Re: So, should Santa be black?

Santa is a fictional character. He should be whatever color people want. Toys and shit should just come in any color. Casting movies should be random.

I don't really understand when people say it's too extreme or wrong or get upset at the idea of various Santas. Does it negate the holiday spirit somehow? Does making Santa asian or black or handicapped or gay somehow take away from who Santa is?

Does Santa being white take away from who Santa is? If it doesn't matter what he looks like, then why does he have to be changed?

I think that's one of those arguments that only works one way. One side is inclusive, the other is exclusive.

The article wasn't exactly inclusive either, since it was about making Santa strictly black from now on. That's pretty much the same thing.

I think we read different articles.

It does not have to be changed, it's not a matter of necessity. It would simply be nice to see other takes on his character.

And no, casting movies should not be random. Casting should make sense. That is why different Santas could contribute to the image of the character - because their differences are what gives artists more opportunities to play with the idea.

DA but I think what they meant was that casting calls should be open to everyone.

In general, yes. But if the producers specifically want their character to be white, why would they call for non-white actors?

DA

I don't think producers should limit race when casting something like Santa. They should be open to everyone. I can't really think of a good reason why Santa in a movie should only be cast white.

wwwwellll maybe because the producers want the aesthetics to stay the same? If they go for the traditional, look-im-santa!11 image of Santa, why ever would limiting their casting call to white people be an issue?

I agree. I don't care much about Santa anymore, but having different Santa's wouldn't hurt anything, and it might mean something positive to people so I'm for it.

Does making Santa asian or black or handicapped or gay somehow take away from who Santa is?

Disregarding the fact that a handicapped santa seems pretty infeasible in the mythos of the character (How many sleds are wheelchair accessible? How many chimneys have ramps? Can you imagine the kerfuffle of moving a wheelchair along a sloped snowy roof?) I think there could be an argument that it kinda would take a bit away from santa, from the point of view of the children, if there is two obviously different people pretending to be santa.

You do know that the vast majority of disabled people aren't wheelchair users, right? And that not all wheelchair users are completely 100% unable to walk?

I honestly don't give two shakes one way or the other, but I think you're really overestimating the infeasibility here.
