Agreed, with one caveat: I don't like how you can only get notified when a story is updated if you fave it. I prefer to fave stories that are actually my favorites.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean you can't just 'subscribe' to a WiP, you have to actually favorite it? I wouldn't like that at all.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
it's been a while, but I thought that adding them to your "read later" list sufficed?

i'd have to agree with this, the interface it has is much better than AO3.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem is it's only potentially "better than FFN and AO3" if you like ponies.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

I have no interest in that fandom. I'm looking at the website's interface out of curiosity, but it would be useless to me one way or another.

But the OP is talking about the general interface, comment and tagging system, not the content.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Which isn't better at all. I just looked. It is a simple Wordpress layout with no option for searching by pairing. I can't even imagine how they would make that a multi-fandom place. It wouldn't work. It has a search bar like every other site and very few browsing options. I didn't see tags listed anywhere.

Anything would be better than AO3. It doesn't let you exclude nearly enough from searches, or narrow searches down so you aren't swamped by pointless slash and crossovers.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate how there's no filter for primary/secondary character tags. If I'm clicking a character's tag I don't want stories where they only appear for 2 sentences.

I've read a couple of ao3 fics where the ficcer has listed characters that weren't even in the fucking thing, they were just mentioned. That speaks volumes about the site's authorbase, that is the real flaw at the heart of ao3.

Excluding isn't even an option an the website they are talking about.

Secret 5 - FimFiction.net, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, fanfiction archives

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a screencapture of the "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic" fanfiction archive "FimFiction.net". It shows a banner with a white and purple unicorn on top, and below a story called "The Beginning of Something Bigger" with a purple unicorn (Twilight Sparkle) and a blue and rainbow-colored pegasus "Rainbow Dash" smiling at each other next to the summary.]

Best fanfiction website. Period. The tag system is incredible, the way the site is set up is really good, the comments section has helpful critique...

This is the model more fanfic sites should base their systems off of. Maybe it's the best because it's only one fandom?

Secret because: I think it's better than FanFiction.Net and Archive Of Our Own which is heresy apparently.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, it's probably because it's just the one fandom, it's easier to fine tune things that way

but yeah, they keep improving things with each update instead of breaking them, which is pretty cool

in a less positive note, did the site get slower for anyone in the last few months?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't doubt it, after all it's easier with only one fandom.

For extra heresy: After the recent changes, FF search function is better (and it would be even better if more authors noticed the changes and edited their stories/used the new options in their new stories) than AO3's.

I'll drink to that. The old Pit of Voles has really upped its game in the last year or so. It just needs to ban second person and present tense fics and it'd be pretty much perfect. You can filter out unwanted characters, set genres, look for or exclude pairings. It's struck a good balance between letting writers put in main characters to search by, but prevent them spamming every character who is even mentioned let alone gets a line, and it has pre-set warnings and tags so you don't get tag spam or warnings-wars. It has a nice simple tabled interface too.

AO3 looks like a geocities site next to the Pit's new look. heck, even Twisting the Hellmouth has left ao3 for dust these days.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I just went to check out FF.net since I haven't been there in ages, and I was rather disappointed. From your words I was expecting such great new things! But it's pretty awful still. I find ao3's look much easier to scan through. But man, FF.net's search funtions are definitely leagues better.

This is the first that I have heard that there are changes (it's been a long time since I actually finished a story), and I will happily update my stories to make them more searchable. I'm seeing the options to add more than two characters and indicate pairings; is there anything else?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
I hate that I can't search FF by pairing anymore. I haven't gone back to read there since they made the change to add more characters. It took long enough to wade through the bad stories now I have to wade through many other popular pairings to find my pairing and then see if it is a good story. Way too much work.

But I've been on LJ since then and am way behind on reading all the fests, so it isn't like I'm having trouble finding stories to read now.

What's the site?

[personal profile] comradesmiler 2013-12-08 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
FIMFiction, an MLP:FIM fanfiction archive

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
There are still things I don't like about it, but I agree that there are some pretty neat things about it. My ideal site would probably be some sort of fusion between that and AO3.

I don't remember being a huge fan of the search function, though. To be fair, though, it's been well over a year since I last went on it (lost interest in the fandom), so I suppose it could have changed since then.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
i don't even want to know what kind of fanfic ppl write about cartoon ponies.

There may be a good deal of crap fic on that site (i read a fic every now and then, bu mainly from one author...who seriously needs to write more of his Ditzy Do fics, now that Big Mac is in the picture...), but I will very much agree. It's organization is fucking amazing. O_o
