He may have been created for toys, but Olaf was a lot of fun. I think he added some good comic relief (some of his lines were so funny) and I really liked his song. So yeah, he may have been there to appeal to a younger crowd, but I think he added something to the movie.

Yeah...no shit. Contrary to what most of Tumblr believes, Disney movies are for children. So they add these childish, easily marketable side characters (this snowman, Meeko, horse/chameleon from Tangled, that dragon from Mulan, etc) for children.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious. The difference being that in this specific case the snowman was more jarring and out of place tonally with the rest of the film than your average Disney sidekick.

Noooo!

I liked Olaf!

The trolls tho...

They were annoying and "Fixer Upper" was a song that was approximately 10 times longer than it needed to be and it messed with the pacing. Because like the story is all "Oh no! Anna's heart has been frozen! She needs help! ... Let's pause for a 5 minute long slightly comedic song!"

this

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
It kinda was a moment of necessary levity before everything went to the OH CRAP part, and it did give Anna the understanding that Elsa was still good even after cursing her heart, and that set up the final act.

Up until that point Anna was really ambivalent and hurt, it was the trolls words that made her focus again in saving Elsa.

I wasn't a fan of the song, but as a breather for the tense third act and Anna's character development, it worked well.

Congratulations on being brave enough to confess to holding the majority opinion.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
What majority opinion? Whenever you bring up Olaf it's "WHAT DID YOU EXPECT ITS A DISNEY FILM MADE FOR KIDS".

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Olaf and the movie would only be half as sweet without him. Also I'm going to buy an Olaf plushie.

Secret 2 - Frozen (2013 animated film)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-15 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Anna, a young girl, Olaf, a magic snowman, Kristoff, a young man, and Sven, a reindeer, all characters from the CGI animated movie "Frozen". They're all looking at the talking snowman in a frozen forest.]

I think 'Frozen' would have been better without Olaf. He seemed out of place with the rest of the story and seemed like he was just there to sell toys.

Olaf did have a purpose. Those singing trolls? Not so much.

At this point, I don't think Disney would ever make a movie without some kind of cute/whimsical sidekick character. They're too profitable.

I actually liked Olaf a lot more than I thought I would. Plus he was voiced by the guy from The Book of Mormon, so that made me giggle. :3

I did not like the trolls, though. I mean, they were great at the beginning, and I do think they could have been utilized well, but they weren't.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-16 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
This was me, too. I went in prepared to hate his little snowman guts, and came out thinking he was one of my favorite characters in the entire film.

I think they were trying to allude that he was basically Elsa's connection to Anna but then his song was all about wanting summer and it didn't really add anything to the movie. I didn't hate him though. He was less annoying to me than Pascal and Maximus.

I also /like/ the trolls. Whoops.

Wait, you mean a children's movie contained a character that is aimed at children and will sell merch? FROM DISNEY?

When did Disney become a money hungry studio????

I can't get over how ugly this character is. I haven't seen the movie yet but just visually he's so damn jarring. I can't remember any other Disney sidekicks who looked so much like transplants from another story, movie, art style, or even medium than this thing.

I think it would have been better without all the kitschy songs. And a stronger plot.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-16 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I mean plot wise he fit? Style wise? He just...he didn't fit. At all. It was like he was from another movie art wise.
