Re: So, should Santa be black?

I think a non-white Santa would be fun. It depends on the context. An Asian Santa is stupid - it's not like Santa is a big part of any of the Asian cultures, he simply wouldn't work as a character. A homosexual one? How on earth would one determine that? Is he going to wear pink pants? It would be fetishization. A disabled one? Why not? Irish? Could be great?

Like, I see Santa as a character who can be any kind of person from those cultures that have Santa!Christmas (because not all the cultures where Christmas is celebrated have him).

But overall, I find the sentiment silly. What the hell, people. Why would it even matter.

I guess I was trying to say that the US has a ton of different cultures/ethnicities, and I don't know how a singular character would be able to suit everyone's needs. (I don't see why Santa is supposed to be relatable? He's an oldman who brings presents to children. Why does it matter what he looks like aside from fat, has a beard, wears red)

IA.

But I was not thinking about anyone doing something mandatory on a bigger scale to "suit everyone's needs". Just, if somebody dresses up as Santa, it doesn't matter who they are - black, Irish, or homosexual. Or, if somebody draws Santa/uses him in ads/movies, it could be fun to have some diversity (but not in a SJW we-need-more-Native-American-representation way, just... for the sake of creativity, seeing as he is a universal symbol).

eta: actually, I think Terry Pratchett already outdid everyone with his representation!Santa. Everyone else can go home. His Santa is the Death, ffs.

I have nothing against those things, I just don't agree with the article about how Santa must be non-white now to be relatable.

Well, IA, then.

Some Asian countries have integrated Santa into their Chrismas celebrations. I don't see why an Asian Santa would be stupid considering there are plenty of Asian Christians.

But not all Christians have Santa in their Christmas celebrations. In Christian cultures, Christmas is mostly about, yanno, the birth of Christ.

That being said, you are right, it was a bit of a generalization on my part. Asian!Santa would make sense in those Asian cultures where he is present.

Oh, yeah, I didn't mean to say that /all/ Christians celebrate with Santa.

But yeah, I was just bringing it up because my friend is Filipino, and she used to celebrate Christmas with Santa when she was younger. Apparently, a lot of people in the Philippines celebrate with Santa.

Re: So, should Santa be black?

why would it matter if he's white then

like honestly I'm surprised Megyn Kelly has never heard of a black Santa before, I've seen depictions of him as black and other races in cartoons and I remember a Cosby episode where the little girl (I think Raven but it could have been Ruby) said she saw three different Santas at three different stores and they were all different races and I think Lisa Bonet gave her a speech that Santa can be any and all races or something like that

and I'm sure predominantly black or Asian communities have a Christmas party where one guy dresses up as Santa

and there are plenty of black guys who work as mall Santa's I'm sure

it's just not a new idea at all

but also I think it does matter like I can see how Santa is kind of a father/grandpa figure that kids look up to? Not like they want to be old and fat and drive a sleigh (though they might) but that he spreads joy to everyone in the world and it's nice when your role model looks like you or... at least when it's a possibility and there aren't white people on the news telling you that there's no way he can look like you, ever.

Re: So, should Santa be black?

Well, the whole point of my comment is that it does not matter if he is white or not, which is why there could be non-white Santas?

Though you may have a point here:

but that he spreads joy to everyone in the world and it's nice when your role model looks like you or... at least when it's a possibility and there aren't white people on the news telling you that there's no way he can look like you, ever.

so it would be good if there were more diverse Santas in movies and other fictional/arty stuff. But it's not like anyone absolutely ought to do that, or that anyone's individual unwillingness to portray Santa as something other than a white man indicates the presence of racism. I think it only applies to the original characters - the unwillingness to introduce any non-white non-male characters may be an indicator of some kind of prejudice. But interpreting the already existings ones? Hell no.

idk I don't see why a non-racist person would ever be unwilling to portray him as anything other than white? neutral, sure, but to actually be against it/offended by the possibility sounds racist to me (and I'm not saying you are you seem neutral imo)

Re: So, should Santa be black?

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2013-12-14 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I meant like if they are an artist and they do not wish for their Santa to be non-white. It's not racism, they just don't want to change the aesthetics of the character. If they are actively against anyone else portraying him as dark-skinned/are offended by it, they have no idea how art and culture work and they can GTFO.

Christmas is a big deal in Japan and South Korea, and Santa's involved there. Why not an Asian santa? It's not like Santa's related to religion.

Fair enough. Someone already told me that (look upthread), and IA that it was untrue that an Asian Santa wouldn't work.

Re: So, should Santa be black?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Err, living in Japan, I wouldn't say Christmas is a "big deal." At least nowhere near the West. Stores get decorated, parents might give kids presents, but it's not a huge holiday. It's more seen as a romantic holiday to go out with your lover. But it's not a big deal.

SK, I would guess more, there's actually Christians there.

Re: So, should Santa be black?

[personal profile] writerserenyty 2013-12-14 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean yeah not as big as in the US, but it's enough to inspire Christmas music, presents, santa, christmas cake, etc. It's not a fringe thing, is what I mean; it's not like no one celebrates it there.

Haven't Japan and South Korea demonstrated that they really like white Santa?

I mean unless you're trying some paternalistic bullshit about foreign countries.

An Asian Santa is stupid - it's not like Santa is a big part of any of the Asian cultures, he simply wouldn't work as a character.

Except for Orthodox and Coptic Christians where St. Nicholas actually lived, which was in Asia.
