Have you ever liked the Romantic False Lead more than the victorious romantic partner

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
You know how some shows put in a temporary character to serve as a romantic interest for one main character, solely for the purpose of introducing tension between that main character and another main character who s/he will obviously eventually choose instead?

e.g., Frasier for Sam/Diane in Cheers, Julie for Ross/Rachel in Friends, Shekar for Odo/Kira in Star Trek Deep Space Nine, Lavender for Ron/Hermione in Harry Potter...etc.

Did you ever like the relationship with the temporary character more than the endgame couple?

I can't think of any specific examples but yes.

Well, I really disliked Odo/Kira, so to answer your question: Yes. (Although I have to admit, I liked Vedek Bariel and Kira together best.)

Everyone hates Bariel, but I liked him too.

I'm sure I have, but I sure there's some.

And this is coming from someone who usually ships canon.

does Johanna Mason count as a romantic false lead for Katniss?

If she does I'd like to count Cinna as well.

I'm fine with Katniss ending up with Peeta but I still love Katniss/Johanna so much.

This Means War. :< Why the hell would she choose Chris Pine over Tom Hardy? In what world was he the better candidate?

Valerie from Danny Phantom. Their relationship was just more well done than Danny/Sam. It felt more interesting, more stakes, and more chemistry.

THEY FIT BETTER.

Hmmm... *ponders That 70s Show* I guess Kelso/Jackie wasn't exactly a "false lead" because it was canon for a couple seasons, but I was actually really disappointed that they didn't get back together after Hyde/Jackie being just a silly fling that didn't work out. Not exactly pleased that Hyde/Jackie lasted, because Kelso and Jackie totally deserved each other. XD

This is the 2nd male lead in Kdramas, and yes, I always get second lead syndrome. Usually because the character development happens mostly with the male lead, who starts out as a jerk and then becomes better, whereas the 2nd lead starts out as a nice guy...so even though I know the lead is endgame I can't help but root for the 2nd lead. A sad business.

Not the false lead, really - but I do find myself shipping one-off characters who show up for one episode, vibe with a character, and then disappear a surprising amount.

Often! My most recent one was Adam for Kurt from Glee; Blaine bores me to death. But Glee sucks now anyway, so I can't say I'm overly invested.

I don't suppose the Doctor for Seven of Nine/Chakotay counts, because they seemed to be actually serious about Doctor/Seven for a while there. But I want to bitch about it anyway.

Does Oz for Willow/Tara count? Because as much as I adored Willow/Tara, I loved Willow/Oz just a tiny smidge more.

Julie/Ross was sweet, much better than how R/R turned out IMO. They made each other happy and looked cute together. Who knows though, maybe if they'd lasted longer they would've fallen apart. Out of all his girlfriends, I think she and Charlie were the best matches for Ross.

I used to really like Ross/Emily too because he had FUN with her and I think Ross needed that in a relationship (he had fun with Rachel at first but the writers made them way too serious), but the second he said Rachel's name it was all ruined. I'll forever hate how Emily was assassinated and demonized to make Ross look like the victim again and that R/R was so great in comparison. They might not have worked out anyway, because they got married too soon, but that should have been the problem, not omg he still luved Rachel.

Yes. Un Monstre a Paris. Of course, Francouer was never going to become an actual romantic interest being a giant flea and all, but that sudden Raoul/Lucille ending was tacked on so shoddily.

I really disliked Ross/Rachel, so I was pretty much for any relationship that was one of them with someone else. Generally, however, I either ship canon, or I ship something far from canon that won't even ever be considered a romantic false lead.

Oh, wait! No one will know this one, but I liked Nikita/Jurgen from La Femme Nikita. Even if I knew it was destined to fail because of the "true love" of Michael and Nikita. And I liked Sydney better with anyone but Vaughn in Alias, but I don't remember if any of them were credible romantic false leads or not. Will, maybe? I liked Sydney/Will.

Uh....Kouga/Kagome. >_> I know Kouga and Inuyasha were both dicks, but I liked the Duo Look and Sound alike better...

Usually, no. But that's because I tend to ship crack pairs anyway, so I don't even go for canon most of the time anyway.

I disliked Ross. I would've preferred Rachel with Joey, even though they were really...odd, about how that one played out. Not sure if that one counts as a false lead or what.

Henry Crawford for Fanny Price instead of Edmund Bertram, in Mansfield Park.

Edmund is patronising to Fanny, in both the sense of "talks down to her and treats her like someone in need of moral guidance", and the sense of "acts like he's her father". He doesn't respect any of her decisions - he simply expects her to bow to his moral guidance in all things, and just sort of stands around looking disapproving whenever she tries anything new. He's also intensely boring, and doesn't actually appear to be attracted to her at all except as some kind of moral improvement project. Oh, yeah, and he's her cousin.

On the other hand, Henry Crawford is charming and witty. Sure, that doesn't make him a better partner in and of itself, but it shows that he actually goes to some kind of effort to get Fanny to like him. He actually likes her, too. He does stuff. With her! He and his sister Mary hang out with Fanny and go riding and play music and things together. The only thing to be said against him at this point, really, is that he's not very good at showing proper familiar respect and fulfilling familiar obligations, and he doesn't plan to enter any kind of profession (unlike Edmund, who is training for the clergy).

Fanny chooses Edmund, of course, because Mansfield Park is a morality tale, and that's how it goes. Then, near the end of the book, Henry runs off with Edmund's sister (who is married at this point), creating a huge scandal, and conveniently justifying Fanny's decision to marry Edmund instead of Henry. It's mostly the result of values dissonance, but to a modern reader like myself, Henry seems to have suffered a Jacob Black level derailing in order to bring Fanny and Edmund together.
