In before some one who diagnosed themselves with Asperger's through WebMD comes in and throws a fit saying you're not allowed to dislike shitty behavior*

(*I really do mean the ones who diagnose themselves... I know people with actual autism. They may struggle, but they make an actual attempt and if they know they can't handle it they don't put themselves in a situation where it could end that badly. People who act like that at conventions aren't autistic most likely, just socially awkward assholes who refuse to grow up and learn how to deal with people)

Do we even have anyone on FS who makes that kind of argument? (I think we have some self-diagnosed Aspies, but I've never seen them be particularly rude about it.)

lol about three or four years ago, we did. That ship sailed long ago, though

If you self diagnosed, then you have assburgers not the diagnosis formerly known as aspergers. I guarantee the self-diagnosed guys are 100% full of shit, and they are being rude to genuine auties by trying to co-opt a very real mental disability as an excuse for being an ass.

jesus fuck what is wrong with you in this thread. you need to breathe.

I think they're a troll. A bit like Noodly, only more offensive.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Generally I find them a lot less offensive than Noodles or Chard.

Bring is being a little rude, but does have a point. I know actual aspies, and people who claim to have Asperger's and try to use it and "play the aspie card" so to speak, and yet only ever use it to act like an asshole and never want to go to an actual doctor if they can.

Ironic coming from me in many ways, but I can see why someone would be frustrated by this sort of thing.

The standard argument I've heard is that getting a diagnosis is really, really freaking expensive.

(Full disclosure: I do not have Asperger's. I've been tested four times, because authority figures kept thinking I had it, and apparently my parents were willing to throw that much money down the drain.)
Edited 2013-10-26 22:31 (UTC)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
And having a diagnosis itself isn't a guarantee either, although it's loads more rare. A few parents will as many people as necessary to get a diagnosis and the autism spectrum diagnoses have really increased in the past decade or so. I know the later could be attributed to multiple things like increased awareness or an actual increase in people who have it, but it's also probable that some people have been misdiagnosed.

The argument is bullshit though, it isn't a hard or expensive diagnosis to get, even for USaliens. It can be really difficult for an Assburger to drag their worthless ass off the couch away from the xbox and down to the doctor. It can be really hard for an assburger to do that because they'd know they probably wouldn't get their get out of being called for being a douche card diagnosis if they did. So I suppose it is just 2HArD!! for them to see a doctor. Also, good for on coming up normal.

+1 Anon currently testing for a diagnosis

(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
*raises a hand*

As someone who was told by a few friends to see a doctor after avoiding them for around 10 years (misdiagnosis of bipolar and feeling like everything people tried to fix about me was 'very off'), I can tell you that now that I'm paying for it out of my own pocket, it's super freaking expensive and I hate that part of it. I am spending $200+ a month, and that's WITH insurance, to see a neurologist, therapist, and psychiatrist/psychologist.

Personally, I find it a relief that the mood swings I have are not me going crazy or something I just can't explain (talking myself in circles is not only frustrating, but has really hurt my friendships and self esteem). I'm very happy to have help in seeing how I can handle the stress in my life and learn better skills. I don't like having to devote so much time or money to it, but I could do without the criticisms over what it's like or whether I actually want to change. There are a lot of people who don't want to, but then there are also ones who do, and not everyone is in the position to afford it. I went to 3 different doctors before I found one I could afford to keep up with, and as a result I'm barely floating above debt. I'm just grateful it's something I'm capable of doing.

well they'll just have to wait until the aca kicks in and there is no excuse for being an asshole

bet there is no upkick in diagnosis though when it does and the assburgers come up with a fresh excuse

+10,000,000

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for making that distinction.

I really appreciate it when people can separate a diagnosis from people who abuse it. I hate seeing people look at the fakers and decide the whole disorder doesn't exist because they saw some bad examples. I also get mad at the people who abuse the diagnosis because it makes it harder for people who actually suffer from it.

I know I can be selfish when I'm in the moment, or make stupid mistakes but when someone points out what I did wrong I feel awful and try not to do it again.

Also no matter what you have, harassing or hitting people who dress up as characters you hate is unacceptable. There is no excuse for that shit.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
well that's exactly it. the shitty behavior and socially awkward bullshit SHOULD NOT be blown off with "I have Asperger's so I can't help it"... it has nothing to do with it. but so many people USE IT like that. that's my point. i hate seeing some one say "this guy is an asshole" in a situation and have that guy say "you're not allowed to say it to me, i can't help it, i'm autistic" - no, bullshit. autism is not a personality.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't excuse it, no, but it makes it more understandable why they're doing it.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
It makes it more understandable, yes. But that doesn't mean they aren't assholes. e.g. Phineas Gage had severe brain injury but that doesn't mean he wasn't a complete and utter asshole to be around after his accident.

Yeah, my brother has been officially diagnosed, and honestly most of the time he irritates the crap out of me. I know he doesn't mean to, it's just that he doesn't know how to have conversations without turning them to anecdotes about My Little Pony or Spongebob, but that doesn't make conversations with him any more enjoyable. :P

(Also, he WOULD feel bad if he knew he was annoying, but I would feel bad for making him feel bad if I pointed it out, so I just sort of let my parents and the counselors and whatnot do their jobs. :P)
(reply from suspended user)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Softly tell him he's being annoying. Not in those exact words, but maybe steer the conversation away from those topics and onto other things.

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2013-10-27 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I try, but the problem is, er, I'm pretty socially inept myself and am really, really bad at trying to direct (or even maintain) a conversation.

Which may be why he always winds up veering off into MLP or Spongebob, actually, now that I think of it. -_-

I have a couple of very good friends who have Aspergers, and by and large have learned (through hard and painful work, and also luck, because they're on the mild end of the spectrum) how to function in mainstream society. They do still screw up interactions, occasionally. They find it upsetting, because they are decent people who don't like hurting others, and because they don't like the feeling that they don't know how to fit in with the way the rest of the world works.

So while in many ways I wish society could be more tolerant of non-neurotypical behaviour, I get REALLY pissed off by people who think claiming a 'diagnosis' entitles them to a get out of jail free card for being an inconsiderate ass, when not only are they ruining other people's days, they're also making things harder for people like my friends.
