days, they're also making things harder for people like my friends.
