Two of those characters look way too damn young.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'U.S. patriotism.' Can you please elaborate?

US patriotism is just being from the US and mentioning that fact, likely.

You're probably right, but I wanted to give the OP the benefit of the doubt.

Personally, I just wave my flag, eat my hotdog, and roll my eyes at anyone who says anything bad about my country.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
well, I mean, there are some bad things that can be said about the country with justice. Although it's hard not to get kind of defensive about even those things, when it's said by someone from another country.

There are lots of things that can be said about us. We're shallow, thick, apt to overreact, hypocritical, and our politicians are usually terrible. But if you say all that, then you also have to say that we're generous, forgiving, tough as nails, and our politicians are usually terribly funny.

Trouble is, most people say the first set without mentioning the second. Or they act like we're the worst plague to hit the earth since Moses and the Pharaoh squared off. Either way, I feel justified in ignoring a good chunk of the criticism leveled at my country.

We have a military empire and are considerably behind other western countries in terms of human rights. I'd say at least a good chunk of the criticism the US gets is justified.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-02 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
And we treat a nice big chunk of our citizens and pretty much everyone living here who's not a citizen like crap most of the time, while talking big talk about being 'the land of the free," while not mentioning that it's really 'free to starve and die of easily preventable diseases because taxes are of the devil."

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-12-02 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
And ironically it's not like we're free of taxes...we just spend them really, really badly.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but when I hear people talking negatively about "US patriotism" I tend to think of the OTT type, like that country singer singing about America kicking "a boot in your ass" and the "freedom fries" people. There's a certain type of very loud very obnoxious American patriotism.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
That dude with the guns and the flags and "fuck yeah america *loud noises*" is what I imagine to be US Patriosm

As opposed to someone who is patriotic.

It's how much they make it part of their public identity I guess

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Yes yes exactly! And the distinction between "US Patriotism" vs "someone who is patriotic" is what I'm talking about.

I'm wondering how many people actually follow that brand of patriotism. After 9/11 patriotism was a fad, but now that seems to have gone away. My hometown was largely military and very, very conservative, and I almost never heard that sort of nonsense outside of jokes. Most of us put the flag out on July 4, roasted some hotdogs and burgers, and watched the fireworks on tv.

I strongly suspect that's how it goes in most places. Which means the 'freedom fries' crowd isn't a good example of American patriotism.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's the loud example, and the one that gets angry if you act differently, so it's the one that gets all the attention. Like with any group, really.

[personal profile] iceyred 2013-12-01 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Too true. But another American really should know better than to believe that is the true face of patriotism.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
My cringe is less about it being the "true face" and more "Ugh, these are the people representing me to the rest of the planet. Please make them go away."

(Anonymous) 2013-12-02 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
People in generally should really know better. Especially since, whatever group somebody is in, they're most likely going to be some extremist that make them look bad.

When pointed out, they'll say, "No, no! That's not really what we're like! It's just the loud, obnoxious ones."

But they'll gladly point out the loud, obnoxious ones of a group they don't like and say, "See, see how all those people act there?"

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
My dad's side of the family is like this. And all of their friends and extended family are like it too. They were like this before 9/11 but after it just exploded and is the gift that keeps on giving. It is really really obnoxious and I am happy that you have escaped experiencing it.

The town I grew up in had a large vocal crowd that was the OTT sort of aggressive patriotism too. Same for the town I went to college in. Maybe I'm just unlucky and those types flock to me, and you've been lucky to avoid it.

Do these people really exist though. Really.

Sorry I meant the "Freedom Fries" people.

Like hey world. That never caught on. That was never a thing.

It didn't. HAPPEN.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-12-02 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
But, uh, it sorta did? It wasn't a big thing or anything but there were some loudmouth people who insisted on calling them freedom fries for a whole hot sixty seconds where I live. But overall it wasn't like a representative deal or anything.

IDK it was a thing in some pockets but it didn't catch on so I'm not sure if I'm agreeing or disagreeing...

That was such a small group of people though, do they even deserve acknowledgement? Think the people who bring it up for ironic purposes are perpetuating it far more than the handful of sincere people did. When we look back people are totally gonna think it was A Thing even though it baaaarely was. Because why would you make fun of something that NEVER HAPPENED RIGHT.*

For the record, where I am it was not a thing that existed at all.

*I am of course joking, people do this all the time
