I tried to like this show, I really did. I kept hearing people call it the new X-Files and whatnot before it aired. I just couldn't keep interested passed the first few episodes. It's so...bland to me. I think if Abbie had been white, the show would have already been canceled. The only good things about that show is the diversity, and it's sad that the fandom is so shitty about it.

To you, maybe. The show is popular because a lot of people do think it's good for more than the diversity of the cast.

The writing has been awful in places, especially anything to do with Katarina's backstory. So she's this, no wait, she's this, oh, but then that didn't happen, this happened!

True about the writing, but it's not so bad or inconsistent that the only thing keeping people around is that Abbie isn't white.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
...Except the ratings for the show have been continuingly dropping for a long time now. It's losing a lot of viewers, and if it continues on that path Fox will cancel it.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately if it does get canceled people will be crying foul because racism! When it's really just a badly written campy show.

That's the bad thing about espousing the diversity of SH all over the place. It's great that it has a diverse cast (even if a white man is still the lead). It's a shame that this sort of milestone is dragged down by an inferior product.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
badly written campy show is no reason for it to be unpopular

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Just look at Supernatural.

Since I don't pay attention to ratings, I assumed it was staying popular *shrugs* Fox does have a record of canceling not only good shows but different/interesting ones too.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, ratings are posted after every episode airs on tumblr. It has not been looking good. Also, a lot of the fans blasted the writers on twitter for writing episodes that focused on Ichabod and Katarina instead of Abbie. So...who knows what's going to happen with that show, lol.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Well, considering it's already picked up for a second season, that seems unlikely. Also, the ratings don't suck at all (http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2013/12/10/monday-final-tv-ratings-the-voice-the-great-christmas-light-fight-adjusted-down/221441/). Sleepy Hollow is in the top 20 for the 18-49 demo (http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2013/12/04/fox-ranks-fourth-for-the-week-among-adults-18-49/220117/) - it's the ONLY show they have in the top 20 for that demo. So why would they cancel?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
They renewed it after they aired 3 episodes, which is just stupid. It also puts the renewal in danger because the network doesn't know at that point how the show is going to perform.

The ratings ARE dropping and the renewal may get canceled if the ratings don't pick up. They'll go ahead with the second season if ratings plateau where they are right now, but if they continue to drop they will have to cancel it. Advertisers don't pay to have less people see their commercials each week and the network will be forced to choose between the advertisers, who pay them money, or the show, which costs them money. It's not hard to guess which they'll pick.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
It has only three episodes left to air this season - how much further do you think it's going to fall? (And two of those episodes are the two-hour season finale on Jan. 20.) It may get cancelled after next season, depending on how it does when it returns next fall. But claiming it's going to get cancelled this season is ridiculous. And it's STILL Fox's highest drama, as I pointed out below.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
One more episode below 7m and yes, they probably will cancel the renewal. That means they'll still air the two part finale and then cancel the show after the season. It's the main advantage to renewing a show early in its run (the other being that cancelling a renewal is not the same as cancelling a show and the network looks better on paper). This is especially important if it's the network's strongest show in that genre. But being the strongest on that network and being strong are not the same thing. Advertisers will pull out if the network sticks with a show that has average-to-poor reviews and few viewers, as Sleepy Hollow currently does. It's better for Fox to back a new production in its place.

FWIW, I don't hate the show, I just know how advertising works with broadcast networks and Sleepy Hollow's ratings since the renewal aren't strong enough to meet the contract requirements for advertisers in the wake of the renewal. If Fox offers the advertisers new contracts with the same slots for half as much as they contracted in October, then Sleepy Hollow will probably get a second season.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
lol, they're not going to cancel it, even if there's another episode in the 6.5 million viewer range. the ratings are not nearly bad enough to merit cancellation esp in the context of the contemporary television landscape. it's a show with a decent amount of hype and visibility, and it's got numbers that are somewhat solid. it doesn't make sense from a marketing and programming perspective to cancel a show like that, even if it made sense from a financial perspective.

also, i think you're strongly overstating how bad the numbers actually are - 6.5 million viewers is really not that bad in this day and age.

Sleepy Hollow viewer numbers (in millions):

Episode 1: 10.10
Episode 2: 8.59
Episode 3: 7.97
Episode 4: 7.96
Episode 5: 7.59
Episode 6: 7.08
Episode 7: 7.03
Episode 8: 7.09
Episode 9: 6.56
Episode 10: 6.65

Seems more to me like it's fluctuating. Yes, they have lost viewers, but they do have a pretty decent fanbase.

Now, if Orlando Jones would only SHUT UP...

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
Those ratings go up a lot when you look at the +7s.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
What's Orlando Jones said?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That isn't "fluctuating". That's dropping like a stone - at a stead rate.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
The ratings may be falling, but so are the ratings for a lot of FOX shows. (Have you looked at Glee's ratings lately?) Despite the falling ratings, it's still FOX's highest rated drama. And it's already been renewed for Season two. It's only running 13 episodes a season, so after its finale in January it won't be back until next fall.

FOX doesn't actually have a lot going for it right now in the drama department. It's got Sleepy Hollow, Almost Human which is struggling, Bones which has been sent to Fridays, and Glee, which is getting terrible ratings these days. And The Following, which will take over Sleepy Hollow's slot after the season finale. And its (non-animated) comedies aren't doing great either. So before you start condemning Sleepy Hollow's ratings, check how it's doing compared to the rest of the network.

*I don't actually even watch the show, but I do follow ratings, and it's hardly in danger of being cancelled.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
For The Following, is it the same as what already aired on F/X a year ago or is it a new season?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
It's a new season.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Who the fuck called it the new X-Files

I mean, I have no strong feelings about Sleepy Hollow one way or the other, but that's just ridiculous

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of the pre-Fall season articles about it called it the new X-Files. I was disappointed to say the least.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's more Supernatural than X Files.
