What the heck is the New Atheism Movement? :-/ If you don't have a religion and don't believe in supernatural stuff, you're an atheist. I get that atheists have a bad reputation for being assholes or something, but it's the opposition's fault that they're trying to make something that is inherently not a group, into one. Sorry, lol, I'm kind of bitter that atheist has become a bad word, like feminist or something.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's not the opposition's fault that a bunch of atheists are mega shitheads

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Certainly not. But grouping atheists together and saying "atheists are dicks" is even more illogical than grouping, say, Christians together, because at least Christians are a group of people with some core beliefs in common. Atheist means nothing, except no belief in god(s). Atheism is not a religion.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. It's ultimately unfair, yes, in the sense that obviously not all atheists are dicks (and it should be pointed out that in nearly all dialogues about how atheists are dicks, a lot of the people participating are also atheists - it's not like we're unaware of the fact that not all atheists are dicks, being atheists ourselves). But that's what's going to happen when you get a movement of people trying to organize and to take the position of spokespeople for atheism, and those people are shitburgers.

I don't know. It's kind of sucky that these people have become as prominent as they have, but it's not really something that bothers me. Partly that's because the shitty atheists actually are somewhat organized and homogenuous in their views. Really it's more a trick of language than anything else - we say "atheist" when we mean "a part of the subsection of atheists who really sucks" and I kind of feel like most people realize that. I know that's what I mean, and I know that my atheist beliefs aren't implicated in that.

So uh yeah.

Actually when I say "atheist" I mean "atheist." When I say "shitburger" I mean "shitburger." When I say, "Richard Dawkins" I mean "Richard Dawkins." It's not that hard.

I think it's like being an atheist but you also mutter smugly about nonatheists and post pictures about how awesome science is while not bothering to actually understand science under the mistaken assumption that science = atheism. It also means being angry that Reddit took r/atheism off the default list because it got so weird and offensive.

It means thinking The Oatmeal is really great.

Also feminist has only become a bad word among stupid people.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
It means this, and it also means thinking that being religious inherently means that someone is stupid, and that stupidity or cowardice are the only reasons why someone would be religious, and it means refusing to learn anything at all about religion, and it means constantly making belligerent, passive-aggressive comments anytime the topic of religion is even tangentially mentioned, and actively insulting anyone who is religious.

It's really annoying even as an atheist.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Athiest here, and....um, yeah. I used to be *exactly* like this. (Don't forget: thinking that religion is just a crutch and that anyone who is religious is clearly defective in some way and is just using religion to fill in for their own personal failings.) Thankfully, I had some experiences that shoved in my face just how ugly, ignorant and bigoted those attitudes were; but I still wish I could go back in time and smack myself upside the head for my own stupidity.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
as someone who is religious, I just wanted to say thank you for sharing that.

I've had both fellow Christians and atheists tell me that i'm not a real Christian, that i should 'convert' to atheism, etc. because i'm queer.

with the Christians, as much as they anger me, i can understand where they're coming from, because i was there once. but with the atheists - some of whom are queer themselves - that just baffles me. it's like, why the fuck do they care? why should they tell me what to believe?

it's made me wary of both Christians and atheists. but thank you for reminding me that there are many people out there who are not bigoted - but often we don't scream as loudly as the people who are.

"Also feminist has only become a bad word among stupid people."

Shouldn't "atheist" be interchangeable with "feminist" here?
chardmonster: (Default)

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-11-08 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
They're never interchangeable.

But I think I see what you mean. There's a difference between "bad word" and "oh dear this is going to get annoying" and then rolling your eyes.

I have zero problem with atheism, but I'm going to assume that people I barely know bringing it up in casual conversation are going to be really annoying and I'm going to try to get away from them at the party. I feel the same way about people I barely know who really want to make sure I know they're a feminist when, motherfucker, I'm a women's historian and we're all grad students at this party this is what I assumed about you what kind of bullshit are you going to start going on about

Yes.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Wait what did The Oatmeal do that was not-great, or that makes it iffy to think of him as great?

I unfollowed him on Twitter because he made a pedophilia joke about altar boys, and I'm so so so done with people who make those jokes, but I didn't think anyone had made much of a stink about that. I always thought his actual comics were funny so I'm curious.

It's just... stupid. It's pandering bullshit engineered to make people feel smart rather than actually informing them. I'm talking about the comics about Facts, not the comics about his dog.

I don't have footnotes, but I read one cartoon from him that was blatantly anti-feminist, and felt so revolted I just couldn't bring myself to be a fan anymore.

It's a bit like, if you're Australian, Leunig is a beloved cartoonist, and one day he made a cartoon comparing lesbian mothers to Nazis, and I just can't like him any more, I loathe the very sound of his name.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
> Also feminist has only become a bad word among stupid people.

You're doing the exact same thing, ironically.

Literally the only definition of "atheist" is someone who does not believe in a higher power. You're doing the same as the people who think most feminists are "feminazis". You're going off stereotypes and a small-subset of atheists.

I figured one of you would show up eventually.

Tell me: what about what I wrote made you think I dislike atheists or think the majority of atheists are in "New Atheism?"

Humanism meets a fairly strong 'we should not accept the privileged postion religion holds in society' with a view towards encouraging people to discard it, by criticising it's basis from a simple (that's not to say wrong) philosophical perspective.

It's athiests taking all the wrong parts of organized religion and claiming them for themselves.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
err... like what? Genuinely curious and don't understand, could you give some examples?

Insulting proselytizing to those who don't agree with them, insulting shutting down of those who do, but don't agree in just the right way...generally being shitty people and saying it's OK because they're doing Good Work.

My guess would be the new evangelical atheists. The ones that need you to believe the same as they do, or else you're an idiot or whatever else.
