What the heck is the New Atheism Movement? :-/ If you don't have a religion and don't believe in supernatural stuff, you're an atheist. I get that atheists have a bad reputation for being assholes or something, but it's the opposition's fault that they're trying to make something that is inherently not a group, into one. Sorry, lol, I'm kind of bitter that atheist has become a bad word, like feminist or something.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's not the opposition's fault that a bunch of atheists are mega shitheads

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Certainly not. But grouping atheists together and saying "atheists are dicks" is even more illogical than grouping, say, Christians together, because at least Christians are a group of people with some core beliefs in common. Atheist means nothing, except no belief in god(s). Atheism is not a religion.

I think it's like being an atheist but you also mutter smugly about nonatheists and post pictures about how awesome science is while not bothering to actually understand science under the mistaken assumption that science = atheism. It also means being angry that Reddit took r/atheism off the default list because it got so weird and offensive.

It means thinking The Oatmeal is really great.

Also feminist has only become a bad word among stupid people.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
It means this, and it also means thinking that being religious inherently means that someone is stupid, and that stupidity or cowardice are the only reasons why someone would be religious, and it means refusing to learn anything at all about religion, and it means constantly making belligerent, passive-aggressive comments anytime the topic of religion is even tangentially mentioned, and actively insulting anyone who is religious.

It's really annoying even as an atheist.

Humanism meets a fairly strong 'we should not accept the privileged postion religion holds in society' with a view towards encouraging people to discard it, by criticising it's basis from a simple (that's not to say wrong) philosophical perspective.

My guess would be the new evangelical atheists. The ones that need you to believe the same as they do, or else you're an idiot or whatever else.

No idea what this is but I am going to call myself an atheist because that's what I am.
If people assume my beliefs are about whatever trendy pop-philosophy is topping the non-fiction best sellers list, they're the problem, not me? It probably helps that I live somewhere where atheism is very common.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
You know what I find funny... religions are rampant around the world. Most people on this planet are either part of a religion, or at least believe in a lot of the things they say. Atheists are the minority. Looking at the US, for instance, atheists are basically forced to stay silent about it if they want to ever enter politics. Depending where they live, they have to keep quiet about it if they want to be treated well at all. Religion is everywhere, even on their money, and they're told to just accept it and shut up. Religion is considered that one thing you're not allowed to think critically about, and even among reasonable people, it's almost taboo to point out the issues in different religions.

And then an annoyed atheist speaks up about it and they're equated with the worst of the worst. Go figure.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Literally everyone involved in this conversation is completely aware that they're talking about people being annoying on the Internet and not about serious oppression.

Literally everyone.

That doesn't make those people un-annoying. That's the conversation we're having: "We find these people annoying and we wish they'd stop." No one is saying that atheism is wrong (many of the people involved in these conversations are atheists - pretty much always). No one is saying it's legitimately unjust. The conversation is not "Death to atheists". The conversation is "stop being douchebags about stuff on the Internet."

my favorite is the really butthurt religious people who think their religious rights are being ~attacked~ and atheists are dangerous bullies.

I mean, I have nothing against religion at all, except when it hurts people or the earth. But I resent the intolerant demanding tolerance, I really do, and non-religious people being the bad guys when they refuse to recognize any validity in Creationism or something. Religion does deserve criticism. There's obviously a time and a place for it, and no one deserves to have their culture and dearest beliefs torn apart in front of them suddenly and unprovoked. No one should be a dick, religious or not. But religion and oppressive religious culture do deserve outspoken critics.

Are you going to post this on r/atheism to show those guys you really mean business?

It's so hard, being an atheist. It's hard and nobody understands (except a big portion of the west that's rapidly increasing)

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
When you tell someone that their beliefs are both factually wrong and actively making the world worse, whether you're right or wrong is irrelevant to whether they get angry. You need to be prepared for that reaction (or, in some cases, glory in it--"I've hit them where it hurts!")

I don't feel like I've ever lived in an environment where my moral philosophy wasn't considered acceptable. Personally, I think whether that moral philosophy comes from your own observations or the dictates of the Great God Pan is essentially window dressing. What matters is whether you're willing to change and adapt as you learn more about the world ("I guess I've been misinterpreting Pan's teachings") or whether you'd rather hold to ideas you know do more harm than good ("Stop it, you heathens! Pan would never approve of this!"

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Looking at the US, for instance, atheists are basically forced to stay silent about it if they want to ever enter politics. Depending where they live, they have to keep quiet about it if they want to be treated well at all.

I think this really, really depends on your subculture.

I live in the US, in a very blue state, and work in a field that is extremely liberal (soft-science academia). It is absolutely not a negative to be an athiest in my field (and I am one so I should know). However I *have* seen various forms of prejudice and hostility directed toward religious people, in particular Christians. I still remember, several years ago when I was in grad school, a Christian student in my cohort who was made to feel so uncomfortable about her beliefs that she ended up transferring out of our department (can we say "hostile environment," anyone?)

Obviously if I were living in a more conservative area, my experience would be a lot different. But the idea that religious people never face penalties for their beliefs no matter what wherever they go simply isn't true.

But is the game fun

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's a puzzle game, and a hard one, so whether it's fun depends on how much you're willing to tolerate feeling like an idiot when you're stuck on some seemingly impossible task. Still, I wouldn't say the puzzles are ever unfair, and I never needed to use a walkthrough. (A hint: you can get out of a lot of situations by intentionally getting your clones killed over and over.)

Also, the endings are both depressing as hell, but that's another secret.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Kinda related, but a friend found out I was an atheist recently and dropped all contact with me. Deleted from facebook, the works. I was utterly baffled and had to find out from another friend why they suddenly went all no-contact on me.

I'm quite :( about it since I thought they knew, but...I'm not going to try to revive a friendship if the simple fact of realising I don't believe = complete drop of friendship.

Even if I miss them a bit

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Your ex-friend is a shithead. I'm sorry that happened to you, but you're better off without them.

Now let's sit back and read another fifty comments about what ~assholes~ atheists are. *eyeroll*

That's horrible. To just leave without even saying why . . . It might almost be worth confronting them. What they say will undoubtedly hurt, but it may give a little closure. (Or just get any subconscious blame off your shoulders by putting the blame squarely on them.)

If only those uppity atheists would only watch their tone around religious people, they might allow them to hold elected office or not think of them as the least trustworthy group of people alive (despite the fact that they commit the fewest crimes, have the lowest divorce rate, etc.)
