So, should Santa be black?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
This has been a hot topic for a few days now, I was wondering what other people's thoughts on it are.

I'm...torn. If it's a Santa in a story universe where Santa isn't immortal, and gets handed down to other people (This has been used in a lot of movies) then there's no reason why there shouldn't be a non-white Santa. The fictional character itself, not the real life St.Nick, is white, though. So, I don't see how it'd be possible to make a version that would suit every single different type of person? Should there be an Asian Santa, too? Or a homosexual one? An Irish one? A disabled one? It seems a bit extreme to me.

Um, gay Santa is canon tho.

That's a cute picture and all, but I don't like the comparison between a non-white santa and an animal santa. That's pretty fucked up, and might be something you need to examine about yourself.

I think a non-white Santa would be fun. It depends on the context. An Asian Santa is stupid - it's not like Santa is a big part of any of the Asian cultures, he simply wouldn't work as a character. A homosexual one? How on earth would one determine that? Is he going to wear pink pants? It would be fetishization. A disabled one? Why not? Irish? Could be great?

Like, I see Santa as a character who can be any kind of person from those cultures that have Santa!Christmas (because not all the cultures where Christmas is celebrated have him).

But overall, I find the sentiment silly. What the hell, people. Why would it even matter.

Santa is a fictional character. He should be whatever color people want. Toys and shit should just come in any color. Casting movies should be random.

I don't really understand when people say it's too extreme or wrong or get upset at the idea of various Santas. Does it negate the holiday spirit somehow? Does making Santa asian or black or handicapped or gay somehow take away from who Santa is?

Santa is all shapes, sizes, creeds, and colors all at the same time. There's only one Santa who is simultaneously Asian, and black, and white, and gay, and disabled, and Irish. That's my Santa theory. Of course in my heart of hearts I believe he's actually Irish, but still.

(Also, in passing, not really relevant b/c no one's actually criticized her but I just wanted to say that I really like and respect Megyn Kelly, she's one of the few people connected with Fox who I do respect, Shep Smith being the other one who comes to mind, and even if I disagree with her she seems intelligent and reasonable. And I think the comment she was making was pretty clearly a joke about Santa being real, and nothing more).

Depends?

Are we talking historical St. Nicholas "Santa"? Because he should look like he's from Turkey, so maybe not black, but definitely Middle Eastern/not European.

As for other variations, I don't see why not? Especially when it's something like the Santa Clause movie where whoever kills Santa has to take his place.

Okay I missed this controversy, but is "should" really a word that applies here? I have to listen to a christmas song at work about a sexy surfboarding santa who says the singer looks "naughty". I thought it was already widely accepted that people do whatever they want and throw santa into all cultural contexts. I'm curious why people are arguing about it?

I've been laughing at all the uproar that article has caused. I think it's hilarious how upset a lot of white folks are getting over the mere suggestion that Santa be anything but white. I mean have these people honestly never seen depictions of a non-white Santa before? Plus, Santa is magic, why would anyone think he was bound to one color/form?

Re: So, should Santa be black?

Blah blah blah I don't care about this argument, but lemme tell you I kind of love the idea of the mascot of the holiday being an animal. So many reasons why I love that idea. Sadly, people are really hooked on this Santa thing and that will not be changing any time soon.

The thing I don't understand is: why are people so very upset at the idea of Santa Claus being anything but white?

I think people who get so angry at the mere idea of Santa being non-white need to take a moment and honestly think about why that idea bothers them so much.

I think people should depict Santa any way they want, of any race they want, and get off other people's cases about how they're depicting them.

I have a big problem with penguin-Santa, though, because ANTARCTIC DOES NOT EQUAL ARCTIC, FOR FUCK'S SAKE! So unless you want to have Santa move to the South Pole because of global warming, penguins are not called for.

Why am I in a snit about arctic-antarctic distinctions around the magical flying reindeer and elves and whatever? Because I can.

DRIVING BY TO SAY THAT IN (at least several) LATIN-AMERICAN COUNTRIES, Santa/Viejito Pascuero used to be portrayed according to our hemisphere and culture.

Like Chilean!Viejito:

This was before globalization became a thing in the mid-70's |DDD

That said, dudes and dudettes, if it's Saint Nicholas who we're talking about... He was from what now is Turkey, and his skin could have ranged from mid-olive to black. So I can't see why THE SANTITY OF CHRISTMAS IS RUINED if more Black Santa started to be drawn and marketed.

Santa Claus is so far away from the actual saint that at this point, Santa could be anyone. So, Yes, Virginia, Santa Claus could be black.

I loved a magazine ad i saw years ago that had five Santas, one White, one Black, one Latino, one Asian and one Native American.

Isn't our modern concept of Santa pretty much an invention of Coca-Cola? And even the imagery of the Victorian era is clearly very far removed from the historical St. Nicholas, who, as I just learned from The Daily Show/The Colbert Report, was from what is now Turkey and would not have been the vaguely Scandinavian figure a lot of people picture. No one really gives a shit about the historical St. Nicholas - not even the folks on Fox News - so when it comes to the guy in the costume down at the mall, I honestly can't grasp why anyone would freak out over a non-white Santa.

You do realize that there is already and Asian and an Irish and a Black Santa, right? It's not the mainstream in America but they exist around the world wherever the Santa thing is popular.

The only problem I'd think you'd have if they had black!Santa and such is kids getting confused and people want an answer that won't say Santa isn't real.

Then perhaps the answer can be that Santa is more a magical entity than person that changes his appearance.

I think it'd be fine to have black Santa but shitty parents would definitely complain about that possible scenario saying, "How am I supposed to explain to them?!! They think he's real!"

Why not. Christians routinely raceswap their central religious figure whom they claim to believe was a real man who walked the Earth.

He's a magical being who lives in a (hidden or invisible) toy factory staffed by elves at the North Pole, sees what every child is doing all year long, drives a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer and traverses the world in a single night. I see no reason why he couldn't also appear to whoever sees him in whatever form they want or expect.
