If it's any consolation, I'm pretty sure that's considered disrespectful to the flag.

(It baffles me that a nation so predominantly Christian has a detailed set of rules for what constitutes "respect" and "disrespect" for what amounts to an idol, but that's another flame war.)

i have a good feeling about this thread, i'm sure it won't be ridiculous at all.

but i feel that I should make the point that patriotism is not in itself a bad thing, and saying that one hates patriotism is, to me, kind of imprecise language that includes both good things that are fine, as well as bad things that are objectionable. it's difficult to talk about this sort of thing because, you know, there are such obviously awful aspects of hypernationalism, and defending patriotism in general runs the risk of coming across as defending those things.

but at the end of the day, I really don't think there's anything wrong with anyone in America being a patriot, any more than there's anything wrong with any citizen of any country being a patriot. obviously people in all countries go too far with it sometimes and that should be condemned, but IMO that's no reason to dismiss patriotism.

But I think the OP didn't say they don't hate patriotism in istelf, but "US's patriotism" which is a special brand of over the top "Americaaaa fuck yeah!" type of patriotism.

I agree. There's nothing wrong with patriotic about your country. It's when you start thinking that everyone else should be just like your country that becomes the problem.

I think most the world side eyes American patriotism because they have their own history where their country's patriotism turned into invading and trying to colonize the world. So, they see Americans and are they are waiting for the same thing to happen there.

They don't get how it would be different for Americans. Americans have a love affair with their own country. It's more of a family love than a sterile, stoic devotion to their government. In fact, you ask most Americans, they aren't too pleased with their government but they love their country and the people in it. Much like a family where you may not always like your relatives because they drive you crazy but you love them.

Not OP, but when I hear people talking negatively about "US patriotism" I tend to think of the OTT type, like that country singer singing about America kicking "a boot in your ass" and the "freedom fries" people. There's a certain type of very loud very obnoxious American patriotism.
